ELIDH ALYSON AND MEGAN DO WELL IN THE 1st ROUND OF THE HELEN HOLM

By COLIN FARQUHARSON Colin@scottishgolfview.com

Six members of the GB and I Curtis Cup team in the leading 14 at the end of the first day in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Troon was good news for the LGU Selection Panel. Only Charley Hull (who withdrew earlier in the week) and Stephanie Meadow (a student at Alabama University) of the eight chosen to play against the Americans at Nairn Golf Club from June 8-10 are missing from a star-studded field.
Ireland's Leona Maguire, who seems to win any stroke-play event she plays in by a barrowload of strokes as befits a +5 handicap player ranked No 8 in the world, was the best of them but she had to share the pole position for the moment with Rachael Goodall (Heswall).
On a dry, windless day, the par-5s at Troon Portland were all reachable in two shots and Maguire and Goodall plundered them in returning seven-under-par 68s. The 17-year-old (her twin Lisa, the European individual champion, has a wrist injury) from the Slieve Russell club birdied six of the seven long holes in halves of 36-32. Goodall started with an eagle 3 and eached the turn in six-under 32, before coming home in 36.
They are two shots clear of Curtis Cup choice Amy Boulden (ranked No 15 in the world) from Wales and France's former British girls champion Perrine Delacour (ranked No 42 in the world).. Third in the list of Curtis Cup players is Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), joint fourth on 71. She was set to fill the third place overnight on 69 until she ran up a 7 at the par-5 18th.
The leading 66 players and ties at the end of Saturday's second round over Troon Portland will go forward to Sunday's final 18 holes over Royal Troon.
After one round, there are exactly 66 players on 79 or better.

EILIDH IS OFF TO THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Last year's Champion Eilidh Briggs was unable to defend her title this year as she was playing in the British Universities Championship.  She finished third and has been selected by the British Universities and Colleges Sport organisation as one of only three players to represent GREAT BRITAIN in the World Universities Golf Championships at Liberec in the Czech Republic from 2 - 7 July.

Well done to Eilidh who, along with Alyson and Megan will be playing in the Helen Holm next weekend.

Good luck to all our Renfrewshire players.

RLCGA CHAMPION ALYSON'S VOTE OF THANKS

ALYSON IS OUR NEW RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY CHAMPION

Alyson McKechin - the 2012 RLCGA Champion
In a fantastic final this afternoon Alyson McKechin became our new Renfrewshire Champion when she won 3/2 in this afternoon's final at Erskine. Megan Briggs was 2 up after 4 holes with Megan having a birdie at the 4th. Alyson then birdied the 5th and 8th to get it back to all square at the turn.
Both girls were out in 1under par - Alyson having 2 birdies and 1 bogey to Megan's 1 birdie.
The 10th was halved in par and the Alyson won the short 11th with a par and then Alyson birdied the 13th to go 2 up. Megan responded back with a birdie at the 14th. Alyson then birdied the 15th and 16th to clinch this brilliant match.
What a feast of great golf for all the spectators who came along to watch.

Final:
Alyson McKechin beat Megan Briggs 3/2

ITS MEGAN AND ALYSON IN THE FINAL

It's a Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) v Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) final in the Renfrewshire women's county championship at Erksine Golf Club.
That's the No 1 seed and four times county champion against the No 2 seed who has never reach the county final previously.
Megan bt the No 4 seed, Linsey Stevenson (Elie and Earlsferry) by 4 and 3 in this morning's first semi-final.
Alyson knocked out the 10 times former champion Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle), also by 5 and 3. Alyson had a few birdies in taking up a five-hole lead at the 12th.
Since 2005 either Megan Briggs or her younger sister Eilidh has won the Renfrewshire title (Megan four in a row from 2006, Eilidh two in a row from 2010). Eilidh was unable to play in this week's championship because it clashed with the British univerisites tournament at West Lancs GC.
SEMI-FINAL RESULTS
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) bt Linsey Stevenson (Elie and Earlsferry) 4 and 3.
Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) bt Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) 4 and 3.
FINAL
Briggs v McKechin.

WHO CAN WIN THIS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

CLICK HERE FOR ALL THE RESULTS AND DRAW FOR TOMORROW

The RLCGA Past Captains from Carol Fell on Vimeo.

In 2007 Megan Briggs won the County Championship at Erskine against Clare- Marie Carlton. Tomorrow she will try to repeat that win and become the County Champion for the 5th time. However, she has strong opposition with young up and coming star Linsey Stevenson to contend with in the morning's semi final. In the other semi final 10 times champion Donna Jackson (who last won in 2005) also meets a young contender for the title Alyson McKechin.
It most certainly be a very exciting day and with many Past Captains (The Video above was taken at the last County championship in 2007) coming along for Lunch. -----  It will therefore also be a day for old friends to meet.

PLEASE DO COME ALONG AND GIVE THE GIRLS YOUR SUPPORT --

Senior Team Members to the Fore (again!!)

Renfrewshire County Team members Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm), Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) and Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) have been selected to represent Scotland in some early season events.

Megan and Alyson will represent Scotland in the Welsh Ladies' Open Amateur 54 hole stroke play championship at Ashburnham Golf Club 5 - 6 May 2012 while Eilidh and Alyson will represent Scotland in the Irish Ladies' Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at The Island Golf Club, May 26 - 27.

I am sure everyone in the County will join me in congratulating our players and wish them every success for these events.

Unfortunately our current Champion, Eilidh Briggs cannot defend her title this year at Erskine due to University Golf Commitments but we wish her good luck.

SLGA WEST DIVISION - DIRECTOR

Ladies, I have received a letter from the SLGA seeking a nomination for the post of Director in our West Division. The Board meets 4 - 6 times a year in addition to the AGM and meetings are on weekdays. "A high level of expertise and ability to make a significant contribution to the Association in Championship Golf would be advantageous.", says the letter.

If anyone is interested in seeking nomination or simply wishing further information, please do not hesitate to contact me - email is probably best.

JUNIOR COACHING AT PLAYSPORT EAST KILBRIDE

12 enthusiastic juniors took part in the coaching session at East Kilbride today with Lesley MacKay. Despite the cold wind they managed to play a friendly two-ball-foursomes.

EILIDH AND ALYSON HAVE BEEN PLAYING IN THE LEVERET TROPHY

Amy Boulden celebrated her selection to play for GB and Ireland in the Curtis Cup match at The Nairn from June 8 to 10 by winning the first prestigious 36-hole women's open tournament of the season -  The Leveret Trophy over the Formby Ladies Golf Club course in Lancashire.

Renfrewshire's Eilidh Briggs and Alyson McKechin were both playing in it.
Alyson had 2 terrific rounds and was 1 under par to finish well up the field.
