CAPTAIN JUNE DEFENDS COUNTY GOLF REMARK IN GLASGOW HERALD NEWSPAPER

In yesterday's Glasgow Herald many County Members may have read the article about the Golfing Fixtures for 2018 including the new 9 Hole National Final. --- She emailed them saying -

In usual fashion for many sports articles (Nick Rodger, 20th Dec – Scottish Golf), the first two paragraphs attempt to be amusing.

However in describing Scottish Golf’s unveiling of its 2018 schedule of events by saying “nothing gets you into the Christmas spirit quite like opening an email to see when the Scottish Women’s County Finals are on” was both patronising and offensive.

Scottish Golf certainly has its problems at the moment, and I get the sentiment of the article (eg. Ready Golf and 9 hole competitions to improve the game), but to include a flippant comment on the Women’s County Finals was both patronising and offensive.

Most amateur championship competitors require time off work, so it is vital dates are listed well in advance. Having been involved in the County Finals in September with Renfrewshire , the eventual winners in a very closely fought Tournament, I’m sure most competitors would have found Mr Rodger’s comment offensive.

Reply from Nick Rodgers

Good afternoon June.

Hope all well and thanks for the mail which was forwarded on to me.

Many apologies if I caused offence, which I clearly have.

It was unintentional and, as you say, a bit throwaway.
I’m well aware of the efforts that go into these events, both from players and organisers.

In my years at an agency the redoubtable Colin Farquharson, a doyen of the ladies amateur scene, and myself would pick up the SLGA county results and batter them round the houses.

Easier days! Anyway, thanks for getting in touch. All feedback gratefully received.

All the best for the festive season and good golfing in 2018.

Kind regards, Nick

Hi Nick,

Many thanks for your prompt reply.

I am an avid sports fan (not just golf), and I do appreciate the work you do in promoting golf, and ladies golf – my good friend Carol Fell certainly sang your praises !!

However it is a worrying and stressful time, especially in the pressure to amalgamate the Ladies Counties and the Gents Areas.

This is complicated and not helped by the attitude of several gents towards women over a long period of time.

Unfortunately your one sentence just hit a nerve, and possibly I overreacted – though I was out of my chair faster than a cruise missile.
I certainly accept your apology, and I do hope we can meet up at one of these meetings to laugh it off.

 Kind Regards June

Hello again June.

Thanks for coming back and, aye, I can appreciate the hassles you’ll have had down the seasons with certain gents still living in the Cretaceous period.
It’s not often I stoke up much reaction so the thought of someone rising off their chair in a fury is something to savour!!
Give my regards to Carol.

Thanks again. Nick

SCOTTISH GOLF CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS, VIDEO & FEEDBACK

From the Scottish Golf Website

Dear Golfer

Thank you for attending The Future of Golf Conference in Edinburgh earlier this month.
We hope you enjoyed the presentations, discussions and the opportunity to take part in the debate around finding solutions to the challenges we face in our game. It was great to meet so many people with a passion for the game across the golfing spectrum and gain opinion, insights and feedback which will shape our future direction.
Our Board and staff team have been working hard to collate the content from the Conference and this e-newsletter pack provides a recap for you, which we hope you will share with your fellow golfers.
Over the coming weeks, the Board of Scottish Golf will be meeting to discuss how we use these insights to deliver our strategy of growing participation in golf and building stronger clubs. The feedback we have had has been hugely positive and we look forward to harnessing the collective power of clubs and golfers to create a brighter future for our game.
Thank you for your continued support.

Eleanor Cannon, Executive Chair - Scottish Golf

Scottish Golf have themed all the general comments, suggestions and feedback from delegates attending the Conference to give you a full overview of the opinions coming in on the day, which they will take on board in their discussions.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HEATHER AND AN UPDATE

Click to play this Smilebox slideshow

Liz Hale and Captain June Lockhart visited Heather Anderson in hospital yesterday afternoon, and they  glad to say she has improved in her mobility.

She can walk a little around the wards, and was most interested in the golf talk !! She might be home in a few days but unfortunately she had a fall which has set her back – but luckily there was nothing broken.

It would be great if some members could keep sending her a message now and then – she does very much appreciate it, as does her daughter, Lesley.

However today -- Seemingly there is a bug in the ward and Heather has been moved into a side ward. She is now in Room 10 in Ward 4 of the RAH. This may have put her chances of getting home for Christmas on hold. Shame to gave set backs when she is doing so well

Some messages that have come in today -- Have been sent to Liz to pass on the Heather's daughter Lesley

PAST MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY JEAN SMITH HAS DIED

Jean at the 2015 RLCGA AGM
It is with deep sadness that, after bravely facing up to her illness over the last few years, we inform you of the death of Jean Smith (Cathcart Castle).
Jean was a very loyal and hard working member of the County, having acted as Membership Secretary for several years. She was also very active in her own Club and in much of the organisation of the 75th Greenlees Anniversary Celebrations. Jean was a lovely lady to deal with, and she will be very sadly missed by all in Renfrewshire County.

June Lockhart (Captain)

Jean joined RLCGA in 2006. After she joined the committee and it had been decided to split the tasks of the Secretary and create a Membership Secretary, I immediately thought of Jean and she she took on this role with great enthusiasm in 2009. Her records were immaculate.
Having worked previously with Jean when she was a member of Bonnyton and Lady Captain, I was very happy to work along side her especially when it came to hand over all her records as RLCGA transferred their data to Club V1.
By this time Jean's health stopped her from continuing an active interest in the County but I know she always had a great love of the game of golf and when she could no longer play, she was always interested to know what was going on

Freda Tuck - Former Results Secretary

When the 75th Greenlees Trophy Anniversary celebrations were held at Cathcart Castle on the 19th September 2015 and organised by Sheila Orr and the ladies at Cathcart Castle it is certainly a day that I remember with much fun and laughter.

Jean who was the Ladies handicap Secretary at Cathcart Castle and RLCGA Membership Secretary at that time  was not well enough to attend the celebrations that day which was sad considering the time and effort that she and her husband and put into producing a wonderful brochure for the day which I still have as a keepsake.    CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

Jean with President Jennifer Mack and Past Captain Gillian Kyle
at the 9th Hole at Pollok GC in the 2009 Centenary Shotgun
In happier days back in 2009 she enjoyed the County Centenary Celebrations over Pollok GC where of course this years County Championship took place.

Carol Fell Webmaster

As you have all said Jean was heavily involved in golf.
She thoroughly enjoyed welcoming the players from all County Clubs on the 75th Greenlees Anniversary and the icing on the cake was we won the 3rd Division that season in 2015 and Jean played her part in that.
Jean was a lovely lady and we will all miss her.

Sheila Orr (Cathcart Castle)

The Funeral is Monday 11th at 2pm at the Linn. Everyone is invited to join the family afterwards at Cathcart Castle.

GOLF IN SCOTLAND IS SINKING FAST, DELEGATES TOLD

June and Sandra

Some of the delegates

Around 500 delegates including Captain June Lockhart, Vice Captain Sandra Littlejohn and your webmaster Carol attended the first Scottish Golf national conference at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre yesterday (Saturday 2nd December)

It was easily the soundbite that made the biggest impact during a four-and-a-half hour discussion about the future of golf in Scotland. “We are all on the Titanic if we choose not to do anything,”

When he was subsequently accused by one delegate of being responsible for “a lot of negativity” about the state of the game in its birthplace by delivering that message, Stewart Darling, a Scottish Golf board member, stuck firmly to his guns. “It’s not negativity – it’s reality,” he said in response.

Eleanor Cannon, the Scottish Golf chair, kicked off the day’s proceedings in the capital by asking a wide cross section of the game to “suspend disbelief” following recent negativity towards the governing body on the back of a controversial proposed new strategy being put on hold as some keynote speakers addressed the audience and, with all due respect to the others, it was Darling who definitely made the strongest impression in the hall.

HEATHER SENDS HER THANKS

Hi All,
I saw Heather on Friday. Feeling a bit better and happy to chat. Making some progress. getting physio so been walking.

Heather has asked if all those who have sent best wishes, cards and enquired after her can be thanked.

She has appreciated all the good wishes. She would also like to specifically thank those who have visited her in hospital. As you know hospitals can mean a long day in the ward. She enjoys the company.

By the way, she has half an iron in with her - grip and half the shaft - just to keep the golf on the go !

Cheers Liz Hale.
