Scottish Senior Championship - Round 1

ALISON BARTLETT LEADS SCOTTISH SENIORS AT HALFWAY
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Royal Dornoch’s Alison Bartlett is the halfway leader in the Scottish senior women’s amateur stroke-play golf championship at Portpatrick Dunskey Golf Club, near Stranraer, today.
Alison, one of the farthest travelled players in the field of 77, shot a two-over-par 73 to lead by two shots from Noreen Fenton (Dunbar) and Lanark’s May Hughes.
Bartlett was four over par after bogeys at the fifth, sixth, short seventh and 12th before finishing strongly with a birdie at the par-4 17th and anotther birdie at the par-5 18th for one-under-par 34 for the inward nine holes.
Fenton was four over par after only four holes, with a double bogey 7 at the long third and bogeys at the second and fifth. Birdies at the ninth and long 11th helped her salvage halves of 39 and 36.
Defending champion Heather Anderson is lying joint fourth on 76. The short holes were costly for the Blairgowrie player – double bogeys at the par-3 seventh and 11th and another shot shead at the short 10th in halves of 39 and 37.
The seniors’ stroke-play event is a championship in itself over 36 holes but the 16 players with the lowest aggregates at the end of two rounds will go forward to conest the Scottish senior match-play championship.

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR SUPPORTERS

On behalf of the team and the committee, I want to say a big thank you to all those who came to pull trolleys and also to watch and support the Renfrewshire team over the last three days at Barassie! You are a great bunch and you had to put up with horrible rain on Tuesday and on Wednesday afternoon. We are only sorry that we did not lift that trophy once more! We were so close, but Ayrshire just pipped us and so they are off to Dumfries in September for the County Finals.
The team played their hearts out and there is no doubt that we were all dissappointed to lose on Tuesday and perhaps that was the reason for a tiny (!) collapse in the foursomes on Wednesday but they came out with all guns firing in the afternoon to win all of the singles very convincingly!
We wish Alex Glennie and her Ayrshire team the best of luck at the Scottish County finals in September at Dumfries and County Golf Club.
AND
We can't wait till next year's Inter County Jamboree at Cardross where we will be fighting to get our hands on that trophy again.!
Thank you everyone and I look forward to seeing you at some of our summer fixtures.
Trish (Captain!)

Your webmaster also apologises for predicting that the WEATHER was going to be fine yesterday afternoon when she went into the METCHEK APP on her phone that said it was not going to rain until 6pm at Barassie --- I think I will just stick to photos as this was totally wrong and the rain poured in the afternoon, the 8th green was practically totally under water and caused a huge hold up in the games.
Well done to Trish, Maureen and the Team on a great performance yesterday afternoon to allow us to be in 2nd position and many congratulations to Ayrshire and their winning team.

Many congratulations also go to Megan who has been awarded an honours law degree by Strathclyde University. She got a 2.1
The graduation is on 8 July but she will not be there and will graduate in absentia . She is in Austria with the Scottish Ladies Team for the European Team Championships.

Final Day at the 2011 WOS County Jamboree and Prizegiving

RENFREWSHIRE LOSE TO AYRSHIRE ON DAY 2 OF THE JAMBOREE

Ayrshire beat last year's Scottish county champions Renfrewshire 5-4 today on Day 2 of the West Division women's inter-county golf team championship at Kilmarnock Barassie.
The weather was absolutely dreadful in the morning  - lashing with rain but clearing up a bit in mid-afternoon.
The Ayrshire v Renfrewshire match was very close with both teams sitting on 4 points with one game to finish - Linzi Allan (Ayrshire) v Gillian McGinlay (Renfrewshire). It was all square going down the 18th.
Linzi put her second in the greenside bunker and Gillian also missed the green with her second. Gillian chipped on and narrowly missed her putt. Linzi got up and down out the bunker to win the game by one hole and the match for Ayrshire 5-4.
Ayrshire had taken a 2-1 lead in the morning foursomes and the singles were shared 3-3. The Briggs girls, Megan and Eilidh, ad a 100 per cent win record through the foursomes and singles but it was not enough to deny Ayrshire victory.
Lanarkshire, who were well beaten by Renfrewshire on Day 1, kept their hopes alive by beating Dunbartonshire 7-2.
Lanarkshire lost the top foursome but won the other two to lead 2-1 going into the singles in which they took five of the six available points.
In the other match, Lanarkshire beat Dunbartonshire and Argyll 7-2.
Going into the final day, Ayrshire have 2pt, Lanarkshire 1, Renfrewshire 1pt and Dunbartonshire and Argyll 0pt. Ayrshire play Lanarkshire in their final match. It should be an exciting finish to see who goes forward to the Scottish county finals in September as West Division champions.

KENNEDY SALVER REPORT

The Inter-County Kennedy Salver matches were played on Monday at Erskine GC. Teams consisted of 6 girls from each of the 4 Counties playing Foursomes in the morning followed by Singles in the afternoon.
The day started off showery and cold, then changed to windy and finished in lovely sunshine. Typical Scottish weather !
Captain Trish welcomed all the games on the first tee as we were the host County. Keeping tabs on the scores was quite a complicated procedure. However Freda Tuck was, as usual, very proficient on the computer keeping all the scores up to date and producing lovely colourful charts for the scoreboard.
Unfortunately, we were narrowly beaten by half a point by Ayrshire who won the Salver. In the Foursomes we won 2 out of our 3 matches and managed to win 3 out of 6 games in the Singles – not too bad a result from our girls.  All the games were played in a very courteous manner and it was great to see so many young girls playing competitive golf in a friendly, sportsman like way.
We were made very welcome by all the staff at Erskine and once again the County wishes to thank the Club for the use of their course for a whole day in the middle of summer.

The Kennedy Salver was played today at Erskine and the Junior girls from Ayrshire, Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire competed in Foursomes and Singles to win the trophy which was being defended by Renfrewshire.
The morning was a little bit damp to begin with but the rain dispersed and our Renfrewshire girls showed great team spirit by winning two out of the three matches. The spectators did feel that it was a bit cold and were delighted to return to the clubhouse for hot soup and sandwiches!
The afternoon was dry with strong winds coming up the Clyde and they had to contend with keeping the ball under control when it was behind and probably at least a two/three club difference when playing into the wind. It was a good test of their golf.

In the end all the scores were very close with Ayrshire winning the Kennedy Salver from Renfrewshire by half a point.

The final scores were Ayrshire 5 1/2 Renfrewshire 5, Dunbartonshire and Argyll 4 Lanarkshire 3 1/2

We all wish to express our thanks to Erskine Golf Club for allowing us the courtesy of the course which was in great condition and also to the club/catering staff for looking after our inner needs.

Very many thanks also to Maureen Mitchell, Liz Hale and Jinty Rodger...our Junior sub committee and especially to Freda Tuck for all her work on the computer.

We now look forward to next week at Barassie when the Senior team will be defending their West of Scotland County Title at the Inter County Jamboree. (More Anon!)

KENNEDY SALVER TEAM ANNOUNCED

During the Spring two Squads of girls received coaching from Lesley McKay at the Playsport Centre in East Kilbride. The girls really enjoy their lessons and already we can see the benefits of the coaching sessions as several girls have reduced their handicaps this season despite the poor weather in recent weeks.
At the moment the girls are preparing for the Annual Inter County Kennedy Salver which is being played on Monday, 13th June at Erskine GC. We are greatly indebted to Erskine members for giving us the courtesy of their course for the whole day on Monday and also for allowing the team to play a practice round over the course.
Our Renfrewshire team consists of –
Linsey Stevenson, Emma Kennedy, Alexandra Qayum, Saorcha Warren, Mairi Gray and Laura Craig.
We face some stiff opposition as the other 3 Counties all have some low handicap players. However, the girls are well prepared and hopefully will successfully defend the Salver which they won last year.

The 18th Green at Bonnyton - Click to enlarge
The June Medal was played over Bonnyton to-day. The early starters encountered terrible weather conditions with extremely heavy intermittant rain, but the later starters were luckier and the day ended in bright afternoon sunshine. A total of 58 played. The SSS was 71 - the CSS was 74 and it was reductions only.
In spite of the bad early conditions, Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) had the best scratch score with an 81.

The overall medal winner was Maureen Cook (Lochwinnoch) who had 87 - 14 - 73. (Pictured below RHS)

The Medal Finals were played in conjunction with the medal and the winner was your webmaster Carol Fell (Ranfurly Castle) -- (pictured left - click to enlarge)  with a 94 - 10 - 84 - which she says "was her worst score this year"

60th Birthday!

Your Webmaster is 60 today!

With rumours of BUS PASSES etc, I did not think we could let this opportunity go without sending greetings from all at RLCGA to CAROL......our Webmaster extraordinaire!

Many, many congratulations Carol from us all and a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY

You have managed to catch several of us out in the past with JibJabs and E-cards so we felt you could not get away without something from us. Unfortunately we could not do it without your help so there are no clever pictures and I am afraid a BLOG is the best we can do as a surprise!

I hope you and Gordon have a lovely time at Lochgreen and I promise I'll send some info about the Inter County Foursomes at Milngavie today so you don't need to worry!

Have a great time and please remember--you are not as young as you used to be!!

With best wishes and love from us all in the COUNTY.

Trish

THANK YOU TRISH FOR YOUR KIND WISHES -- Have just opened my cards and one of them from my brother did make me laugh -- It just sums it up (taken with my iphone) --- make sure your sound is turned on.
