RLCGA PAST CAPTAIN JEAN BROWN HAS DIED AND FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

Some memories of Jean Brown - Click to enlarge
It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death Past RLCGA Captain Jean Brown of Erskine Golf Club on Monday 25th April.
Jean was champion of Erskine 7 times (1964, 1965, 1971 and 1973 -76)
She was runner up in the RLCGA County Championship 3 times - 1967,1970 and 1973 with Heather Anderson winning on each occasion.
Captain of RLCGA - 1975 - 1977
Played for the Scottish Vets Team on numerous occasions
Lady Captain of Erskine G C - 1980
Was a County Team player for many years and in :
1981:Represented Renfrewshire in the Scottish County Finals- won by Northern Counties finals at Douglas Park — Renfrewshire was runner up
1982 : Renfrewshire won the County Finals at Peebles when Wendy Cameron was Captain — It was said young boys were keen to caddy and all the officials thought they would go after the young ones, but no, they wished to caddy for JEAN BROWN as she was such a character !

Her great County "partner in crime" was Mae Noble of Erskine (who now lives in Elie) and both were seen on many occasions, before and after county medals and matches, playing the fruit machines and having much laughter and fun.
Both Jean and Mae were eventually dropped from the County Team in 1988 when Eileen Gibb became Captain and tossed the two old stalwarts out to let way for younger blood!!
Past Captains in 2007

In 2007 Jean attended her last Past Captains lunch at the County Championship at Erskine and watched Megan Briggs tee off against Clare-Marie Carlton (now MacCauley ) in the final - Megan won. -- Sheila Goudie was the starter - CLICK HERE TO SEE SHORT VIDEO - apologies for poor quality !!

Jean was still able to meet the late Dorothea Hastings and many of her friends for lunch on many occasions at Erskine golf Club , but unfortunately her failing sight put an end to her golfing talents.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends  - FOR FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS  -- CLICK HERE

OLD RANFURLY PAIRING WIN THE WINTER FOURSOMES.

Once again the Renfrewshire ladies had the courtesy of East Renfrewshire Golf Club, this time for the final of the Winter Foursomes and we are most grateful to then once again for allowing us to use the course.
The 1st Tee - Marilyn, Birgit, Evy and Fiona

The final was between Fiona Roger and Evy McGregor (Ranfurly Castle) and Birgit Clark and Marilyn Muir (Old Ranfurly).
The conditions were much improved from last week and the course had dried out amazingly well. The conditions overhead were perfect with no wind but with quite a chilly feel to the atmosphere.

Fiona and Evy were slow to start and found themselves 2 down after 2 holes. They managed to half the 3rd and went on to win the next 2 holes to bring them to all square at the 6th. After that it was a bit of 'ding-dong' battle with the match all square stepping on to the 14th tee. Unfortunately for Evy and Fiona the water hazard at the 14th and the 15th proved a bit of a problem and Birgit and Marilyn went 2 up.
Fiona and Evy had a chance to get it back to 1 down with 2 to play as their opposition found the left-hand greenside bunker and took 4 to get on the green to their 3. Fiona and Evy's putt from the back of the 16th looked incredibly quick but it was in fact, incredibly slow and sadly, it took them too many to get to the hole and the rest is history!
It was a close fought match with some good golf both off the tee and on the greens and, as always, played with the usual Renfrewshire camaraderie which is our hallmark.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FREDA - 80 YEARS YOUNG TODAY

Freda Tuck who has been our dedicated results secretary for numerous years is celebrating her BIG birthday today.
She has toiled tirelessly over the years working quietly in the background for the County keeping control of the competitions, results and handicaps.
She has even in the last year been able to set up all members details in the new ClubV1 software where the County holds addresses, telephone numbers, CDH numbers, email addresses and now your subscription payments. This allows the Renfrewshire County convenors (Captain, Vice Captain, Past Captain Treasurer, Results Secretary and Secretary) full access and is now looking good for the future.

 -  Thank you Freda  for all your hard work and have a Happy Birthday today.

With best wishes from  your webmaster Carol, President Jennifer, Captain Gillian, Vice Captain June and all at RLCGA.

Semi-Finals
Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) v Jennifer Rankine (Haggs Castle)
Both started off with nice steady golf but Jennifer took an early lead and was 3 up at the turn after Donna had 3 bogeys. Jennifer continued to play par golf and after a birdie at the 14th went on to win by 4 & 3.

Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewhire) v Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm)
The morning started off dry and sunny but still very cold.
Steady golf was played by both ladies with Gillian going 1 down at the turn. Both birdied the 10th, then Eilidh also birdied the 14th and closed out the match at the 15th to win by 4 & 3. Great scoring with Eilidh 3 under par and Gillian only 1 over.

Final

Jennifer Rankine (Haggs Castle) v Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm)

By the time the girls teed off at 2 pm the rain came in making it even colder than the morning with a northerly wind. As the afternoon progressed they had to contend with icy sleet showers. Just after the match finished, driving snow swept across the course.

Eilidh went out in level par and was 4 up. Then Jennifer birdied the 10th and won the 12th to go back to two down. They then halved the 13th and unfortunately hit the ball out of bounds on the 14th and Eilidh had a birdie to go 3 up. Both had great pars at the 15th and 16th with Eilidh winning her 4th Championship by 3 & 2.

Final of the Irvine Trophy.

Linda and Elizabeth

It was fitting that local player Linda Ellery (h/cap 19) and Ralston's Elizabeth Russell (h/cap 12) played some lovely golf in the inaugural Handicap Championship Final for the Irvine Trophy.
After a par start by Linda, Elizabeth quickly went 3 up after 5 holes. However Linda fought well to bring it back to all square at the 9th.
At the 12th hole, Linda took the lead and was 2 up after the 14th hole. The key turning point came at the 15th where Elizabeth had a great drive but unfortunately her ball reached the burn. However Linda had an excellent birdie then finished the match winning the 16th for a 4 & 2 victory.

2016 CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHPLAY RESULTS - DAY 1

REPORT BY SANDRA LITTLEJOHN

Thursday morning proved itself to be a much brighter day weather-wise for the 16 qualifiers in the first round of the Championship.

East Renfrewshire Golf Club was much drier underfoot with the greens retaining their excellent quality from the day before.

Championship (Round 1 - Morning)

Game 1 - played between Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) and Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle). The match was played in good spirit and although Jennifer was 1 up most of the game, Donna pulled it back to all square at the 12th and went on to win 3 and 2.

Game 2 - played between Heather Mushet (Elderslie) and Gillian McGinlay (Cochrane Castle). There wasn’t much between the two players over the first 9 holes with Gillian being 2 up on the turn. Gillian eventually closed the game out 5 and 4.

Game 3 - played between Jennifer Rankine (Haggs Castle) and Liz Stewart (Greenburn). Jennifer took an early lead and was pegged back to only 1 up at the 8th. However, Jennifer birdied 9th, 10th, 13th and 14th to win the match 5 and 4.

Game 4 - saw two Ranfurly Castle ladies contest one another in this first round match with Denise Cowan comfortably beating Fiona Roger 7 and 6.

Game 5 - played between Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) and Anne Judge (Ranfurly Castle). Defending champion Gillian lost the first but rallied and was 3 up after 8 holes. Anne had good pars at the 9th and 10th to peg Gillian back to 1 up. Gillian, however, won the next 4 holes to finish the victor 4 and 3.

Game 6 - played between Carol Fell (Ranfurly Castle) and Carol Whyte (Milngavie) in what was a very friendly and good natured game. Carol Fell, perfectly on line with her shot, hit the marker post at the 5th which sadly ricocheted 20 yards backwards. Carol Whyte, running out overall winner by 7 and 6, played solidly and putted well throughout the game.

Game 7 - played between Shirley Back (Gleddoch) and Jan Macnab (Ranfurly Castle). Shirley started poorly with Jan playing steady and scoring remained tight for most of the game. Shirley eventually ran out the winner on the 17th green with a 3 and 1 score-line.

Game 8 - played between June Lockhart (Gleddoch) and Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm). Having missed last year’s championship through injury, Eilidh is back with a bang and although June played well she eventually lost 6 and 5.

AFTERNOON REPORT

The weather remained bright for the afternoon session and the games went as follows:

Championship (Round 2 - Afternoon)

Game 2 - played between Jennifer Rankine (Haggs Castle) and Denise Cowan (Ranfurly Castle). This match went to the 18th with Jennifer finishing 1 up. It was a tightly fought match with some excellent golf by both players.

Game 3 - played between Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) and Carol Whyte (Milngavie). Gillian started well with a birdie at 4 to go 1 up. The scoring was good with Gillian being 3 up on the turn. Carol had a good up and down par at the 12th. Gillian eventually went on to win 4 and 3 birding the 13th and 15th.

Game 4 - played between Shirley Back (Gleddoch) and Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm). Eilidh streaked into a good lead but Shirley stuck-in and the game eventually finished on the 16th.

Game 2 - played between Elizabeth Russell (Ralston) and Anita McMillan (Erskine). It was a very competitive game with Elizabeth running out the victor winning 4 and 3.
