Golf to stay a sport not a job for happy amateur Megan Briggs
FROM THE SCOTSMAN WEBSITE
By Martin Dempster
Hallelujah! So there are still people out there who are actually content to play top-level amateur golf and enjoy trips around the world as part of Scotland sides instead of turning professional and, in some cases, completely wasting their time.
That may sound harsh, but the truth often hurts and you just have to take a look at the fields on circuits like the PGA EuroPro Tour, the Alps Tour and the EPD Tour to see names that were written in the stars as amateurs yet these days are struggling to make any sort of impact in the paid game.
The introduction of such tours may have provided more playing opportunities for aspiring Tour professionals but, at the same time, it has created a situation where there is a ridiculous amount of these individuals, many of whom would have been better off staying in the amateur game.
True, amateur golf in 2010 is a lot different than it was in the days of Charlie Green, Ian Hutcheon, George Macgregor and Belle Robertson, but it's certainly worth looking at people like them to illustrate that golfing careers can be fulfilled without necessarily having to turn professional.
Green, for instance, travelled the world representing both Scotland and Great Britain & Ireland, playing in five Walker Cups, two Eisenhower Trophies, eight European Team Championships and 19 Home Internationals. Robertson, too, could have clocked up her fair share of air miles as a Curtis Cup player alone, having played in that fixture seven times and been the non-playing captain on two other occasions.
But in recent times, it has simply not been fashionable to be a Charlie Green or Belle Robertson. The closest we've seen probably are Glenn Campbell, a Blairgowrie greenkeeper who has been part of the Scotland set-up for the past seven years, and three-time Scottish champion Anne Laing – though her Curtis Cup career involved an unglamorous trip down the M6 to Formby.
She did, however, play against an American side that contained both Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer – now two of the leading lights on the LPGA Tour – and that sort of opportunity is exactly why the amateurs of today shouldn't be so hasty to move on to the next stage without giving themselves a proper chance to fulfil that particular phase of their career.
Nigel Edwards, the current Walker Cup captain, is a fine example of someone who has had his share of thrills from playing amateur golf, the little Welshman having been a team-mate of Luke Donald, Nick Dougherty, Graeme McDowell, Marc Warren and Oliver Wilson, as well as coming up against the likes of Anthony Kim and Ryan Moore in his four playing appearances against the Americans. It was so refreshing, therefore, to listen to Megan Briggs, the defending champion, talk about her future plans during the Scottish Ladies' (Close) Amateur Championship at Craigielaw.
Briggs is studying law at Strathclyde University and will only be 21 by the time she finishes her degree. With that behind her, the Kilmacolm player will have some welcome security but, even then, it sounds unlikely that she'll be tempted to join that band of aspiring Tour professionals.
"Making it on Tour is so hard unless you are making money week in, week out," she said. "Whenever I go on a website to check on results, it is evident that the prize-money drops down so rapidly. I'm quite happy for golf to remain my hobby – I don't want to find myself in a position where it's my job and I'm starting to resent it because of that.
"Anyway, what's wrong with staying as an amateur? I know from personal experience that you get to travel to loads of places while playing in top-level tournaments at the same time."
Nairn Dunbar's Kelsey MacDonald, who succeeded Briggs as Scottish champion at the weekend, will almost certainly end up in the professional game but she too, talked about wanting to make sure she is "ready" before making that leap.
Far too many, especially in the men's game, are nowhere near ready when they're making that leap and, in doing so, leave behind what could be a fulfilling career in the amateur game.

EILIDH BRIGGS EQUALS THE COURSE RECORD OVER KILMACOLM

Eilidh Briggs (pictured left)who was unable to play in the Scottish Championships this week because of exams was able to play in yesterday's Club Medal over Kilmacolm last night. She had a GROSS 67 --- 5 under the SSS WHICH EQUALS THE COURSE RECORD HELD BY HER SISTER MEGAN AND REDUCES HER HANDICAP TO SCRATCH --- THE SAME AS MEGAN !!!!
WELL DONE EILIDH

PLUS WELL DONE TO MEGAN AND CLARE-MARIE FOR THEIR GREAT PLAY AT THE SCOTTISH.

CLARE - MARIE IS DENIED A PLACE IN THE FINAL BY LOUISE KENNEY IN MARATHON MATCH

Louise Kenney and Clare- Marie Carlton (Courtesy of Calcarson Agency)

Renfrewshire's Clare-Marie Carlton did not have the best of starts in this afternoon's Semi Final against Louise Kenney this afternoon when she bogeyed the first two holes to be 2 down after 2 holes. Clare- Marie then settled down with a birdie 4 at the long fourth to cut her deficit to one but bogeyed the fifth to lose that before Kenney bogeyed the short sixth to come out of that exchange of holes with a one-hole advantage.
The next four holes were halved in strict par, Clare- Marie turning in one-over 36 to Louise Kenney's 35.
Louise broke the stalemate with her first birdie of the round, a 4 at the long 11th to go two up. The Fifer got her second birdie at the 12th to go three holes up but that stirred Clare- Marie into a birdie-birdie revival, winning both the 13th and 14th to be only one down on the 15th tee.
The 15th was halved in pars, leaving Louise one up with three to play. Clare- Marie then had a birdie at the 16th - to go all square - and a winning par at the short 17th - to go one up for the first time in the match.
However, she was forced to concede the 18th to be back to level pegging again ... and off into extra holes.
The 19th was halved in bogey 5s, Clare- Marie three-putting after Kenney had been bunkered.
The 20th was halved in birdie 4s, both players now level par for the 20 holes.
The short 21st saw Clare- Marie bunkered off the tee, splash out and hole a chip for a par 3 which Kenney matched by holing from 10ft
On to the 22nd (the par-5 fourth) Louise clinched a place in the final with a par 5

CLARE - MARIE REACHES THE SEMI FINALS AND MEGAN IS JUST PIPPED

Top seed Martine Pow, the 45-year-old 2006 champion from Selkirk, had her glory run ended by Renfrewshire's Clare-Marie Carlton from Fereneze.
Clare- Marie was only one up at the turn but, on another warm, almost humid morning, she pulled away from her older opponent on the inward half.
She went two up when Pow three-putted the 11th and then increased her lead to three with a pitch-and-putt birdie 4 at the long 12th.
Pow’s birdie at the 14th was a last gallant bid to turn back the years. But, back to two down, the leading qualifier could make no further inroads and lost the 17th for Clare- Marie to be the first to reach the semi-finals – for the first time – by a 3 and 1 margin with roughly level par golf.
Now Clare-Marie now plays 27-year-old Dunfermline nursery teacher Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) for a place in the final.
Louise Kenney got a measure of revenge over Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) for last year’s 4 and 3 defeat in the final at Southerness by beating the her by one hole.
Megan was two up after six holes but Kenney finished the stronger. She had an eagle 3 at the 11th and birdies at the 12th and 13th to win all three holes, transforming a one-down position to a much healthier one-hole lead. Megan then squared the contest at the short 17th where Louise took a bogey but the Fifer birdied the par-5 18th for a one-hole victory.

Today’s results:

Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze) beat Martine Pow (Selkirk) 3 and 1.
Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) beat Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) 1 hole.

MEGAN AND CLARE- MARIE ARE THROUGH TO THE QUARTER FINALS OF THE SCOTTISH

Renfrewshire's Megan and Clare Marie have both won through to the quarter final stages if the 2010 Scottish Chamionships.
In the morning, however, top seed Martine Pow from Selkirk beat the "leading qualifier curse" but only just in the first match-play round of the Scottish women's amateur championship at sunny but slightly windy Craigielaw links this morning.
Martine, two holes up for most of the first 10 holes, eventually scraped through at the 19th against Renfrewshire's, youngest talented player Alyson McKechin, last of the 32 qualifiers, from Elderslie.
"There's definitely a curse on leading qualifiers in this championship. Can you remember the last time the No 1 seed went on to win the title?" asked 45 year old Martine who qualified in the No 4 position when she was crowned champion by beating Anne Laing in the 2006 national final at Dunbar.
Pow unleashed a phenomenal drive on to the green, slightly downwind at the first extra hole, a drive of close on 300 yards and a two-putt birdie 3 gave her a hard-earned win over her 16-year-old opponent.
Alyson led for the only time in the match when she won the third and the fourth with a birdie to cancell out Martine's first-hole success.
Pow hit back with three wins in a row - the fifth, sixth and seventh, to go two up but lost the nith to a birdie to be brought back to one up at the turn.
The Selkirk health and safety officer retained a two-hole lead with a par 3 at the 10th but lost the long 11th to a par 5 and the 13th to a par 4 to be pulled back to square.
Martine birdied the 16th to get her nose in front again but Alyson birdied the last to take an absorbing contest down the 19th.
WELL DONE ALYSON -- YOU NEARLY DID IT

Megan Briggs produced the birdies in the morning round when she had to take the measure of Jacqueline Sneddon who is home for the summer holidays from Grand Canyon University, Arizona. She then went on to win by 4 and 5 against Rachael Taylorand now play Dunfermline nursery teacher Louise Kenney in a replay of last year’s final tonorrow morning in one sense although both say that last year’s result, when Megan won the title with a 4 and 3 victory, has no bearing at all on who will be the winner this time round. --- Good Luck Megan you can do it.

Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze), the No 24 qualifier, ousted the No 9 seed and former Scotland cap, Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder) by two holes and now meets Martine Pow the victor over Alyson after a ding-dong struggle in the 2nd round with Susan Woods (Drumpellier) who she beat by by two holes, the only time either player was ever more than one up.---- Well done Clare-Marie -- you can do it too !!

Congratulations also go to Natasha Qayum who played well in her tie in the Clark Rosebowl this morning and was only beaten by 2 and 1
