ALYSON MCKECHIN STRUGGLES IN THE OPENING FIRST ROUND IN PORTUGAL

Scotland's trio of Alyson McKechin (Elderslie), Germany-based Rachel Taylor and Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) posed no threat to the leaders in the first round of the Portuguese women's amateur international stroke-play championship over 72 holes at Montado Golf Club, near Lisbon today.

Alyson, had a seven-over-par 79 for a share of 71st place.
Taylor returned a 71 for joint 85th place and Summers had an 82 to be joint 94th.
Germany's Roberta Roeller had no problems in moving two shots ahead of the field of 103 with a six-under-par 66.
Defending champion Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell), winner by 11 strokes last year, had, by her high standards, an indifferent start with a par 72 which leaves her six shots off the pace but in a joint ninth position.

The Ladies’ Golf Union International Selection Panel has today named a Great Britain & Ireland preliminary squad of 12 players for the 37th Curtis Cup match against the United States at The Nairn Golf Club, Scotland from June 8 to 10, 2012.

Amy Boulden, Holly Clyburn, Kelsey MacDonald, Pamela Pretswell and Kelly Tidy were the Great Britain & Ireland team of five, captained by Tegwen Matthews, who beat Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa to win the Astor Trophy (an international team match-play tournament played every four years) at Fairhaven GC, Lancashire in June 2011.
Amy Boulden, Holly Clyburn, Kelsey MacDonald, Pamela Pretswell, Stephanie Meadow, Leona Maguire and Kelly Tidy played for GB&I in the 2010 Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Royal Porthcawl last June.
Holly Clyburn, Leona and Lisa Maguire, Pamela Pretswell played in the 2010 Curtis Cup match at Essex County Club, Massachusetts. Kelsey MacDonald was first reserve, Stephanie Meadow second reserve and Amy Boulden fourth reserve for that match.
Becky Harries is the 2011 Welsh Ladies’ (Close) Amateur Champion, beating Amy Boulden in the final. Becky won all six matches (three foursomes, three singles) for Wales in the 2011 Women’s Home Internationals at Hillside GC, Lancashire last September. Congratulations go to Susan Reid (Kilmacolm) and Barbara Lyle (Whitecraigs) who have won through to the final of the Winter Foursomes. They played their semi final match against the Whitecraigs pairing of Morag Little and Thea Morgan and won 1up
The match went right down to the last green when they played their tie on Monday of this week. Susan said the match was very good and they were very lucky that they could even see to finish the match as it was nearly 4:30pm when they finished!
They now meet the winners of the other semi final between Mary Hardie and Helen Abram (Ranfurly Castle) and Angela Fergusson (Eastwood) and Julie Will (Ranfurly Castle)

The countdown has started with a vengeance towards the June 8-10 staging of the 37th Curtis Cup encounter at The Nairn Golf Club, – a biennial, eight-a-side three-day match between the best female amateur golfers in Great Britain & Ireland and their counterparts from the United States. EILIDH KNOCKED OUT OF THE JONES DOHERTY CHALLENGE CUP

The second round of the Jones-Doherty Challenge Cup was a bad one for GB and I Curtis Cup team contenders in this week's Orange Blossom Tour compeition at Coral Ridge Country Club, Lauderdale in Florida.

Woodhall Spa's Holly Clyburn, who played in the 2010 match against the Americans, lost at the 20th to Meghan Stasi, twice winner of the US women's mid-amateur title and beaten at the 19th by Kelsey MacDonald in the semi-finals of the 2010 British women's amateur championship at Ganton.
And Kelsey, desperate to make her Curtis Cup debut in her home town of Nairn in the June 8-10 match, lost heavily by 6 and 4 to Annie Dulman, an 18-year-old American whose name means nothing on this side of the Atlantic but who turned in a brilliant display against MacDonald.
Kelsey had a match-play tiger by the tail because her opponent was approximately six under par for the holes played!
In the quarter-finals Stasi will play the defending champion, 15-year-old Charley Hull (Woburn) from Kettering. Hull had a 3 and 2 win over E Gimpel in the second round. Hull, like Kelsey's conqueror, was six under par, this time for 16 holes.
The only other British player in the last eight is European women's universities champion and Stirling student Harriet Beasley (Woburn). She beat Daniela Lendl, one of Ivan Lendl's golfing daughters, by 2 and 1 and now plays American M Lui, surprise conqueror of Scottish girls champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm and Stirling Univerity).
Briggs lost by 4 and 3.
In the first flight competition for first-round losers, Jordana Graham (Southerness and Stirling University) beat M West by 2 and 1 to enter the quarter-finals but team-mate Rebecca Wilson (Grange, Monifieth) lost by one hole to J Carmichael.
Another Stirling student, Mhairi McKay (West Kilbride), who did not qualify for the championship match-play flight, is through to the semi-finals of the Second Flight. She had a one-hole win over D Proctor.

Top seed Charley Hull (Woburn), 15, pictured by courtesy of Steve Jackson, began her defence of the Jones-Doherty Challenge Cup with a smooth 6 and 5 win over American Sami Stewart in this week's Orange Blossom Tour event at Coral Ridge Country Club, Fort Lauderdale in Florida.

Kelsey MacDonald, the No 3 seed from Stirling University and Nairn Dunbar GC, also won with something to spare. She beat the No 30 qualifier, N McNicholas, by 4 and 3.

Scottish Girls Champion and Renfrewshire County Champion Eilidh Briggs (Stirling University and Kilmacolm) survived the longest tie of the first round. Eilidh, the No 4 seed, beat T Caldabaugh, the No 29 qualifier, at the 21st.

Rebecca Wilson (Stirling University and Grange, Monifieth) gave Curtis Cup player Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa), the No 9 seed, a run for her money before the English player won by 2 and 1.

Clyburn now plays American Meghan Stasi, twice a winner of the US women's mid-amateur title, Curtis Cup player at St Andrews in 2008 and beaten semi-finalist in the British women's open amateur championship at Ganton in 2010.

Eilidh Briggs has finished in 7th Place in the South Atlantic Women's Amateur Championship at the Oceanside Country Club Ormond Beach, Florida today " The Sally" --- 2 Strokes ahead of Curtis Cup hopeful Holly Clyburn

Considering this is Eilidh's first visit to the Orange Blossom Tour and her first experience of the Oceanside CC course, it was an encouraging performance for the 18-year-old who birdied the second and short fourth on Saturday but dropped shots at the first, short ninth, short 14th and 16th in halves of 36-36.

EILIDH HAS HAD 2 GOOD ROUNDS IN THE WOMEN'S SOUTH ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP

It would take an Act of Parliament - Scotland's or the UK one - to keep 15-year-old Charley Hull out of the GB and I Curtis Cup team for Nairn, considering the way she is playing on the Orange Blossom Tour in Florida.
Last week she finished like a thoroughbred to take a winnng lead over the last round of the Harder Hall Invitational (having won the match-play championship in her closing event of the 2011 Florida Tour).
On now to the second event - "The Sally" (short for South Atlantic Ladies Amateur Championship) - at Oceanside Country Club, Ormond Beach and the Kettering kid, who is a member of the posh Woburn Golf Club, is lying second after the first 36 holes with a 72, 68 (140)

Scottish girls match-play champion and Stirling student Eilidh Briggs had an encouraging 75 for joint sixth after the first round and in the 2nd round today Eilidh has had another 75 to lie in 9th place with a total of 150
Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa), a Curtis Cupper in 2010 and pretty certain to get the nod again from the GB and I selectors for the June 8-10 encounter with the Americans improved on her round of 75 yesterday with a 68 today.

ALYSON FINISHES IN 15TH PLACE IN SPAIN

Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) and Jessica Meek (Carnoustie Ladies) finished a creditable joint 15th and 22nd respectively in the inaugural Spanish women's amateur international stroke-play championship over three rounds at Alicante Golf Club today.
Alyson had rounds of 73, 77 and 75 for a total of nine-over-par 225. Jessica scored 73, 77 and 78 for 228.
Winner was South Korean-born, Spanish domiciled Ha Rang Lee with scores of 67, 71 and 74 for four-under-par 212.
Leading British finishers were the Welsh pair Becky Harris (joint sixth on 219) and Amy Boulden (joint 10th on 224.

The 2011 Renfrewshire Inter County County Foursomes handicap winners Mary Hardie and Helen Abram (Ranfurly Castle) have progressed to the semi final stages of this years winter foursomes.
They beat Maureen Cook and Sheila Shaw (Lochwinnoch). The match was played yesterday over Lochwinnoch.
Susan Reid (Kilmacolm) and Barbara Lyle (Whitecraigs) won against Jean Irvine and Agnes Williamson (Ranfurly Castle).
Their match was played today at Ranfurly Castle.

Carnoustie's Jessica Meek and Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) - pictured left have made it through to Wednesday's final 36 holes in the Spanish women's amateur international stroke-play championship over four rounds at Alicante Golf Club.
Both Scots had matching opening rounds of 73 and 77 for 150 to be sharing 20th place, 12 shots behind the leader, Ha Rang Lee, the South Korean-born Spaniard who has shot 67 and 71 for six-under 138 anda three-shot lead.
To qualify for Wednesday's final 36 holes, a player to had to have an aggregate of 157 or better for the first two rounds.
Lauren Whyte (St Regulus (84-77) and Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie) (84-77) both failed by four on 161.
Rachel Walker (Dumfries and Co) (87-79) and Connie Jaffrey (Troon Portland) (81-85) both missed out on 166.

ALYSON IN TOP TEN AT THE END OF DAY 1 IN SPAIN

Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) ended the opening day of the Spanish women's amateur international stroke-play championship in a creditable joint ninth position at Alicante Golf Club.

She shot a one-over-par 73 to be six shots behind leader Ha Rang Lee, of South Korean extraction but now a domaciled Spaniard.
Alyson birdied the first, sixth, ninth, 11th and 14th but marred her card with double bogeys at the second and 12th. Jessica Meek (Carnoustie) also shot a 73.
Connie Jaffrey (Troon Porland) is tied for 60th place with an 81. Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie) had a disappointing 84 to be sharing 73rd place with Lauren Whyte (St Regulus).

EILIDH BRIGGS IS PLAYING IN THE ORANGE BLOSSOM TRAIL

Renfrewshire County Champion Eilidh Briggs is representing Stirling University on the Orange Blossom Trail in Florida this month.
She has completed the first competition at the Harder Hall Invitational.
Kettering-based Charley Hull, No 10 in the Women's World Amateur Rankings, is off and running for what promises to be another wonderful season for the 15-year-old Woburn GC member.
Starting the final round of the Harder Hall Women's Invitational two shots behind 16-year-old, World No 8 Ariya Jutanugarn from Bangkok), Charley, as we have come to expect, rose to the occasion with a closing round of three-under-par 69 which took her past Ariya down the home straight and on to a two-shot victory with a six-under-par total of 282 - and that over a Sebring, Florida course which had been toughened up since last year with the addition of quite a few bunkers.
The "Harder Hall" was started in 1956 and the winners' roll is studded with names of girls who have gone on to win fame and fortune - but it is believed that Charley Hull is the youngest ever winner. She will have her 16th birthday on March 20. She is certainly the first winner to hail from Europe.

Hull, winner of the last match-play event on the 2011 Orange Blossom Tour before she went on to win the Welsh and English women's amateur stroke-play titles and be beaten in the English women's match-play final, can be considered a certainty to be chosen for the GB and I team of eight for the Curtis Cup match against the Americans at Nairn GC from June 8-10.
She played for GB and I in the Junior Vagliano Trophy match at Royal Porthcawl last June but this will be her first full GB and I cap.

Scotland's Kelsey MacDonald fared worst of the three GB and I Curtis Cup team contenders in the Harder Hall Invitational.
The 21-year-old Stirling student and Nairn Dunbar GC member finished a disappointing 31st on 23-over-par 311 - 29 shots behind Charley Hull and 16 behind Holly Clyburn.
Kelsey had started brightly enough to be in joint seventh place with a first-round 75 but she gradually slipped down the field with subsequent rounds of 81, 75 and 80.
The tournament probably came just a bit early for MacDonald. Hull had been warming up in Majorca while Clyburn finished fourth in last week's Dixie Women's Amateur elsewhere in Florida.
Kelsey usually steps up the pace in the second event of the Florida circuit, the South Atlantic Ladies championship (known as the "Sally") over four rounds, starting at Oceanside Country Club on Tuesday (January 10).
MacDonald still outshone the rest of her Stirling team-mates at Harder Hall.

Inter County Foursomes at Cardross Golf Club -- 18 - 20 June 2012. Your help as caddies is invaluable to the girls in the team and they are always very appreciative of your assistance. I would also like to welcome our new members and encourage them to play in our competitions. You will be made most welcome and meet new friends - as I have done in the years of my membership. Despite the bad weather all the the matches have been able to be played or nearly played !

The last tie was played today -- Wednesday 30th November (St. Andrew's Day) -- the day after the floods -- between Jean Irvine and Agnes Williamson (Ranfurly Castle) against Linda Stevenson and Lorna Howie (Whitecraigs). The match was meant to be played over Whitecraigs but with the HORRENDOUS CONDITIONS the match was transferred to Ranfurly Castle.

The message your webmaster got was " Whitecraigs Golf Course was closed and we used the 12 hole stroke index and played at Ranfurly Castle in what can only be described horrendous weather"
Well done to you all for managing to endure the tie.

The SLGA Autumn Mailing to clubs was posted on 16 November 2011.
It contains a letter from the Chairman, Shona Malcolm, a conditions of competition checklist, the mailing update form and the 2012 subscription form.

Seminars on handicapping and the Rules of Golf will be held between 6 December 2011 and 19 January 2012 at locations round the country. An invitation and booking form, for a maximum of 4 attendees per club (ladies and Men), are also in the pack.

The SLGA are seeking candidates to act as Rules Officials. To qualify you must have passed the SGU Rules Exam. If you have not passed this exam (2 day event with exam at the end) you can apply to do this, at your own cost.
Once successful, you will be asked to give time to assist in Scottish events. Thereafter, at the invitation of the SLGA, you may be put forward to sit the more advanced R&A exam. The SLGA fund this exam.

WEST RENFREWSHIRE LEAGUE AGM

The West Renfrewshire League AGM was held at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club yesterday - Wednesday 9 November at 7.30pm.
18 ladies attended with tea being provided at the beginning of the evening. The business was completed promptly allowing the representatives a chance to mix and also to put some provisional dates in the 2012 playing diary.
The Divisional Trophies were presented to the winning Clubs by Ranfurly Castle's Lady Captain Karin Mackenzie. Sue Lyon, team captain for Ranfurly Castle, collected the Division 1 Trophy

Final Results:
Division 1: Ranfurly Castle and Gleddoch were level on points and games won. Ranfurly Castle were confirmed as the winners after a count back of "holes up".
Division 2: Winners: Renfrew, Runners up: Caldwell.
Division 3: Kilmacolm and Gourock were joint leaders with Kilmacolm the winners as they had won the most games.

Janette McCartney (Erskine) and Carol Fell (Ranfurly Castle) the holders of the Winter Foursomes Trophy were knocked out of this years knockout by new RLCGA members Julie Will (Ranfurly Castle) and Angela Fergusson (Eastwood) when they played today over a rather driech Ranfurly Castle.
Janette and Carol who had to give 9 shots and despite were out in 42 (4 over par) and were 1 up at the turn. However Julie and Angela played very well and with a few poor putts in the inward half by the title holders they were able to win through to the next round with a 2&1 victory.

ALYSON AND EILIDH HAVE A GOOD TIME IN SPAIN

"The trip to Spain was great. It wasn't the best weather over there as it rained for a few days but it was alot warmer than back home. We all got some really productive practice in when we were there. Mainly focusing on our short game and putting. It was a very enjoyable 5 days and everyone enjoyed themselves"

The 102nd Renfrewshire AGM was held last night at Haggs Castle Golf Club. Maureen Woodhead pictured above is our new Captain, and Gillian McGinlay pictured below is our new Vice Captain.

The other main news of the evening was the appointment of Wendy Cameron as Honorary Life President. She follows on from Kathleen McNeil who died in 2006. Wendy was absolutely delighted to accept this highest of positions within Renfrewshire County.

Captain Trish Brown opened the meeting by welcoming Honorary President Eileen, Honorary members, Past Captains to our one hundred and second annual general meeting. She was delighted to see so many members present (approximately 55) and thanked Haggs Castle Golf Club for once again allowing us to host our AGM in their clubhouse.

Secretary Jean Irvine announced that there were 73 apologies

The minutes of the meeting held on 3rd November, 2010, had already been distributed and were taken as read

Matters Arising: None

TREASURER'S REPORT BY JAN MACNAB

We have a healthy cash balance in the bank at year end – and if you look at the sheets, it appears that we have done better than last year (a profit of £3,200 rather than a loss of about £800).

However - this difference can be completely explained by 3 things:

• Firstly, the generous donation of £2,000 from the R&A which we received towards the end of 2010. This was reported at last year’s AGM and the money can be spent as we wish, so we are currently holding it for when it is really needed.
• Secondly, the very successful fund-raising raffle which was drawn at the dinner in March and raised £1,336. Thank you to everyone who bought and sold tickets.
• And thirdly, the fact that we disappointingly did not get to play at the County finals in September. As I explained last year, qualifying leads to additional expense of about £1,000 (which is why we held the raffle). As we ended up not having to spend this extra £1,000, we can keep it on hand to spend when we hope the Team return to their winning ways next year!

Everything else was really much the same as last year, subject to the trend common everywhere that costs are up slightly and income is down slightly. The new Windshirts have proved very popular, with I think 24 sold in total, which does give some income for the County. Thanks again to Sheila Robson for masterminding this. I am sure many of you saw the photo on the website of her stock management system!

Membership numbers are down very slightly, but during 2011 the number of resignations was nearly matched by 16 new members. Please continue to encourage any ladies at your Club, who are not already members, to join. I am sure you can persuade them of the benefits.

The proposal is to keep subscriptions at the same level i.e. £30 for 2012, plus the £10 joining fee.

This year, with the increasing use of technology and e-mail, there are no subscription notice envelopes to fight over at the desk (a significant saving in time, envelopes and postage). However Jean and I will be available after the meeting and will be happy to receive subscriptions this evening.

Many thanks once again from me to Jean for all her work in collecting subscriptions and co-ordinating the Membership lists. If anyone has any changes of details especially e-mail addresses, please let us know.

In conclusion:

I would like to put the following proposals to the meeting:
1) That the 2011 accounts be adopted by the meeting
2) That the Annual Subscription for 2012 be set at £30.

SECRETARY’S REPORT -- BY JEAN IRVINE

Membership numbers for this year have dropped, we have had 20 resignations, 16 new members and we have no waiting list. At present the membership is 233, consisting of 199 full members, 10 non playing members, 12 Honorary members, and 12 Juniors.
All venues for next years competitions have been confirmed, copies of the dates are available tonight. Of particular interest, The Championship this year will be held at Erskine on 18/19/20th April, our Sunday medal at Ranfurly Castle on 29th April and our afternoon medal at Cochrane Castle on 8th August . The Inter County Jamboree will be held at Cardross on 18 – 20th June.
The weather this year was mixed, our only problem medal was Eastwood which was postponed on our first date, Eastwood GC very kindly gave us another date and unfortunately this was every bit as bad as the first day and was eventually cancelled.
Numbers for competitions were similar to last year. The Autumn Greensomes had 36 couples playing and although Renfrew was a little muddy, this proved a very good competition.
Entries through the website are another success, I think emails prompting entries is also helpful.
I have enjoyed my first year as Secretary - I admit to being a bit apprehensive being thrown in at the deep end but with lots of help from Trish, Jan and of course Morag Turner as well as her husband Gordon, I have got through without too many hiccoughs, although you will have noticed my deliberate mistakes I am sure.
My only worry is that I don’t have everyones email address, if you or anyone you know is not getting emails, please let me know.

JUNIOR CONVENOR REPORT -- BY MAUREEN MITCHELL

This year our Junior Girls’ Subcommittee was made up of Liz Hale, Jinty Roger and myself.

We started the golf season by organising coaching sessions at the Playsport Centre in East Kilbride with our County coach, Lesley MacKay, during February and March. The ‘A’ squad involved 14 girls nearly all of whom have managed to reduce their handicaps during the summer – a good sign of the success of the coaching.
In January I had sent out forms to all the Ladies’ Clubs asking for information about their junior girls. Only 7 Clubs returned the forms – quite disappointing! From these lists we selected 15 girls and invited them to coaching sessions during April. Only 9 girls attended – again disappointing – however we felt the poor weather was a contributing factor.
All the girls in both squads really enjoyed their sessions with Lesley who works them all quite hard but manages to make the lessons interesting and fun.
We also held our annual ‘Fun’ day for juniors with either high handicaps or none at all with 13 young girls attending. Once again we discovered some good new talent. A 9 year old called Fay Hendry is a name worth watching out for as she can hit amazing shots for her age and is full of enthusiasm and energy.

The 2011 Kennedy Salver Team

Our 6 lowest handicap girls from our ‘A’ squad represented the County in the Kennedy Salver at Erskine GC. The team played extremely well, only missing being winners again by ½ point from Ayrshire. We were the host County and the arrangements were very capably organised by Liz. Freda Tuck also contributed greatly to the smooth running of the event as she produced all our colour coded scoring sheets etc., manned the computer and kept a running programme of results. We could not have managed without her!
In September, we held our annual Campbell Clock County Stableford competitions at Whitecraigs GC. We were extremely fortunate this year as it was a lovely sunny afternoon. Altogether 37 girls played in the three competitions – 13 played the Par 3 course, another 13 managed 8 holes on the ‘big’ course and 11 girls competed over 18 holes for the Trophy. Our Treasurer Jan’s daughter Alison Macnab won the putting competition and was the Par 3 winner. Connie Dodds from Kilmacolm won the 8 hole event and Lyndsay McCall from Williamwood scored an amazing 46 points to win the Campbell Clock. The Runner Up with 38 points was Charlotte McCluskey from Haggs Castle.

Lyndsay and Charlotte joined up with Samantha Cowan, Laura Craig, Emily Weir and Lauren Coventry to play a ‘Friendly’ game against Ayrshire on Sunday. Unfortunately we lost 2 games and won 1 but two of the matches went to the last green. Earlier in July we had organised a match at Caldwell but Ayrshire was unable at the last moment to gather enough girls to play so we only played one ‘Friendly’ this year.
As I said at the beginning, most of our squad have reduced their handicaps and some by quite a number of strokes. They have also won quite a number of Open competitions as well as winning their Club Championships. Some of the notable achievements are as follows – Samantha Cowan came third in the Nancy Chisholm Tournament at West Kilbride; Alexandra Qayam tied 3rd in the Scottish Boys and Girls’ Under 14 Championship at Aberdour and also won the Category 1 Prize playing with her Dad in the Adult and Junior Tournament at Auchterarder. Emma Kennedy and her Dad won this event, a great achievement in a big field of competitors.
This year we tried another different formula for our Junior Championship. As Eilidh and Alison were now top County players and very busy young ladies, we decided to leave them out and allow our next 4 lowest handicap juniors to compete. Linsey Stevenson played Emma Kennedy at Whitecraigs and Alex played Samantha at Ranfurly Castle in the morning, then the 4 girls rushed along to Old Ranfurly in the afternoon, where the winners Lindsay and Alex played each other in the Final, with Emma and Samantha caddying. It was a great, friendly match with both girls playing some super shots making some of us quite envious! Linsey managed to read the greens better than Alex and won the match at the 16th hole.
Once again we put forward 2 girls’ names – Alex and Emma – to be considered for the SLGA National Coaching but neither girl was accepted. However, both were invited to attend the Scottish Golf Academy winter series of events and Alex has now heard that she is receiving funding from the SGU golf Development Programme and is now being coached by a National coach.
It is definitely a case of watch this space, keep in touch with the website and I am certain that you will read about some great achievements from our Juniors.
Lastly, I would like to finish by thanking Liz, Jinty and Trish for all their help and support during my 3 years as Junior Convenor. I did not really volunteer for this job, having my arm twisted hard by Christeen, but I have enjoyed organising arrangements and working with the girls. I believe it is a good idea having a Subcommittee and I wish Liz and Jinty every success working with the Juniors next year.

CAPTAIN'S REPORT 2011 -- BY TRISH BROWN

On reading last year’s report I noticed that I mentioned at the beginning about all the meetings which I had attended as your representative. Since becoming your Captain I have been to 17 different meetings over the past 2 years..these do not include our own committee meetings or West of Scotland meetings of which there have been another 10. Some of these have been County Captains Forums in Perth or Dunblane which were helpful as it is good to hear how the other Counties run their Associations. There have also been joint SLGA and SGU meetings where we have discussed The Central Data Base for Handicaps, the Development and pathways for potential young golfers, the Performance of our elite players, the Management of golf clubs, Course rating, the way we can all help Tourism in Scotland through golf and also the proposed Amalgamation of the SLGA with the SGU. I must say that quite a lot of this was interesting but in the end the most disappointing aspect of all after all the talking and discussion was the result of the Amalgamation vote where over 90% of the SLGA voted FOR the proposal, and the SGU Areas voted AGAINST by 10 to 6. Maureen and I attended another Counties meeting recently and I must say that the pessimistic feeling was that we are a long way from amalgamating with the men…………there seems to be quite a bit of resentment on both sides and I feel pretty depressed about it after all the time and effort which was put in. Most of the SLGA office bearers were due to retire after October which was the date for amalgamation but because this is now not going to happen the SLGA needs to vote in some new board members so if any of you would like to volunteer…..?

A Toast to Renfrewshire

Every second year we hold a Dinner and this was held in March where the guest speaker was the immediate past Captain of the R and A, Mr Colin Brown. He told us about his experiences throughout his year and the golfers he met who are all now his new best friends! He highlighted the visits to the Masters at Augusta and the PGA at Whistling Straits and especially the Open at St Andrews where he had the honour to meet and be photographed with all the past Open Champions. The County were lucky to have been donated a voucher by the St Andrews Links Trust for a fourball at the Castle Course just outside St Andrews for which we had sold raffle tickets and Colin was delighted to draw Anne Terrey’s ticket out of the hat at the dinner. Anne and her Greenock Girls duly played at the Castle in August ….unfortunately on a rather poor day but they did eventually get to enjoy the good views over St Andrews.

We really have been tested to the limit this year by adverse weather conditions. It became extremely hard to get the Winter Foursomes ties played mainly because of ice and snow but eventually the final was played at Kilmacolm between Janette McCartney from Erskine and her partner Carol Fell from Ranfurly Castle and Glennis Rentoul and Margaret Gray both from Old Ranfurly. We actually had a nice day for this and an exciting 1st nine holes when it was anybody’s game but Carol and Janette forged ahead and won the winter foursomes by 6&4 … congratulations to them.

Eilidh Briggs - 2011 RLCGA Champion

It always feels so early in the season but the Championship was played here at Haggs in April and we had some fantastic golf played in great spirit! Eilidh Briggs spent the three days giving us a demonstration of near perfect golf by firstly having the best net score of 71…..2 under par on the Open Day……which was 5 ahead of the rest. She then went on to beat her sister, Megan by 2&1 in the final. Before that there was a thrilling semi-final between Eilidh and Alyson McKechin where they were throwing birdies at each other. Eilidh just clinched victory at the eighteenth by 1up. Meanwhile sister Megan won her semi-final against Carol Whyte. As Captain it was very gratifying to see those in the squad qualifying for the knock out stages and that did happen this year. Anyway we congratulate Eilidh on winning the County Championship for the second time.

I feel that you as members should know about our talented youngsters of whom we are so proud.

Eilidh Briggs - 2011 Scottish Girls Champion

I shall start with Eilidh…our Champion. Eilidh began the year with a handicap of 0.2. She went to Spain with the Scottish girls for some winter training which obviously stood her in good stead because after winning here at Haggs she went on to do well in the Helen Holm at Troon finishing 3rd . She then put the West of Scotland Championship at Lanark in her bag after she had 2 very good scores. And then she was off to Machrihanish for the Scottish Ladies Championship. Well she did not win this but she once again managed to beat her sister, Megan in the semi-final only to lose in the final to Louise Kenney on the most dreadful day possible. The Scottish Girls beckoned in July and we were absolutely thrilled that after playing some fantastic golf, Eilidh was crowned the Scottish Girls Champion.

Eilidh was runner up in the Scottish Schools Championship and in the Munross Trophy. She was once more picked to represent Scotland in the European Team Championships in Sardinia and in the Girls Home Internationals. But the icing on the cake was being awarded her first full cap for the Scottish Ladies team at the Home Internationals. Lastly Eilidh played in the SLGA Champion of Champions at Glasgow Gailes and guess what…yes she won that as well playing 3 under her handicap. Many, many congratulations to Eilidh from all of us for a wonderful year. By the way her handicap is now plus 1.3 and she is no. 3 in the SLGA Order of Merit and is once again and for the last time the winner of the SLGA Junior Order of Merit.

Alyson McKechin

Now Alyson who has also had a tremendous year. She began the year with a handicap of 1.0 She was invited to join the Stirling University students in Florida where she gained great experience playing in the Orange Blossom Tour. Our thanks to Alyson for sending her news to the website…..nice to hear about warmer climes when we are deep in snow! After losing in our semi-final she went on to finish in the top 15 at the Under 18 Irish Strokeplay. She was of course narrowly beaten by Eilidh in our championship but then had a superb 1st round at the Helen Holm. She was runner up to Eilidh in the West of Scotland Championship. At the Scottish she lost in the ¼ final to Megan, did extremely well in the St Rule Trophy and Mackie Bowl then led after the 1st two rounds of the Scottish under 21 Strokeplay at Cardross finishing 3rd. Once again she was picked to represent Scotland in the European Team Championships and the Girls Home Internationals. She had good scores in the British Girls and British Ladies Open and again we were thrilled that she too was awarded her first full cap for the Scottish Ladies team to play at Gullane in the Home Internationals. Many, many congratulations to Alyson as well. She is now our backmarker with a handicap of plus 1.8 in other words plus 2 and is 4th in the SLGA Order of Merit.

Unfortunately neither Alyson or Eilidh can be here tonight because they are away in Spain (lucky things!) -- having some more warm weather training.

Megan Briggs has had a busy year starting on plus 0.1. She announced her engagement at the New Year to Gordon and we wish them many congratulations. Of course she was busy at the beginning of the season with law degree exams so apart from being runner up to Eilidh in our Championship, she did not play as much as usual. I realised of course that she needed to get away from her books and so she I gave her a wee refresher lesson at Williamwood where we won the best scratch score in the County Foursomes in May!! She then went to the Scottish at Machrihanish and was leading qualifier. Megan won through to the semi final only to be beaten by Eilidh in a gripping match. Megan and Eilidh, however won the Eglinton Quaich for Kilmacolm for the Lowest Aggregate Gross Score - Team 1st Round. The most disappointing bit about the Scottish Championship was that our 3 youngsters all ended up in the same half of the draw……so please will you organise it better next year?! By the way I think that Eilidh had better watch out next year because her big sister will be gunning for her! Megan was selected once more for the Scottish team at the European team Championships in Austria, she was 3rd in the Mackie Bowl and 5th in the English Open Strokeplay Championships and it was no wonder therefore that she was picked to play for her country again in the Home Internationals. Unfortunately Scotland did not win the trophy again but with 3 rookies in the team I am sure they will come good again. Megan was Kilmacolm champion once more for the 6th time and she won the Strathclyde University Sportswoman of the Year Award. Megan’s handicap is now plus 1.2 and she is 5th in the SLGA Order of Merit.

Linsey Stevenson - The 2011 RLCGA Junior Champion

Linsey Stevenson who has just left school with 5 As in her Highers has also played very well this year. She has been attending intensive training from the combined SLGA and SGU development programme over the past couple of winters. As Maureen said she is our Junior Champion and she did well at the Scottish Girls being beaten in the semi final in the 2nd flight. She won the Club Championship at Elie. She was selected to play for the Scottish Schools match against English Schools and I am pleased to say that both the girls and boys teams beat the Auld enemy! Her Handicap is now 3.0 and she is Junior Order of Merit no 18.

You can see how busy these young golfers are with tournaments here there and everywhere and representative fixtures as well. I just want to say that we have become quite used to their successes and triumphs and I hope we are not taking this for granted. I do not know of any other county in Scotland who can boast 3 players with handicaps better than plus one and 3 players selected for the full Scottish Team. This is a very special time in our history and we are very lucky to have them as members of our Association and we are extremely proud of them!
Eilidh is now studying Physical Education at Stirling University, Alyson is having a year to concentrate on her golf as a full time amateur and Megan who gained a 2/1 in her Law degree is now doing her diploma year. Linsey is doing a part time course in Graphic Design and concentrating on her golf this year before going to University next year.

And now for the rest of us! (the also rans!)

Mary Hardie and Sheila Gray - Foursomes Winners

I have mentioned already the County Foursomes but the winners of the handicap section were Mary Hardie and Sheila Gray. Three Scratch and 3 handicap couples went forward to the West Inter County finals at Milngavie in June and Megan Briggs and Trish Brown just pipped Donna Jackson and Liz Stewart on a count back to take 3rd place in the scratch section and Mo Neilson and Sandra McDougall were 3rd in the handicap section. We sent some couples to the Commonwealth Spoons at Forres in September but unfortunately no-one from Renfrewshire was in the prize list.

Our Spring Meeting was held at Old Ranfurly and we congratulate Denise Cowan and Birgit Clark for winning the scratch and handicap respectively.

The County Rosebowl is a knockout competition on handicap played over the summer. To qualify for this we take the players with the 8 best combined scores from the April Medal and the Spring Meeting. This year I think we hardly had 8 people who had played in both competitions so in order to make it more competitive perhaps you could try to enter both these next year! As it happens we had a very high class of players this year and in the end Marion Stewart from Kilmacolm and Denise Cowan from Ranfurly Castle reached the final which was played at Ralston. Marion was the winner by 4&2 after playing some very steady golf but well done both of them.

The Autumn Greensomes was played at Renfrew in September. I think we were lucky to get it played at all after the wet stormy weather which we had experienced. The course was playing very long but Sheila Gray and Agnes Williamson must have found it easy because they won with a fantastic 37 points!

In outside competitions Jen Mack just missed out in a play off for the matchplay stages of the Scottish Seniors at Portpatrick and Carol Fell and Sandra Littlejohn lost in the 1st round of the handicap matchplay.
Lorraine Morrow and her partner were 3rd in the Scottish Mixed foursomes and Donna Jackson and Liz Stewart were also 3rd in the Scottish Ladies Foursomes.
I have talked about the Scottish Ladies Championship but I must mention that Carol Whyte and Lorraine Morrow qualified for the 2nd flight at Machrihanish but sadly lost in the 1st round. Carol Whyte and her partner Tracy Masterton have just been beaten in the final of the Daily Mail Foursomes after winning through seven rounds.
At the Scottish Vets last month at Blairgowrie we had some stars. In the Greensomes competition Carol Fell and her partner Helen Faulds retained the Tony Moffat Trophy for best scratch and the Beddows Quaich for the best handicap. Meanwhile June Irons won the Buchanan Cup and Sheila Osborne was 2nd. Congratulations to you all.

At the beginning of the year the squad got together at Braehead for some fun golf followed by a pizza. They started their winter training at Playsport under the guidance of Lesley MacKay to whom we are very grateful. Lesley gives them drills and targets for practice and it is a chance not only to keep swinging through the winter but to get together with each other. The team is picked in May and the 8 players then represent Renfrewshire at the West Inter County Jamboree. This was played at Barassie Golf Club and we were keen to get to the finals again for the 4th year in a row but it was not to be. Ayrshire were the winners this year and they went on to the County Finals in Dumfries where they finished 2nd to Midlothian who won after being runners up for 3 years in a row. Thank you so much to our loyal band of caddies and supporters… we appreciate your help so much and I would just like to mention a very special caddy from Northern Ireland who has been coming to help us for a number of years….some of you will know him as Gerald Bunting but most of us consider him as our 4 leaf clover. This year he was unable to come because his wife Pat was not well. We just hope he and Pat can make it next year to Cardross where we are determined to qualify for the finals once more.

On the administrative side we want to congratulate Beth Paterson who is coming to the end of her term at SLGA in charge of Performance. Beth is also away in Spain with the girls but well done to Beth….I know it has been a huge commitment!
Fiona Roger is Captain of the West Vets and Ruth Henderson and Sheila Shaw are Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Fiona has just handed over the post of Greenlees Secretary to Anne Dunn and we wish them all good luck in their posts.

And now my committee.
No-one could do this job without a lot of help and I want to thank them most sincerely for all their support and friendship over the last 2 years.
Thank you Eileen for supporting me and for attending so many of our representative games.
Our honorary secretary Jean and honorary treasurer Jan have been hard working and reliable…thank you both so much.
Maureen Mitchell rather reluctantly took on the job as Junior Secretary 3 years ago and has worked very hard finding and encouraging young talented girl golfers. I think now that you are glad you did it but you have earned a rest…..thank you so much and please accept this as a small token of our appreciation.
We have 3 ladies who are due to retire after doing 3 years on committee and I want to thank Audrey Barclay for organising the Winter Foursomes through 2 of the worst winters recently, to June Lockhart for being a very efficient and amicable Caddy Mistress. 3 years ago we divided the role of treasurer and Jean Smith took on the mantle of Membership Secretary. She has done a fantastic job and I want to thank her particularly for her fabulous lists which she updates constantly.
To the other members of committee…thank you Sheila for dealing with the County Sweaters etc, Liz and Jinty with the Juniors and all the others for being willing to help with competitions. I wish you all the best for the rest of your time on committee
I have thanked most of my committee but there is no way I can ignore 2 of the people who work away keeping us updated on news and competitions. Carol Fell…what can I say …you are just a wee gem! The website is wonderful but the best news is I won’t be featuring on it after tonight! (unless I win something!) Freda Tuck is so good at organising the competitions and although she is not on committee any more she has been so helpful to us all so thank you for all your work.
Lastly I wish to thank Maureen my Vice-Captain. At least I have done one thing right because she has been an inspired choice and I think we have enjoyed each other’s company…I certainly have and what’s more we led the team to victory last year. You have been fun to be with, always coming up with good ideas and you helped me enormously with team selection. Here’s to reaching the County Finals again next year…I’ll be right behind you sending you scores by text from behind trees!

And that concludes my report for 2011.

Despite my protestations, I have really enjoyed being your Captain for the past 2 years. I have especially loved watching our team playing, though occasionally I had my fingers crossed and my eyes shut! Watching our individual players coming to the top in tournaments was as much enjoyment as watching our less elite players winning the Winter Foursomes or the Rosebowl. Thank you Christeen for inviting me to succeed you. It has been an honour and privilege to be your Captain and I look forward to joining the superb group of Past Captains. I wish Renfrewshire Ladies County Golf Association “orrabest” for the future.

Wendy says a few words of thanks

Before I hand over finally I have one other pleasant task to perform. Sadly a few years ago we lost our Honorary Life President, Kathleen McNeil.
I have great pleasure in announcing that Wendy Cameron has agreed to become our new Honorary Life President. Wendy first joined the County committee in 1974. She became Captain in 1981 and led the County team to win the County Finals in 1982. She was invited on to the SLGA as West Representative in 1984 and was elected Chairman of the SLGA Executive Committee in 1989 whereupon she was given Honorary Membership of the RLCGA. She subsequently became President of the SLGA from 1998 – 2000. I can’t give you all her golfing highlights but Wendy was our Honorary President before Eileen and was a great supporter of our team and our various events.
We are delighted that you have agreed to take on this position and please would you come up to the front and accept this token of our thanks. Come and join us.

REPORT BY MAUREEN WOODHEAD - THE NEW RLCGA CAPTAIN

Election of Office Bearers;

I am indeed honoured to be taking over from Trish as Captain. In the two years I have been her Vice Captain I have watched and learned – and what a teacher she has been. You would think she had trained as a teacher!! - you did??

She has always been on the end of a phone, despite the many other demands on her time, to give advice and help and has been a terrific sounding board. There is no doubt that she will be a hard act to follow, but follow I must and I hope I am up to the task.

As I said when I became Vice Captain, I will do my best.

It gives me great pleasure Trish, to present you with your Past Captain’s badge and also a token of our appreciation of the hard work and time you have given to this County.

The Committee is a team and to this team I welcome my Vice Captain. I first met this person many, many years ago when we played against each other in a County Championship at Whitecraigs. Modesty prevents me from saying who won! Shortly afterwards we played together in the County Team. We have been firm friends since then.

She is a Past Captain and Champion at her home club and is currently the Handicap Secretary there. She is a current member of the Renfrewshire Team, a former County Committee Member and County Championship finalist. In other words, she knows her way around golf – both on and off the course. I am delighted to propose, and this is seconded by Past Captain Trish, Gillian McGinlay as my Vice Captain.

Jean Irvine has been appointed Secretary for her 2nd year and Jan Macnab has been appointed for her 3rd year as Treasurer. Both these ladies are extremely competent and I thank them for their hard work for this County and I look forward to working with them in my Captaincy.

Maureen Mitchell retires as Junior Secretary after many years and I wish to take this opportunity to thank her for the time and effort she has put into this challenging, but very rewarding post. Thank you Maureen.

Liz Hale, who assisted Maureen with the Juniors has agreed to take over as Junior Secretary and I am sure she will do a fantastic job. She will be assisted by Jinty Rodger from Williamwood who continues on Committee for her 2nd year and by Janette McCartney from Erskine who has, over the years, been involved with Juniors at her home club. Jeanette has been proposed by Liz Hale and seconded by me and is duly elected to committee. Jeanette, for those who may not know you, would you please stand up, thank you.

Freda Tuck has agreed to continue as our Results Secretary and she will now be assisted by Lorraine Morrow from Erskine. Lorraine has been on committee before but business commitments took her away from the area for some time. The Results Secretary is not a Committee position but reports are provided to the committee for each meeting.

Jean Smith retires from Committee this year after 3 years sterling service but I am delighted to report that she has agreed to continue as Membership Secretary, ex officio of the Committee. Like the Results Secretary, she will keep the committee up to date with membership details and reports to the Committee meetings.

Audrey Barclay and June Lockhart also retire from committee on rotation. I thank them for their hard work and commitment to Renfrewshire over the years.

Patricia Davidson, Sheila Robson, Nikki Henderson and Susan Reid all remain on Committee.

Gillian Kyle has agreed to continue as our Child Protection Officer, thank you Gillian. I would also wish to record the thanks of the Association to Elizabeth Simpson who has agreed to continue as our Auditor. Elizabeth has done this task since 1996 and we are indeed indebted to her.

No other nominations for Committee have been received.
We now move onto Item 10 on the Agenda;

Item 10 - Proposed amendments to Constitution.

The proposed amendments really fall into two parts so, if I may, I will first speak to you about the numbers on Committee.

To give you some information on the thinking behind this proposed change, the current Constitution determines that we have 6 Office Bearers and 9 Committee members to manage the running of our County with 5 to form a quorum.

Having 15 women at a committee meeting can often result in lengthy discussion and a bit of ‘going round the houses’ before a decision is arrived at. At our last Committee meeting I asked for consideration to reduce the committee members to six. Again, after lengthy and frank discussions the committee agreed that reducing the committee numbers would not detract from the Aims and Objectives of Renfrewshire Ladies County Golf Association. The running of our competitions and fixtures is an area where (if necessary) I would hope to draw on the knowledge and assistance from host club members who are members of RLCGA. A note of the confirmed fixtures will be available at the end of the meeting.

Any change in Committee numbers necessitates an Amendment to the Constitution which must go to the AGM.

I therefore propose - and this Motion is Seconded by Past Captain Trish;

Article 6 should now read;
The Management of the Association shall be vested in the Committee, which shall consist of the Honorary President, Captain, Vice-Captain, Secretary, Treasurer, Junior Secretary and six elected members. The Immediate Past Captain shall serve ex-officio for one year. (Five shall form a quorum).

Article 8 should now read;
The elected Members of Committee shall hold office for three years. Two shall retire annually by rotation.

There may be a transitional period as the terms of office of the current committee members rotate.

There were no questions from the floor and Articles 6 and 8 were passed unanimously.

As far as Article 11 is concerned, it was felt that there was no formal avenue for a lady golfer to join Renfrewshire unless she was a low handicap golfer. However, it is one of the Objectives of this County to promote friendship and golf at whatever standard so I believe that the amendment to Article 11 allows us to do this but still keep to the current membership criteria.

I propose and Past Captain Trish seconds the Motion that Article 11(iii) should now read;
(iii) A low handicap golfer or a golfer who meets the membership criteria and is new to the area who has expressed an interest in joining the Association may be proposed and seconded by the Captain and President in their years of office.

Lyndsay Mathie queried the wording regarding “low handicap golfer” and Christeen Finlayson clarified that this was to specifically encourage Class 1 golfers to the County. There were no other questions and the Motion was again passed unanimously.

Ladies, can I thank you very much for your support, you have no idea how many hours sleep I lost trying to get that right.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS - there are one or two things I should intimate to you.

1. It has been decided to continue with the practice and training facilities at Playsport. Their Senior Professional, Lesley Mackay, is keen to continue for the forthcoming Winter. In particular, the Juniors have benefited greatly both from Lesley’s vast experience and the facilities at Playsport. When negotiations begin with Playsport, you can be assured that the general membership will not be forgotten. I do appreciate it is probably not the most convenient location but the facilities there do outweigh that.

2. Fixtures. As Jean Irvine told you the West Division Inter-County matches (or the Jamboree as it will be forever called) will be played at Cardross Golf Club 18 -20 June 2012. The Scottish County Finals will be at Montrose Golf Club 21 – 23 September 2012. It would be fantastic if Renfrewshire again represented the West. The standard of golf is very high and there was very little in the West Division and Scottish Finals this year – a little putt here or there makes a huge difference.

3. The Kennedy Salver, which you will know is the Junior equivalent, will be held on Monday 6 August 2012 at West Kilbride Golf Club. Caddies are not required for this event but the girls would love to see the pink of Renfrewshire cheering them on so everyone – everyone - is very welcome.

4. On the topic of Pink I should advise you that pink brollies ordered can be collected this evening, we have a few spare ones – so speak to Nikki Henderson or Susan Reid tonight if you have not already ordered one and would like one, they are £20. Since Past Captain Trish had lost her first one, she suggests we all put our names on our brolly........

5. More dates for you ....... The West of Scotland Championship will be held over Renfrew Golf Club on 6 May 2012. We will be hosting this event and I would urge you to play. It would be great to have another Renfrewshire West of Scotland Champion.

6. Another couple of dates for you. It is hoped the inter county foursomes will be at Hamilton but venue and date have still to be verified by Lanarkshire. The Scottish Championship will be held at Tain 15-19 May 2012 and I look forward to another outstanding performance from Renfrewshire members.

7. We all know that GB&I men hold the Walker Cup, European Professionals hold both the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup and all that remains is the Curtis Cup, the amateur ladies trophy. This match will be held in Scotland at Nairn 8-10 June 2012 and the SLGA are hoping that Scotland can be the scene of the clean sweep of all the Team Championships. At a meeting in Strathmore in September each Scottish County was asked to put forward an ‘Ambassador’ (no less) to liaise with the SLGA to get as many bums on seats and feet on the course to support the GB&I team. I am delighted to report that our Honorary Member and Champion Webmaster Carol Fell has agreed to be our Ambassador. She will be putting all the information on the website. I would also ask you to approach your own club and ask them if they are making any arrangements as a club to go to the Curtis Cup. It promises to be a fantastic event. It could be made even better if members of the GB&I team were to be from Scotland. I am sure Renfrewshire can put at least a few names into the nomination hat for places!! We wish all the top Scottish Lady Amateurs the best of luck and hope there is at least one Scot in the GB&I team. Apparently the supporters will be known as “Tegs Troops” after Tegwyn Matthews the Captain……..enough said about that the better!! Maybe I should create “Maureen’s Marauders”, perhaps not.

To acknowledge Carol’s Ambassadorial involvement for Renfrewshire, can I ask you to come up Carol and accept some Ferrero Rocher chocolates – the kind all Ambassadors enjoy..

AOCB; Lindsay Mathie queried the use of GPS measuring devices and was advised that the committee had discussed it as it had also been discussed at a recent SLGA / Counties meeting. Renfrewshire were continuing with the SLGA mandate of not using them. Maureen did, however, joke that if she got one for Christmas the County may look at that again.

Largs Kelburn hosted the Ayrshire v Renfrewshire Girls Friendly Match this afternoon.    The girls played very well on a day with strong winds, squally showers and wet conditions underfoot making the course play a bit longer, but all credit to the greens staff for the course being playable at all given the amount of rain that we have encountered recently.

Ayrshire managed to win by two matches to one in a greensomes matchplay format but with two games going down to the last putt on the last green it was all very close.   Results are as follows:-

Milngavie were the winners of this years Greenlees Trophy to win it for the third time in a row.

CAROL AND TRACY REACH THE FINAL STAGES OF THE DAILY MAIL FOURSOMES

Congratulations go to Renfrewshire's Carol Whyte and Tracy Masterton (Windyhill) pictured left -- who reached the final stages of the Daily Mail Foursomes competition at Dalmahoy last week.

Unfortunately due to the bad weather the format of the competition had to be changed and the pair did not make it to the final, but it was a great achievement to win through seven rounds to reach the final stages in the first place.

EILIDH ALYSON AND MEGAN ARE 3RD, 4TH AND 5TH IN THE SLGA ORDER OF MERIT AWARDS

Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), who won her first Scottish Ladies’ Championship at Machrihanish in May, has regained the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association’s Order of Merit title.
The primary school teacher had a terrific season. In addition to the National title, she also won the East of Scotland and Fife County Championships and finished third at the Helen Holm Scottish Open Stroke-play Championship at Troon.
She also made her Great Britain and Ireland debut in the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe in Wales in June – and now has her sights set on next year’s Curtis Cup at Nairn.
Kenney, won the SLGA Order of Merit title for a first time in 2009 and, this year, she amassed 2,375 points to finish comfortably ahead of second placed Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle).
Pretswell, who missed several events because of university commitments, still gained 1,800 points in what could be her final amateur season. She has entered the Ladies’ European Tour qualifying school early next year.
Renfrewshire's Eildih Briggs (Kilmacolm),who retained the SLGA’s Girls’ Order of Merit title, finished third on the senior list with 1,647 points. The teenager finished runner-up to Kenney in the Scottish Women’s Championship and made her senior team debut at September’s Home Internationals.
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), who highlighted her season with a record fourth straight win in the Scottish Junior Open Strokeplay Championship, was defending the Order of Merit title but slipped to eighth with 1,053 points.
Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) and Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) were 4th and 5th respectively.

THE 2010 WINTER FOURSOMES CHAMPIONS HAVE A TOUGH MATCH AT OLD RANFURLY

The 2010 Winter Foursomes Winners

Janette McCartney (Erskine) and Carol Fell (Ranfurly Castle) --- the 2010 Winter Foursomes Champions had a tough opening tie in this year's Winter Foursomes at Old Ranfurly today. The match which was meant to have been played last Monday (one of the downpour days!) was luckily able to be played today (Sunday 23rd October) --- 9 holes dry and the remaining holes in the rain.
The opposition Merope Dunlop and Maureen Taggart from the Old Course Ranfurly received 5 shots and they used them well using 4 of of them with winning 3 and halving 1 hole.
However Janette and Carol played very steadily and were 3 up after 9 holes, won the 10th and then Merope hit in a fantastic 9 wood at the long 11th to 3 feet for a birdie 4 to win the hole. Maureen chipped in for a par at the 15th (the green next to the clubhouse) for a half to remain 3 down with 3 to play.
A par 3 at the 16th was enough for Carol and Janette to make it through to the next round.
In the other match of the day Marion Munro and Rosemary Reedie (Ranfurly Castle) beat Patricia Davidson and Sandra Littlejohn (Erskine) at the 19th

Q: A long putter: could you be tempted?
A: I got a long putter about 12 years ago when I started to get the yips and it helped greatly. I rarely see any amateur women golfers with long putters and I am surprised that more of them do not try it.

Q. Does The Presidents Cup interest you?
A. Yes – Enjoy all golf and will still be watching it. Good TV Viewing for a November night. However, I still prefer the Ryder Cup Match.

Q. After another awful year, what next for Tiger?
A. We can only hope that he will return eventually to something like his previous form. However, I see he is now into the “apps” business – perhaps that is his future if he does not improve - Golf instruction on a mobile phone!

Q. Is an eight-month gap between majors too long?
A. Yes --- It’s all over in a flash -- April, June, July and August. However, there are lots of great tournaments in the interim and without changing tradition I think we will have to stick with it.

Q. Which pro caddie would you most want on your bag?
A. Has to be Steve Willams. He has caddied the Peter Thomson, Greg Norman, Tiger Woods and now Adam Scott. Perhaps if he caddied for Carol Fell she might start winning!!

Q. Who is the most over-hyped player in golf?
A. Michelle Wie has played in about 95 LPGA tournaments and has only had 2 wins. She thought she could compete against the men and of course was not good enough. The hype surrounding her is excessive.

The new SLGA Champion of Champions, Eilidh Briggs is unable to take her place in the field, however the eighteen strong field will include reigning Champion, Kate McIntosh, full Ladies' Internationalist, Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin and Girls' Internationalists; Hannah McCook, Lauren Whyte and Clara Young. The sun should have shone on another foursomes tie this morning at Whitecraigs but due to injury the past winning Whitecraigs pairing of Past Captain Christeen Finlayson and Committee Member Sheila Robson (sweater girl!) had to withdraw and Sheila Fergusson (Eastwood) and Julie Will (Ranfurly Castle) now go forward to the second round. Sheila told the opposition she had a pain in the neck but she wasn't referring to Christeen!

Two RLCGA Winter Foursomes ties were played today at Kilmacolm Golf Club and Ranfurly Castle Golf Club.
Heather Anderson and Liz Hale (Caldwell) beat Anne Judge and Iona Stephen (Ranfurly Castle) by 1 up over Ranfurly Castle and the other tie between Mary Hardie and Helen Abram (Ranfurly Castle) against Lois Brown (Kilmacolm) and Carol Anderson (Eastwood) was won on the last green after Mary and Helen who were dormie 4 up and Lois and Carol fought back but didn't quite make it.

EILIDH WINS SLGA GIRLS MERIT TITLE FOR THIRD YEAR IN A ROW

Renfrewshire's Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) has completed a great season and ended her Under-18 years junior golf career in style by winning the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association's Girls' Order of Merit title for the third year in a row.
Runner-up in the Scottish Women's Amateur Championship at Machrihanish the start of the season, Eilidh won the Scottish Girls' Championship at Glenisla Gof Club in July.
She also won the Renfrewshire County and West of Scotland titles and made her Scottish team senior debut at the Home Internationals at Hillside in September.
On Sunday Eilidh won the SLGA Champion of Champions tournament at Glasgow Gailes.
"It has been a great season and making the Home Internationals was a huge goal this year," said Eilidh. "In the foursomes, I had the chance to play alongside my sister (Megan) which was great."
Eilidh has just taken up a golf scholarship at Stirling University, following in the footsteps of Scotland's most successful female golfer, Catriona Matthew.

Eildih won the Order of Merit with 1,941 points and was closely followed by Rachel Walker (Dumfries and County), who finished second with 1,813 points.

Jessica Meek (Carnoustie) was third with 1,683 points and Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) was fourth with 1,550 points and in 5th position was Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin with 1485 point

Eilidh Briggs - The 2011 SLGA Champion of Champions

RLCGA County Champion and West of Scotland Champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) won the SLGA Champion of Champions today at Glasgow Gailes. She had a 75 --- 2 under the CSS to win by one shot.
Eilidh, pictured above, with the winners trophy has had a fantastic season by winning the Scottish Under-18 girls match-play championship at Glenisle and reaching the final of the Scottish women's amateur championship at Machrihanish. She also gained her first full cap, along with sister Megan, at the women's home internationals at Hillside.
Eilidh, with her dad Ian on her bag, matched the women's par of 75 and was two under the CSS for the day.
"I had never even seen the Glasgow Gailes course before," said Eilidh, "so it was a great help to have my dad guiding me round. He had previously caddied for my sister in this tournament so he knew a lot more about how to play Glasgow Gailes than I did."
Susan Jackson (Ladybank), runner-up with a 76, was in much the same boat as Elidh because she too had never seen the course before, let alone played a practice round over it. So she did very well to finish only one over par.
Young Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) was third with a 78, one shot ahead of Scottish women's champion Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), who also qualified as Fife county and East of Scotland champion..
Clara Young (North Berwick), the youngest player ever to win the East Lothian women's county champion was fifth with a 79. A total of 16 players made up the field.

Jinty Rodger and Lesley Forsyth (Williamwood) are the first pairing to play their first round Winter Foursomes Tie. Although it was their home advantage they opted to play Sandra Gilchrist & Jenny Chuwen over Whitecraigs this morning due to Williamwood being on a shortened course. The Junior Championship for 2011 took place today.

Firstly Linsey Stevenson (Whitecraigs and Elie) and Emma Kennedy (Paisley) played their semi-final at Whitecraigs this morning with Linsey just winning on the last green after a nail biting finish. Simultaneously at Ranfurly Castle, Samantha Cowan (Cochrane Castle) played the other semi-final against Alexandra Qayum (Ranfurly Castle) and Alexandra won that tie to put her into the final which was played this afternoon at Old Ranfurly Golf Course.

After pars at the 1st hole Alex made the first move with a beautiful second shot onto the 2nd green to set up a birdie and to go 1 up. Linsey drew even at the 3rd only to lose the next 2 holes after a super sand save by Alex at the 5th. But by this time Linsey was beginning to settle into her game and to get the feel of the greens and she drew back to even after 7 and followed that with a lovely birdie at the 8th going on to win some holes till she was 4 up after 11. A couple of halved holes followed then Alex struck back with a super birdie at the 14th. The match finished at the 16th with Linsey winning 4 and 2.

What a lovely afternoon the girls had and the two semi-finalists caddied for Linsey and Alex. The match was played in a lovely atmosphere with lots of chat and laughter among the girls.

Well done all of them for giving us an exhibition of good golf and we wish them all good luck with their golf in the future...especially Linsey who will play in the SLGA Junior Champion of Champions at the end of October

Renfrewshire's June Irons was runner up in the Patrick Rosebowl Medal Round at the Scottish Vets Jamboree played over the Rosemount Course at Blairgowrie on Monday and was awarded the Smith Medal. Sheilagh Osborne won 4th prize. The Buchannan Cup was also presented to June Irons with Sheilagh Osborne being runner up in that age group.

The Greensomes Competition was played over the Lansdowne Course on Tuesday and Carol Fell who partnered Helen Faulds (D&A) retained the Tony Moffat Memorial Trophy for the best Scratch Score of 78 (3 over the SSS OF 75) and the Beddows Quaich for 1st handicap 78-7-71.

COUNTY JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

The Semi-finals and Final of the Junior Championship are being played on Monday, 26th September.
The first semi-final tie is being played in the morning at Whitecraigs GC between Linsey Stevenson (Whitecraigs) and Emma Kennedy (Paisley).
Alexandra Qayam (Ranfurly Castle) and Samantha Cowan (Cochrane Castle) are playing the other tie at Ranfurly Castle.
The winners are then playing the Final at the Old Course Ranfurly in the afternoon at approximately 2pm.
If you are free on Monday afternoon, please come along and support the girls as I am sure there will be some good golf to be watched.

Midlothian win the 2011 County Finals at Dumfries and Ayrshire just lose out on a count back

Midlothian, title-winners in 2007 but pipped on a countback in 2009 and 2010 for the Scottish women's county championship, finally prevailed on a three-way countback in the closest finish for years to the tournament hosted by Dumfries and County Golf Club.
Midlothian, Ayrshire and Dumfries-shire all finished with two wins and one defeat while Perth and Kinross lost all three of their matches.

RAIN HITS SCOTTISH WOMEN COUNTY GOLF FINALS

Rain halted play on the second day of the Scottish women's county golf championship finals at Dumfries and County Golf Club today (Saturday).
Only the foursomes were completed before the course became too wet. The singles ties will be played on Sunday morning with the final set of matches being decided over six singles each in the afternoon.
Midlothian beat Ayshire 6-3 and Dumfries-shire beat Perth and Kinross 6 1/2 to 2 1/2 on Friday.
Saturday's foursomes results:

Scotland scored an historic "double whammy" over England in the annual schools golf international over the windswept Kilmarnock Barassie links today.
Heedful of the weather forecast that 80mph gales would hit Ayrshire in late afternoon – compared with 20 to 30mph earlier in the day – the organisers scrapped the usual morning foursomes/afternoon singles format and played singles only in a bid to get the youngsters off the course and back in the safety of the clubhouse before the peak of the bad weather.
The Scots won the boys' match 8-4 and the girls' match by an even more emphatic 5-1 margin. Overall, that meant a Scotland 13-5 victory scoreline.
Hugh Hunter, past president of the Scottish Golf Union and an official of the Scottish Schools Golf Association, said:
"I cannot remember when Scotland won both the boys' and girls' matches on the same day. In fact, England have dominated the series in recent years so it is good for the competition that Scotland have become competitive again at schools level.
"Just like the Walker Cup, there's no doubt that the wind was a big factor in the home victory. The Scotland boys and girls showed a lot of spirit in coping with the conditions better than their opponents, in the main."
Hugh Hunter later did some research of the past results and was able to reveal to www.kirkwoodgolf.co.uk that the last win by the Scotland boys in this international was in 2007. The Scotland girls last won in 2005 although they did gain an honourable draw in 2009. The last time both the Scotland boys and girls team won simultaneously was in 1979.

Severe gales and flooding are expected to hit parts of the UK as Hurricane Katia makes its way across the Atlantic.

Winds of up to 80mph are predicted to hit northwest Scotland by Monday, with Northern Ireland, north Wales and northern England also likely to be affected.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for Monday, warning people in Northern Ireland and Scotland to be especially prepared.

It said: "The remains of Hurricane Katia are expected to come across the UK on Monday, bringing a spell of wet and very windy weather.

"There remains some uncertainty about its track and intensity, although Scotland and Northern Ireland are most likely to bear the brunt of the winds.

Due to the likely hood of this bad weather Captain Trish and Results Secretary Freda in conjunction with the Captain of Eastwood Golf Club the decision has been made to call off tomorrow's Medal.
The Committee will look into to possibility of rearranging the Medal for another date. We will keep the members informed of the outcome

ALYSON HALVES HER MATCH AND MEGAN AND EILIDH WIN AGAINST WALES BUT SCOTLAND JUST LOSE

England are Women's Home International champions for the first time since Dunbar Golf Club was the venue in 2007. And captain Chris Pascall's squad finished the job in style with an 8-1 victory over Ireland on a sunny last day at Hillside Golf Club, Lancashire.
England did not win a match at Whitchurch, Cardiff 12 months ago. This time round England won three out of three, having already beaten both Wales and Scotland by 6-3.
Wales finished runners-up with two wins to their credit by beating Scotland, the defending champions, 5-4. It was the Scots' third defeat of the week. Twelve months ago they won three out of three. This time round they finished last.
Scots skipper Fiona Norris reinstated the Briggs sisters, Megan and Eilidh, to the line-up for the final set of singles after leaving them out of two sessions of play.
They responded with two good wins. Megan beat Lucy Gould 4 and 2 while Eilidh was a 5 and 4 winner over Katherine O'Connor.
Wales' Amy Boulden beat international team-mate Pamela Pretswell by 5 and 4 in the lead-off singles. The Welsh player was two up on the Scot after five holes and increased her lead to three after eight and four with a birdie at the 10th
A half in birdie 3s ended the match at the 14th.
Kelsey MacDonald came back from two down after 12 to salvage a square match with Katie Bradbury. Kelsey birdied the 13th, 15th and 17th in her storming finish.
In a match between two teenagers, Scotland's Alyson McKechin halved with Wales' Chloe Williams who was two holes up after five. McKechin birdied the sixth and seventh to square the match.
Williams had regained a two-hole lead by winning three in a row from the 12th but the Scot won the 15th and 17th to gain half a point/
Welsh champion Becky Harries notched up her sixth win in six appearances by beating Scottish champion Louise Kenney 3 and 1 in the final tie to finish.
Harries was three up after five but Kenney got her back to one by winning the sixth with a birdie and the ninth.
Harries pulled away again by winning the 10th and 11th with a birdie. The 12th was halved in birdies and Kenney won the 13th to be two down with five to play. After three halves in a row from the 14th, Harries clinched a 3 and 1 victory by winning the 17th.

36 couples played in to-day's Autumn Greensomes (Stableford) over Renfrew Golf Club.
After Wednesday's extremely heavy rain, conditions were remarkably good being bright and sunny all day. Renfrew is a long course at the best of times but to-day the course was very heavy and wet underfoot. In spite of this there were some very good scores, with the winners being AGNES WILLIAMSON AND JACKIE GRAY (Ranfurly Castle & Gleddoch) with 37 points. Runners-up were MARION MUNRO AND JEAN IRVINE (Ranfurly Castle) with 35 points. In 3rd place was ANNABEL KANE AND RENA SIMPSON (Kilmacolm) with 34 points with a better inward half from ALISON MCGINNIGLE AND JAN MACNAB (Cochrane Castle & Ranfurly Castle).

ALYSON WINS HAS A GREAT SINGLES WIN AGAINST ENGLAND BUT THE SCOTS LOSE

England favourites for title after beating Scotland, Wales beat Ireland

England go into the final day of the Ladies’ Home Internationals at Hillside Golf Club, Lancashire as the only team with a 100 per cent record and favourites to win the title for the first time since Dunbar in 2007.

Scotland, the defending champions, suffered their second defeat of the week when they lost 6-3 to England who took a grip on the outcome by making a 3-0 clean sweep of the morning foursomes. England had come from behind to beat Wales 6-3 on the first day.

They carried the momentum they built up in winning five of their singles on Wednesday into the match against the Scots.
Kelly Tidy extended the England lead to 4-0 by beating Jane Turner 5 and 3. Tidy never looked back after winning the first three holes.and had four birdies in all in a quality performance by the 2010 British champion.

Pamela Pretswell put Scotland’s first point of the day on the board by beating Charlotte Wild 3 and 1 in the lead-off singles.
Pretswell was three up after six holes and was four up after 11 holes.
Holly Clyburn made it 5-1 for England with a 5 and 3 win over international debutante Rebecca Wilson. Clyburn won five holes in a row from the 12th
Bronte Law chalked up a sixth point for Scotland by beating Kelsey MacDonald 2 and 1. Youngster Law was two up at the turn and four up after 11. Then MacDonald rallied to win the 12th with a birdie 3, and also the 13th, 14th and 15th to be all square with three to play.

Law conjured up a birdie 2 at the 16th to halt the Scot’s charge and go one up again. She also won the 17th for a 2 and 1 victory.
Alyson McKechin scored a second point for Scotland by beating Charlotte Ellis by one hole. The Scots teenager made a great start by winning the first two holes but she was pulled back to square after four and had to fight her way back into a two-hole lead with a birdie 3 at the 14th. Ellis won the 15th to be one down going into the closing holes.

McKechin held on to her narrow lead by halving the last two holes, pitching dead for a 5 at the last after her first chip went over the green.
Scottish champion Louise Kenney, fielded as the tail-gunner by skipper Fiona Norris, won the last tie, beating young Georgia Hall 2 and 1 after going three up through eight holes.

So the Scots regained some pride by sharing the singles 3-3 after their blank sheet in the foursomes

Title-holders Scotland's hopes of retaining the Women's Home Internationals title at Hillside Golf Club took a potentially fatal blow on another very windy and latterly very wet day at the Lancashire links.
The Scots led Ireland by 2 points after the morning foursomes but the Irish took the singles by 3 points to finish as 5-4 winners.
Meanwhile, England, trailing 2-1 to Wales after the morning foursomes, won five of the six singles to win the match 6-3.

Scotland looked set for a comfortable start to the defence of the title they won at Whitchurch (Cardiff) 12 months ago when Pamela Pretswell beat Lisa Maguire 5 and 4 to stretch the Scots' lunchtime lead to 3.5 to 0.5.
But it was a false dawn. Scotland did not win another singles tie.
Louise Coffey started the swing Ireland's way when she beat Louise Kenney 4 and 3,
Gillian O'Leary had a very good 3 and 1 win over Kelsey MacDonald and Charlene Reid chalked up a 5 and 4 win over former Scottish champion Megan Briggs.
That left the overall scoreline level at 3.5pt each with two matches to finish.
Ireland's Paula Grant, two down to Monifieth debutante Rebecca Wilson at the turn, fought back to gain a square match by winning the last hole.
And Ireland got the clinching victory point in the last match to finish with Emma O'Driscoll winning the 16th and 17th and halving the last for a come-from-behind one hole victory over Craigielaw's Jane Turner.
England came storming back in the singles against Wales, quickly making up their one-point deficit from the singles, winning five of the six afternoon ties.
A rampant England is bad news for Scotland's second match particularly after the morale blow they must have suffered with their collapse in the singles.

JUNIOR REPORT ON CAMPBELL CLOCK COMPETITIONS, 4TH September 2011.
The Campbell Clock Junior Competitions were played on Sunday in lovely sunny weather.
Thirty seven girls came along to Whitecraigs G C to play in the 3 competitions – 13 played the 6 hole Par 3 course, 13 managed the first 8 holes of the big course and 11 girls competed for the Campbell Clock Trophy over 18 holes.

As well as completing the short Par 3 course the young girls had fun in a putting competition which was won by Alison Macnab from Lochwinnoch GC with Gillian Henderson from Whitecraigs the Runner up. Alison also won the Par 3 competition with Amy Adams from Mearns Castle the Runner Up.

The 8 Hole Competition results are as follows –
Longest Drive at 2nd hole - Bethany Crawford from Erskine GC
Nearest the Pin in 2 at 5th hole -- Jane McCabe from Ranfurly Castle GC
Winner - Connie Dodds from Kilmacolm Runner Up - Bethany Crawford.
The overall winner of the Campbell Clock was Lyndsay McCall from Williamwood with a great score of 46 stableford points. The Runner Up with 38 points was Charlotte McCluskey from Haggs Castle.
The SSS of the course is 72 and the CSS remained at 72.

The County is extremely grateful to Whitecraigs GC for giving us the use of their course on a Sunday afternoon – it is an ideal location for our event and a lovely place to play.
The Junior sub-committee would also like to thank the many helpers who volunteered to walk round with the groups and explain rules and etiquette to the girls. Many thanks also to parents who brought the girls along and got them ready to go out onto the course. Without all of you our competitions would not happen.
The competitions concluded with the Lady Captain of Whitecraigs, Maureen McDevitt presenting the prizes to all the winners.

Gillian Kyle won the The East Renfrewshire ladies Championship yesterday for the 15th time.
However, she is still chasing Ann Prentice's record though!
Congratulations also go to Denise Cowan (pictured right) who won yesterday in the Ranfurly Castle final against Anne Judge. The match was very exciting with it going to the 19th. Denise was absolutely thrilled as this was her very 1st Championship win.

Congratulations go to Renfrewshire Past Captain Jennifer Mack who beat another Past Captain Aileen Wilson in the Haggs Club Championship Aileen played out of her skin and Jennifer was 3 down at the 13th. Jennifer managed to win 13, 14 and 15 and 16 to be 1 up. As Jennifer said -- Aileen is pretty amazing - With new hips, knees etc. She did use a buggy as she cannot get round without one. Nicky Henderson caddied for her and Carole Letters caddied for me.
Jennifer also added I have had a bit of opposition at Haggs! Aileen for many years, Dorothea for as many and then people like Brenda Livingstone, Janice Paterson, Pearl Orr and then last year Nicky Henderson!

Well done to you Jennifer and well done to you Aileen in reaching another final despite all these new hips and knees !

News from Morag Key from Ralston Golf Club -
I feel embarrassed writing this myself since I was the winner. This is my 11th championship win and it was on the 18th green losing to Anne Douglas, our youngest member and reasonably new. She will be the one to watch. I don't know if I can keep going - it gets harder each year. The nerves seem to get worse!!! Still, I feel very lucky in that I've got two new hips and I can still walk the fairways. I feel for Aileen as I'm sure she'd just love to be walking but I think knees seem to be the problem by all accounts. I think the Haggs Final must have been very exciting. Jennifer is amazing - never gives up. Good for her.
Keep giving us all the news Carol. I just love logging into the website every other day and keeping up with all the golf news. Thanks for all your hard work.

Linsey Stevenson (Whitecraigs) played Scotland's Home International Senior Team Captain Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) in the Elie Club Championship and won 5/4. She played excellent golf and started off with 3 birdies!
She got 5 "A"s in her highers and is going to Cardonald College till next summer for 3 days a week giving her extra time to devote to golf.--- Good for Renfrewshire ! --- Well done Linsey.

MARION STEWART WINS THE 2011 COUNTY ROSEBOWL FINAL

The sun was shining and it was warm for the Rosebowl Final at Ralston today between Marion Stewart (Kilmacolm) and Denise Cowan (Ranfurly Castle)

Denise is off 6 and had to give Marion 4 shots in the round.

Marion went 2 up immediately after Denise dropped shots at the first 2 holes then Denise managed to get the score back to all square at the 7th. Then at the 10th hole Marion had the only birdie of the round to go back to 1up and eventually she was dormie on the 16th tee . She won there with a par 5 to clinch the trophy after playing some very steady golf.

Well done to both of them for getting to the final and special thanks to Annabel Kane and Maureen Cook for caddying and to Jackie MacDonald for coming to support.

I also want to mention how impressed we were with the fantastic manners of the gentlemen at Ralston who stood back every time we approached and waved us through!!

County Rosebowl Final 2011

The Rosebowl Final is to be played tomorrow Friday--2nd September at 10am at Ralston.

The finalists are Marion Stewart from Kilmacolm and Denise Cowan form Ranfurly Castle who are both playing very well at the moment. Their handicaps are fairly similar so the final should be very interesting with good golf.

It would be great if some County members can come and watch and support these girls!

Elaine Allison (Stirling) and Dullatur's Jill Meldrum won the SLGA' Scottish women's foursomes tournament at windswept Glenbervie Golf Club today.
They had a gross round of 79 to win by two shots from the St Regulus, St Andrews partnership of former Scottish champion Elaine Moffat and Lauren Whyte who gained the Club Trophy for the leading pair, entered from the same club.

Two couples had 84s - Renfrewshire's Donna Jackson and Liz Stewart (Cochrane Castle) and Jocelyn Mackie (Ladybank) and Royal Dornoch's Cara Gruber. Donna and Liz won third prize with the better last six holes.

ALYSON McKECHIN FINISHES FOURTH IN BELGIUM JUNIOR EVENT

Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin finished fourth in the rain-abbreviated Belgian international junior tournament, scheduled for four rounds but eventually reduced to only 36 holes with stormy weather wiping out two of the rounds and also the practice day at Royal Golf Club de Belgique near Brussels.
The Elderslie teenager had rounds of 73 and 75 for four-over-par 148.
Danish girls Caroline Nistrup (72-70 for 142), Henriette Nielsen (75-71 for 146) finished first and second ahead of Belgium's Margaux Vanmol who won the British girls open amateur title at Gullane earlier this month. She scored 75-72 in this event.
Scottish Under-18 girls champion and Renfrewshire Champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) finished joint 20th on 159 with scores of 78 and 81.
Ireland's Amy Farrell finished joint 26th on 162 with 77-85.
Germany-based Scot Rebecca McGeehan was eliminated with an 80 after a cut to the leading 30 girls was imposed after the first round.

ANOTHER DAY'S PLAY CANCELLED IN BELGIAN JUNIOR WEEK

This year's Belgian Junior International tournament will be decided over - at most - two rounds instead of four.
First Tuesday's practice round was cancelled because an overnight rainstorm had waterlogged the Royal Golf Club de Belgique course. Then a violent Tuesday night storm blew down 40 trees all over the course and play was impossible on Wednesday.
The tournament did start belatedly on Thursday but now today's (Friday) round has been cancelled because of further rain and another "terrible storm" forecast to the area near Brussels at 1pm.

As Alyson and Eilidh said
Alyson : I am so scared --- a huge I mean huge thunder storm here !!!! I've never seen anything like this in my life !!
Eilidh: In Belgium, just me and Alyson!--- and yes we are stuck in another storm This is mental..when is our flight home ?

ALYSON HAS A GREAT START IN THE DELAYED JUNIOR INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT IN BELGIUM

Elderslie's Alyson McKechin was the star Scottish performer on the delayed opening day of the Belgian junior international championship at Royal Golf Club de Belgique near Brussels today (Thursday).

Alyson, who shared the first-round lead in last week's British women's open amateur stroke-play at Royal Ashdown Forest, again showed herself to be a fast starter with a one-over-par 73 which left her in joint second place in the girls' category.
Alyson, now a full-time amateur, is only one shot behind leader Caroline Nistrup (Denmark).
Scottish Under-18 girls champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm), who enrols at Stirling University next month, had a 78 to be joint 16th while Germany-based Rebecca McGeehan had an 80 to be joint 25th.

RAIN IN BELGIUM WIPES OUT PRACTICE ROUND FOR EILIDH AND ALYSON

Hailstones in Brussels -- No Golf Play

Five top young Scots golfers were deprived of a practice round today before the scheduled start tomorrow of the Belgian junior international tournament at Royal Golf Club Belgique near Brussels.
Scottish boys champion David Wilson (Troon Welbeck), Jamie Savage (Cawder), Scottish girls champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm), Rebecca McGeehan (Hummelbachaue) and Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) were left with nothing to do all day as heavy overnight rain flooded the course and led to its closure.

Shortly after their annoucement of this morning another storm reached the course. In 20 minutes the course was totally washed out and more than 40 trees fell down. They then had 30 people from the maintenance team work to remove fallen trees and branches to get the course ready for tomorrow which was an impossible mission.

Therefore they then had to announce that the FIRST ROUND will be CANCELLED. If no other case of major force is met, they hope to be able to play on Thursday.
The 72-hole stroke-play tournament (probably now 54 holes) has individual boys and girls' sections and a mixed team trophy.

Fantastic News and wonderful to have 3 Renfrewshire County Players representing Scotland at the same time and 2 sisters !!
The last sisters to play in the same Scotland team were Fiona and Mhairi McKay in 1993 and 1994. Fiona McKay, married name Norris, will captain the Scotland team at Hillside.
The only other sisters in the past 30 years to play in the same Scotland line-up were Suzanne and Gladys Cadden in 1974 and 1975.

- This competition is an 18 hole foursomes stableford competition. It is open to junior girls (under 18 on 1/1/2011), partnered with a lady or gentleman with a CONGU handicap. There are separate sections for the various handicap categories and pairings with a junior without a CONGU handicap will also have their own section.
- This is a fun competition for girls of all abilities, for example last year we had girls of all abilities competing all the way through from international level to girls without handicaps.

Kingsknowe’s Louise Fraser teamed up with clubmate Allyn Dick, a Scotland international, at comparatively short notice to win the main Scottish mixed foursomes championship at Mortonhall Golf Club today.
Congratulations go to Renfrewshire's Lorraine Morrow (Erskine) who with her partner Martin McLeod (Dullatur) who were 3rd in the handicap section.

At the County Dinner in March this year the winning ticket for a ROUND OF GOLF FOR FOUR at THE CASTLE COURSE, St ANDREWS was won by Anne Terrey from Greenock Golf Club (pictured left with Captain Trish brown)

ALYSON HAS A GREAT LAST DAY AT THE BRITISH AMATEUR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Leona Maguire, one of the talented 16-year-old twins from the Slieve Russell club in Ireland scored another remarkable victory today in the Ladies British open amateur stroke-play championship at Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club, Sussex.
Lanarkshire's Pamela Pretswell made a gallant defence of her 2010 title win. She was in a group of five players including Lanarkshire's Rachael Taylor who finished joint fifth.
Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin from Elderslie who had a a poor 2nd round finished on a high today with a terrific level par 72 last round to finish in the top 20.
