RENFREWSHIRE GIRLS ENJOY THEIR MATCH AGAINST AYRSHIRE GIRLS

L- R - Romy Erskine, Alison Macnab, Zara Thomson,
Sophie Kyle, Caitlin Caulfiled, Niamh Kinney
On Saturday 29th April, 6 girls headed for Skermorlie Golf Club to represent Renfrewshire in a 'friendly' match against Ayrshire.

The team was :
Niamh Kinney (Erskine)
Alison Macnab (Ranfurly Castle)
Romy Erskine (Kilmacolm)
Sophie Kyle (East Renfrewshire)
Caitlin Caulfield (Whitecraigs)
Zara Thomson (Williamwood)

Ayrshire and  Renfrewshire Girls
Unfortunately the result was not friendly as all girls were beaten apart from Niamh who earned a well fought half! They found the course tight and conditions tricky, but with some practice over the coming season, we shall look forward to a return match in the autumn.

Our thanks go to June Kerr, Ayrshire Junior Convevor for organising the match and the tea in the Station Cafe afterwards.

Thanks go to Captain Gillian Kyle for the photographs and report

Championship

The first of the Championship semi-finals was between defending champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and Denise Cowan (Ranfurly Castle).
Denise was 1 up on the turn but Eildih fought back on the back nine to win 2&1.
Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) and Liz Stewart (Greenburn) contested the other semi-final - this was a very close game with Gillian running out eventual winner on the 17th by 3&1.

A fairly large number of Renfrewshire County ladies turned out to support the two finalists - Eilidh Briggs and Gillian Kyle
This too was a close game with some superb golf being played by both players. However with Eilidh having 5 birdies and Gillian just missing a couple of putts Eilidh finished off the match at the 15th.

Lesley Anderson and Linda Anderson

The final of this competition was between Lesley Anderson (Caldwell), playing in her first County competition and Linda Anderson (Erskine) - pictured above

Vice Captain June Lockhart refereed this match and said --

Lesley Anderson (Caldwell) and Linda Anderson (Erskine) arrived on Wednesday just to play a round of golf at Pollok GC. Two days later they were contesting the final of the Handicap Championship for the Irvine Trophy, and they both enjoyed the experience.
Lesley was giving Linda 3 strokes and although playing off 22 after just 2 full seasons in golf, Lesley hit such a strong ball that her highlight was taking on the meander of the River White Cart and achieving an easy par 4 at the 14th. However Linda’s very consistent play and greater experience in course management saw her achieve a 4 & 3 win in a game played in a most friendly, sporting manner.

RLCGA would like to thank Pollok Golf Club for their hospitality and warm welcome to all the ladies who played over the three days.
Also many thanks go to Alistair Dobbie - Pollok Captain who presented the prizes.

The prizewinners were:

Peggy Clark Trophy - Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) - gross 69 + 3 = 72 net (bih)

2nd Net - Anne Judge (Ranfurly Castle) - gross 82 - 10 = 72 net

RENFREWSHIRE CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST ROUND TIES

Conditions were not quite as bad as yesterday’s qualifier in this mornings match play ties, but still very cold and windy.

Game 1
Eilidh Briggs v Elaine Robb
Eilidh won over Elaine by 8 and 7.

Elaine played steady golf but Eilidh birdied the 3rd, 7th and 9th. With the exception of the 8th Eilidh parred the remaining holes during their match.

Game 2
Shirley Back v Carol McNally
Shirley beat Carol 4 and 3.

Both played some mixed golf and although Carol put up a good fight, Shirley dug-in and eventually manage to win.

Game 3
Julie Wilson v Elizabeth Hale
Julie beat Liz 5 and 4.

The front nine was pretty close with Julie being two up on the turn. Both missed scoring opportunities on the back nine with Liz losing out in the end.

Game 4
Fiona Cameron v Denise Cowan
Denise beat Fiona by 2.

This was Fiona’s first time in the knock-out stages and although a closely contested match Denise ran out winner in the end.

Game 5
Gillian Kyle v Marion Stewart
Gillian beat Marion 6 and 5.

Both played steady on the way out with Gillian being one up after eight. However, Gillian’s length proved too strong for Marion on the back nine.

Game 6
Carol Whyte v Donna Jackson
Donna beat Carol 7and 6.

Carol played steady but Donna’s parr golf for the front nine was enough to win the match.

Game 7
Alyson McGinnigle v Anne Judge
Alyson beat Anne 4 and 3.

Game 8

Sara McCorkell v Liz Stewart
Liz beat Sara 2 and 1.
This was probably the closest game in this round. Sara was 3 up at one point but Liz pulled it back to all square at the 15th and then won the next two holes to win the match.
