Clare-Marie Carlton had a wonderful short game in the morning to beat Jennifer Mack in the 1st Semi Final. Donna Jackson beat Gillian Kyle in the other Semi Final
Despite afternoon conditions being dreadful with torrential rain both Donna and Clare- Marie played an enthralling match in near par scoring play
The match lasted until the 23rd hole when Donna struck a wayward shot to ruin her chances of gaining her 10th Championship title. Match play Results

April 24th 2003 - In the 1st Round of the Matchplay stages of the County Championship Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) was the star performer of the day. She started out with an eagle 3 at the 1st hole and then continued her outward half in brilliant form to end up being 3 under par at the turn against Jennifer Jenkins (Ralston). Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) leading qualifier continued her good form by beating Heather Anderson (Caldwell) in the 1st Round. In the Quarter Finals, despite being 1 down with 2 to play Jennifer rose to the occasion and managed to beat Lesley Robertson (Ranfurly Castle) at the 18th. |

Heather Anderson (Caldwell) who initially had gross 80 was penalised the maximum of 4 shots by the organizing committee when she discovered that she had carried an extra club in her bag. She still however, managed to scrape in as the last qualifier for the match play stages with a gross 84.
Special mention should be given to the youngest member of the field 13 year old Megan Briggs (Handicap 15 -Ranfurly Castle) who unfortunately carded an 11 at the par 4 - 8th taking 5 to get out of a bunker. She then had an 8 at the par 4 - 11th Recovered well with a birdie 2 at the 16th to end up with a gross 89 only to be 6 away from the last qualifying match play place. This is a name to look out for in the future

Jenna Wilson, 19-year-old Strathaven player, birdied the first extra hole of a play-off against Heather MacRae (Dunblane New) to win the BP Scottish Under-21 girls' open stroke-play golf championship at Kilmacolm today
Defending champion Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan) claimed a new women's course record with a closing round of four-under-par 68. That lifted her up into third place on 218, one shot off the pace.
Kate O'Sullivan (Cochrane Castle) had a very good tournament, playing to scratch in the last round to be tied in 6th place on 225.
Megan Briggs (Ranfurly Castle) was the next Renfrewshire Junior to perform well in the championship with a creditable gross score of 244 - playing to 2 under her handicap in the 2nd round.

Kate O'Sullivan (Cochrane Castle) did well in the opening day of the BP Scottish Under-21 girls' open stroke-play golf championship at Kilmacolm today.
Alison Mitchell (Ranfurly Castle) however, was not so lucky when she slipped down a bank at the fifth hole in the morning round and fell heavily on her left ankle. X-Rays revealed no broken bones but damaged tissues will keep her off any golf course until they heal.

Quarter-finals Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan) beat Gemma Webster (Hilton Park) 3 and 1. Sjavon Wilson (Murcar) beat Sally Kettlewell (Dunblane New) 7 and 5. Kate O'Sullivan (Cochrane Castle) beat Emma Fairnie (Minto) at 19th. Krystle Caithness (St Regulus) beat Laura Murray (Alford) 2 and 1.
Semi-finals Brotherton beat Wilson 3 and 2. Caithness beat O'Sullivan 2 and 1.
Kate, a member of last year's Scottish girls team matched Krystle's steady play and was 1 up after 12 holes.. Krystle squared the match at the 13th, halved the next and then went one up with a par 3 at the 15th. She was then bunkered in two at the long 16th but came out of the sand splendidly and holed a 5ft putt for a birdie 4 to go two up. Krystle then birdied the long 17th to clinch her place in the final.
However, many congratulations to Kate on an outstanding performance and we look forward to her progress as one of the future Renfrewshire County Team Players

She won 5&4 against J Turner (Glencourse) this morning and then beat D Neilson (Hilton Park) 6&5 in the afternoon. Megan Briggs won in the 1st round against K Wells (Dumfries & Co) at the 19th. However, she was unable to progress to the quarter final stages when she was beaten 4&3 by L Murray (Alford)

In parched, fast running conditions at Newmarcher Megan Briggs (Ranfurly Castle) and Kate O'Sullivan (Cochrane Castle) played exceedingly well to be the 11th and 12th qualifiers out of the top 32 for the matchplay stages which begin tomorrow.

RENFREWSHIRE JUNIOR SUCCESS AND SOME STARS FOR THE FUTURE
Ranfurly Castle cleaned up in the 2003 Scottish Girls Under 14 Championship held at Helensburgh today. 38 handicap Lauren Mackin won the tournament with 47 stableford points and her club-mate Megan Briggs (13 Handicap) was not far behind on 44 points. No doubt their handicaps will come tumbling down !
Carly Booth (Comrie) Britain's youngest club champion won the under 12 section with 36 points with E Briggs from Ranfurly Castle being 3rd with 34 points
Thursday 3rd July 2003:
Carol Whyte and Maureen Skinner were the star performers at the July County Medal played over Gourock today. Carol was the overall winner with a scratch 76 net 71 and Maureen had a 78 net 73. Both were excellent scores and with the SSS 73 going up to a CSS 75 they have both reduced their Handicaps to 4.6 and 4.8 respectively.
On asking Carol how her golf has been going, she said that she has reduced her handicap from 5.8 to 4.6 since the beginning of June and this has been due to the help of Karyn Burns.

Dawn Bell (Whitecraigs) won against Alison Mitchell (Ranfurly Castle) 3and 2
Megan Briggs (Ranfurly Castle) won against Gillian Mullen ( Paisley) 1 hole
FINAL (Played in the afternoon)
It was a very close contest in the afternoon final between Dawn and Megan with a better ball of level par 37 on the outward nine. 14 year old Megan was one up going to the 12th and then 17 year old Dawn had a brilliant run of 3 pars. She then birdied the difficult Old Ranfurly 15th to go 2 up. Megan hung on by slotting a long putt on the 16th for her par to half the hole and finally a half in 5 at the 17th was enough for Dawn to win the final by 2 and 1
Beth Paterson (Junior Secretary) refereed the final. Alison caddied for Dawn, Gillian for Megan. Support for the girls was also there from the walking wounded County Champion Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze) and Linzi Graham (Ralston).
Marilyn Muir captain of Old Ranfurly presented the prizes.
Wednesday 27th August 2003:
The County Rosebowl Handicap Final was played today at Old Ranfurly Golf Course between Merope Dunlop and Moira Hogg. In an excellent final Moira was up against a very much on form Merope who chipped in for a birdie 3 at the 3rd and very rarely made any mistakes. She was out in approximately 39 gross and was 4 up at the turn.
Moira staged a good fightback from the 9th onwards. Merope, however, sank a very difficult putt on the 12th to win the hole and then had a par 3 at the 13th. With a half at the 14th Merope clinched the match 5 and 4. Aileen Wilson (Vice Captain) refereed the final

HEATHER ANDERSON (RLCGA) IN WINNING CALDWELL CENTENARY PRO-AM
Heather Anderson, helped the host club's women's team to win the Caldwell Golf Club Centenary Invitational pro-am yesterday (Friday).
Heather, a member of Caldwell all her life and still playing off a handicap of five, teamed up with Christine Wilson (handicap 10) and Liz McPherson (15) to partner Fereneze professional Haldane Lee to a net team score of 19-under-par 123.

I have just heard that Megan Briggs [Ranfurly Castle] won the Medal round played over the Strathtyrum Course on the Thursday 7th August with a gross 72.She won the prize for the best Scratch Score and the second Handicap prize. On the Friday she won the Stableford Competition played over the Jubilee Course [on count back] with a total of 37 points.

Jannette McCartney (Erskine) and Sheila Shaw (Lochwinnoch) --- were the only 2 players to break the CSS of 75 over Lochwinnoch where the SSS is 72.
Janette had a gross 82 net 71 in the scratch to 12 Division and also had the best gross score of the day. Sheila (pictured right) off a handicap of 14 had a net 73 and won the over 13 handicap division.

I have just received a wee message from Gladys Speedie who is running the August Medal at Lochwinnoch on Monday
Just got in last night from St Andrews
Unfortunately the har came down on Tuesday when I was due to play the Eden. Had a horrible hole at the 17th on the New on Monday so spoiled my chances as the match play was judged on the one round. Tough as it played, I had a bounce game the next day and played to a 7. Just not my luck this year again.
Never mind Gladys it's the taking part that's important and remember you need to have a sense of humour to play this game !!!

HEATHER ANDERSON CAPTAINS THE SCOTS TO WIN TITLE AT LILLESHALL HALL
Scotland defended the Miller Stirling Trophy they won at Seaton Carew 12 months ago when the Veteran Ladies Golf Association jamboree was played at Lilleshall Hall, Shropshire this week. The team was captained this year by former Scottish champion Heather Anderson (Caldwell) and Renfrewshire County Committee member
Scotland's squad for the three-day programme was: Rose Anderson (Huntly), Helen Faulds (Douglas Park), Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh), Pat Hutton (Lanark), Christine McAndrew (Nairn Dunbar), Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay), Moira Thomson (North Berwick), Pam Williamson (Baberton).
They won 5 1/2 - 3 1/2 against North on Tuesday, then won against Midlands yesterday by 6 1/2 - 2 1/2 and then lost by 5 1/2 to 3 1/2 against the South today.
Scotland and South both finished with two wins apiece at the top of the table. The tie-breaker was a count back of games won and Scotland prevailed by the slender margin of 1pt.
Final placing _ 1 Scotland (after count back) 2pt, 2 South 2pt, 3 Midlands 1pt, North 1pt

LYNDA BRABENDER SHARES TOP SPOT
COMPETITORS in the first qualifying round of the Strathtyrum women's five-day open tournament, organised by St Andrews Links Trust, found the going tough over the New and Eden Courses. No player broke 80 over the New Course which has a women's par of 75 and nobody got within striking distance of the Par of 73 at the Eden Course. The qualifying stages were reduced to one round due to fog !!

SCOTTISH MIXED FOURSOMES AT LANARK GOLF CLUB
KIRKCUDBRIGHT golfing brother and sister Ben and Addi Shamash (Bonnyton and RLCGA) won the Scottish open mixed foursomes title at Lanark Golf Club today.
Three pairings headed the leaderboard with scores of 77. Ben, a former Scottish schoolboy champion, and Addi, winner of the Irish junior women's open title earlier this season, won the card countback with a better inward half than the home club duo, another brother-and-sister combination of Grant and Elaine Cuthill.
The Cuthills edged Greg Mackie and Jocelyn Carthew (Ladybank) into third place with a better last six-hole score.
It was close too in the handicap section with two pairings returning net 73s ahead of another two couples with net 73 1/2s.
Robert Kerr and Janette McCartney of Erskine's better inward half landed them first place ahead of John and Alison Stevenson (St Regulus).

On the 11th June in the Club News June archives you will see that I wrote a short article about my adopted "MUM" former RLCGA member 87 year old Janet Gillies who was in hospital having an operation on her leg.
On visiting her in hospital she asked me if I would like to play in the Invitation Day at Troon on the 12th September. I said I would be delighted to be her guest. However, at the time I really did not think that she would be able to manage 18 holes of golf again.

Just back from Ballater and Cruden Bay.
We had a great few days, weather wonderful, some scores good, Heather won the Over 60 section, a Scottish Team was selected for the inaugural Senior's Home Internationals with Jennifer Mack as the Captain. Heather was the best from Renfrewshire and Elspeth Hanlon had a 76 off a 7 H/Cap in the second round. The rest of us had a good time.

Jennifer Graham from Haggs Castle (pictured right ) won the Autumn Meeting today at Williamwood Golf Club with a net 67.
Runner up to Jennifer in the Handicap Scratch to 12 Division was Eastwood pair Ruth Henderson (BIH) from Beth Paterson both with a net 70

RENFREWSHIRE GIRLS STABLEFORD FOR THE CAMPBELL CLOCK (PLAYED OVER WHITECRAIGS GOLF CLUB) --- EILIDH BRIGGS (RANFURLY CASTLE) IS THE WINNER.
At Whitecraigs Golf Club today 22 girls took part in the Stableford competition run by Beth Paterson the Junior Secretary. The Competition has been held annually since 1998 at Whitecraigs Golf Club and was initiated by the late Leslie Campbell
Eilidh Briggs from Ranfurly Castle (pictured right) off a handicap of 44 won the Campbell Clock Trophy with 48 points

MAUREEN SKINNER IS COWGLEN WINNER
Maureen Skinner (Gourock) and Joyce Mitchell (Whitecraigs) both had a net 70 in today's County Medal played at Cowglen. Maureen was the overall Medal Winner of the day by virtue of the better inward half and she also had the best scratch with a gross 75
Runner up to Maureen in the Handicap Scratch to 12 Division was Beth Paterson then Nancy Cowan both with a net 71
Joyce won the over 13 handicap division with Anna Brawley and Margaret McGowan both from Cowglen being in second and third place both with a net 71
Thursday 23rd October: Cochrane Castle are presented with the West of Scotland Greenlees Trophy
Over 60 ladies representing 28 clubs attended the West of Scotland Greenlees Trophy Presentation Lunch at Largs Golf Club today. Cochrane Castle winners of the 1st Division for the first time were represented by RLCGA Captain Pearl Orr, county team player and captain of Cochrane Castle Gillian McGinlay plus 8 other Cochrane Castle team members. Unable to attend were RLCGA team members Donna Jackson, Carol Whyte and Maureen Skinner
Denise Cowan (Greenlees Captain) accepted the large trophy from Sandra Nordbe the Largs Lady Captain
The league was first established in 1931 by Isabel Greenlees. She was a member of Prestwick St Nicholas before joining Troon Ladies where the 50th Anniversary was held and where she presented the trophies. We are all grateful to her for establishing the league and for giving us such pleasure in playing inter club matches through the years
Willeen McCallum (Whitecraigs) the Greenlees Divisional Secretary chaired the presentation lunch. She congratulated all the winners and also announced her retirement from the post by saying that it seemed appropriate that she should retire this year when so many new names have appeared on the trophies. Jean Donaldson Life Member of Largs gave a very enlightening talk on the history of Largs and Sandra Nordbe, Captain of Largs presented the trophies
Nancy Chisholm, Prestwick St Nicholas, Winners of Division 2 gave the vote of thanks and also announced that there will be a Renfrewshire Seminar on the Unified Handicapping System at Caldwell Golf Club on the 20th November. Details are currently being sent out to clubs.

JUNIOR MASTERS TITLES BOTH GO TO NORTH-EAST
Megan Briggs (Ranfurly Castle) was 5th in the Girls Grand Final of the Scotland Junior Masters played over the Queen's Course, Gleneagles Hotel today (Sunday).
From a starting field of 2,500 from all over Scotland (both boys and girls) a total of 80 qualifiers played on the day.
The top of the girls' Leaderboard was Michelle Thomson (McDonald Ellon) Carly Booth (Auchterarder) and Nicole Blackie (Eyemouth) all finishing with 37pt. .
Nadia Green (Nairn) was fourth with 36pt and Megan Briggs (Ranfurly Castle) fifth of those who had 34pt.
The first five in both the boys' and girls' sections will each receive a bonus prize of specialised coaching.
The tournament is run jointly by the Scottish Golf Union and the Scottish Ladies
Wednesday 26th November: SLGA AGM
213 ladies attended the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association's AGM at the Station Hotel in Perth today. Mrs Nancy Chisholm was elected as President of the Association.
One of the main points of the meeting was to approve or reject the Resolution proposed by the LGU Executive Council to amend the Rules of the Ladies' Golf Union to reflect the change from the LGU Handicapping System to the CONGU Unified Handicapping System subject to approval at the LGU AGM on Wednesday 21 January 2004.
Nancy Duncan reported on behalf of the LGU on the reasons for change and various ladies from the audience were able to raise points in favour or against the resolution.
A 2/3 majority was required for the Resolution to be passed. A representative from each club or county then voted for or against
Final Count : 133 + 63 proxy (196) were for and 15 + 6 proxy (21) were against the proposal
Since 90.3% of Clubs in Scotland voted in favour the resolution was passed.

Wednesday 19th November: Meeting for Handicap Secretaries in Renfrewshire at Caldwell Golf Club
All clubs in Renfrewshire were represented at a meeting to hear more details of the CONGU system that is proposed to be introduced in February 2004. Nancy Chisholm from the SLGAwith her "handicap hat on" as the West of Scotland no longer has a Handicap Advisor, reported exceedingly well on the many decisions that have been made. She also gave some advice for the handicap secretaries and their committees. However, the CONGU system is still to be ratified in Scotland at the SLGA AGM in Perth on Wednesday 26th November. All members are welcome to attend. Details of the last evenings meeting will be taken back to their own club committee and members in due course.
Carol Fell then reported on the RLCGA plans for next year in how the County hope to return all AWAY scores to HOME Clubs:
Last season we had a trial run using Club Systems 2000 Software to input our competition scores and calculate the CSS. Since then RLCGA are now the owners of Club System 2000 software which is free to County Associations with an annual Software Support Fee.
The AWAY score and CSS of the competition is normally returned to the entrants Home Club as soon as possible after the County Medal by printing out details and posting them back to your handicap secretary.
This year we published the competition results onto the Renfrewshire County Website. Next year, however, we will be publishing the result of each competition onto a Renfrewshire page within thewww.howdidido.co.uk which we are now registered to. As you will see you are still be able to access your results after a competition through this Renfrewshire Website link. Another window will open and when you have looked around close that window and you will be back to this page. (Please allow time for the Howdidido page to load for the 1st time -- it will be quicker the next time you open)
When the result of a competition is published, your score, the CSS of the competition and your Rule 19.8 Stableford adjustment score will be sent back, directly back to your HOME Club. If your club is on the same software (i.e. Club Systems 2000) and you are linked and registered to the howdidido website an internal message will be returned onto your Match computer in the PUBLISH section of the software.
Obviously there are many clubs that do not use the same software. Club Systems 2000 have collected about 800 e-mail addresses from golf clubs in the UK and have put them into their system, so when you process a score it will try and link each player with a ‘known club’ on their server’s database.
If a known club link is created the score will be e-mailed to that club. This has several benefits and ensures that clubs get to know about away scores.
Where clubs are signed up to “howdidido” they get an internal message back to highlight the details of away scores. This is generally more secure than e-mail and also gives them the opportunity to automatically process the score directly into players handicap record in the club2000 system in the future.
There are about 400 clubs signed up to howdidido website, with about 800 other clubs who have recorded e-mail addresses.
We have about 229 playing members in the County and had about 170 players (i.e. 170 AWAY Players ) that played in competitions this year and who are attached to approx 30 different clubs.
At the moment there are about 13 of these clubs where results can be returned to either by email or by the howdidido internal message system
Over the winter period I hope to get more email addresses from all the clubs that do not use Club Systems 2000 or have a stand alone computer , I would appreciate as much help from you all to achieve our objective which in the long term will be of benefit to you and your handicap secretary.

Wednesday 5th November 2003 : AGM held at Haggs Castle Golf Club
The AGM was held today at Haggs Castle Golf Club. The meeting went very well with all this years events, results, Junior Section, and County Players achievements, reported to the well attended AGM audience.
Aileen Wilson took over from Pearl Orr as Captain and Beth Paterson (Eastwood) was appointed as the new Vice Captain. Beth, however, has agreed to remain as Junior Secretary next year to enable some follow up and continuity to all her wonderful efforts this year.

Christeen Finlayson and Audrey Sturgess have done a wonderful job this year and have agreed to stay on as Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
A new appointment has also been made -- Carol Fell will be the Match / Handicap Secretary for the County next Year.
The new members that have been appointed to the Committee are: Brenda Livingstone (East Renfrewshire), Ann Robinson (Ranfurly Castle) and Maureen Mitchell (Cathcart Castle)
Thanks were given to the retiring committee members : Janette McCartney (Erskine), Ruth Henderson (Eastwood) and Rhona Graham (Haggs Castle) for all their help over their last 3 years in office
Sheila Goudie (Cowglen) - Past RLCGA Captain who is in charge of Course Rating in Renfrewshire gave us an in depth account of where we are going !
Jennifer Mack (West Division SLGA Representative) enlightened the audience on some of the CONGU details that we currently need to know for next year.
Finally Carol Fell gave details on the RLCGA purchase of Handicapping Club System 2000 software that will enable us to publish the results and transfer AWAY details back to the players HOME Clubs.
To conclude the AGM the presentation of prizes took place.
