Megan Briggs is the 2007 RLCGA Champion

Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) has retained the Renfrewshire women’s golf championship she won for the first time at the age of 16 last year.
At Erskine Golf Club, Megan, who qualified in fourth position, beat 10 times record county champion Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle), the leading qualifier, for the second year in a row, this time by 4 and 3 in the morning semi-final instead of in the final.
In the final Megan beat Stirling University student Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze), who won the title in 2003, by one hole in a very tight match. They were all square after 16 holes. Then Megan won the 17th and halved the last to be champion again.
Clare-Marie, the No2 qualifier, had beaten the No 3 seed, Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) by 3 and 1 in her semi-final.

County Championship -- Day 1 Results

Defending champion Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) will meet record-setting 10 times champion Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle), the No 1 qualifier, in the first of this morning's (Thu) semi-finals of the Renfrewshire women's county golf championship at Erskine Golf Club.
It will be a repeat of last year's final in which the 17-year-old Megan beat Donna by 6 and 5 with five birdies in 13 holes.
In the other semi-final, Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) will play Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze), the 2003 county champion and No 2 qualifier this week.
The semi-finals will tee off at 9.30 and 9.45 with the final at 2pm.

Maureen Richmond is Runner Up in Spanish Seniors

The Italian François Colmant became the Spanish Seniors Champion today at the Club of Golf of Bonalba (Alicante). A final round of 79 , which was one better than her first round and one less than the total by RLCGA's Maureen Richmond (Kilmacolm)
Maureen who was the leader after day one had a chance to force a play-off by sinking a putt on the last green. However it was not to be and the Italian won by one shot.

Megan Briggs goes to Winter Training in Spain

The SLGA is holding its annual Winter Training Camp in Pals, Northern Spain from March 10-24 2007. The training will be led by the newly appointed SLGA National Coach, Kevin Craggs. Maureen and Barbara are Runners Up in Spanish Seniors "Doubles"

The Spanish partnership of Marta Estany and Vicky Pertierra won the Senior Womens "Doubles" Championship today at the Club of Golf of Bonalba, in Alicante. On a day that was cloudy and very windy the scoring was exceedingly difficult. Congratulations go to RLCGA's Maureen Richmond and Barbara Biggart on their tremendous achievement in just missing out on the big win by 1 or 2 shots and ended up being 3rd overall 1 shot behind the Spanish winners

Eilidh Briggs selected for Scottish Under 16's

Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) has been selected by the SLGA to represent Scotland in the above Scottish Girls Under 16 Stroke play Championship to be played at Craigielaw on the 5th and 6th April 2007.

The SLGA AGM took place at the Quality Hotel in Perth today.
The meeting opened with a minutes silence in memory for Jessie Valentine and Kathleen McNeil who both passed away in the last year

The AGM was very long with the audience being informed of all the changes to the SLGA who are now a Limited Company

Belle Robertson and Toni Moffat were both elected as Vice Presidents to the SLGA for services rendered to golf

A detailed explanation of the current financial situation and future projection by Finance Director Dr Lynne Terry, resulted in a majority voting for an increase in annual subscription to £10 per club member.

Ethel Jack, from Midlothian was elected President and Aberdeenshire's Margaret McNaughton took over as Chairman of the Board. Winfred McCallum from Stirling and Clackmannan replaced Margaret Rodgers, and Helen Cuthbertson from Borders replaced Isobel Fairlie as Board members.
At the end of the meeting LGU Deputy Councillor, Shona Malcolm, gave a status report of the One Plan for Golf and Club Golf initiatives.

Also of note was that the SLGA has appointed the highly respected PGA professional KEVIN CRAGGS as their new national coach as they aim to further improve the skills of their talented young stars.
Kevin, who also doubles as the Daily Record’s Golf Doctor, a teacher for Bunkered Magazine and a commentator for BBC Radio Scotland, can’t wait to get to work helping Scotland’s best women golfers to lower their score on the course.
Kevin, who has coached several top professional golfers and was recently voted one of the top 25 golf coaches in the UK and Ireland by Golf Monthly, said: “I am thrilled to be joining the SLGA.

Tribute to Kathleen McNeil

Kathleen Wilson McNeil --- Pioneer of ladies' golf in Scotland; Born May 20, 1916; Died December 8, 2006.

Katherine, or Kathleen as she was know to most, was born in 1916 and lived all her life in Greenock, apart from her years of education at St Leonard's in St Andrews and at Edinburgh University, from which she graduated in 1939. She practised as a solicitor in the firm of WW&J McClure, where her father, Charles P McNeil, had been a partner, and was also the proprietrix of the family drapery business.
From the age of four, she played golf and had a very successful career as an amateur at various clubs including Greenock, Kilmacolm, Shiskine, The Ladies Club Troon, St Rule and Renfrewshire Ladies County Golf Association.
In her later years she was made an honorary member of the clubs in recognition of her enormous contribution to golf and its administration locally and nationally. Her career in golf administration began with Renfrewshire County Ladies, of which she was non-playing captain from 1957 to 1959, and at her death was honorary life president.
She was chairman (1965 to 1967 and 1974 to 1975), president (1982 to 1985) and an honorary vice-president of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association; past president (1987 to 1988) and, since 1991, honorary vice-president of the Ladies Golf Union.
She was awarded an MBE for her services to ladies' golf and in the same year was one of five Scots commended for contributions to their chosen sports at national level as unpaid volunteers, receiving an award from the Scottish Sports Council.
Kathleen was immensely popular with players of all ages and was most encouraging to the young, up-and-coming club, county and national players. She travelled the country and the world giving support. As recently as 1999 she travelled to Vancouver to support the British team in the Commonwealth tournament.
Nancy Chisholm, current SLGA president, said: "Kathleen McNeil was a lady with a wonderful sense of humour and amazing knowledge, one of our own special, greatly respected Scottish characters who will leave a void in Scottish ladies' golf."
Kathleen had many other local interests and was a life long member of Trinity Church in Greenock. She was also very much a world traveller, visiting lifelong friends
en route, her good health enabling her to continue to do this until recent years.
Unfortunately, she had no surviving family but was loved and supported thoughout her life by several lifelong friends and their families. Sue Cowan, a daughter of her oldest friend, came from Australia to be with her in the last weeks of her life following a stroke in mid-November. Kathleen's well- kent figure – topped out with "the hat" – will be sorely missed on our fairways.

Kathleen McNeil has died

It is with great sadness that I have to inform all our members that our Hon. Life President Kathleen McNeil (in her 91st year) died peacefully last night at 11:30pm.
Kathleen (pictured left) was in great form at both the RLCGA and the Greenock Golf Club AGM's at the beginning of November. She then had a stroke on the 13th November.
The funeral will take place at 12 noon on Wednesday 13th December 2006 at Greenock Crematorium .

The RLCGA County AGM was held at Haggs Castle Golf Club yesterday evening and approximately 50 members attended including our 90 year Honorary Life President Kathleen McNeil

Reports were given by Jane Thomson (Secretary) Audrey Sturgess (Treasurer), Fiona Roger (Results Secretary), Gillian Kyle (Junior Secretary)

Christeen Finlayson (Vice Captain) then told us that in 2009 it will be the RLCGA Centenary Year and that they were hoping to collate as much details from the past years --- so if you have any memorabilia please let Christeen know

Maureen Mitchell (Old Ranfurly) gave a report on the Course Rating program and announced that Renfrewshire had completed all the courses well ahead schedule

Retiring from the committee are Brenda Livingstone (Lamlash), Maureen Mitchell (Cathcart Castle) and Anne Robinson (Ranfurly Castle).
New to the committee are Maureen Cook (Lochwinnoch), Maureen Mitchell (Old Ranfurly) and Mamie Robin (Elderslie)Captain Beth then gave her annual report ---

The County Team Training Squad was coached again this year by Karyn Burns at Mearns Castle Golf Academy. The Academy sponsored the team by giving each squad member free practice at the range. Mini leagues were organised over the Winter months. Due to all the Child Protection issues the County needed to have a Disciplinary Procedure. This has been drawn up and passed by the Committee. A copy is here for anyone who is interested.

She then told us how The Website continued to tick along with visits to the site this year being over 19,000 up 6,500 on last year. September 2006 was the best month ever with 4,200 visits.
New this year was the Videos Page --- Unfortunately only viewable to those who have Broadband. However, those who were able to view them were able to see highlights of various County events. If your club is not receiving the results for handicap purposes, handicap exchange letters can be downloaded from the website. Also new was the Hot News Page where should anyone like to try and upload news they could contact Carol and have a go --- Unfortunately not many takers!! As with the Hot News Page the great disappointment to the website is the lack of news sent in by the members --- via the send me news page.
She also said Carol tries her best to make up stories that she has heard of!!
She would be delighted for some help on the matter or any new ideas that could perhaps be introduced in the forth coming season

The new style logo on our sweaters has proved to be popular with over 100 items sold.

The Winter Foursomes final took place on 27th April at Cowglen Golf Club. The winners were Fiona Roger and Anne Robinson (Ranfurly Castle), beating Linda Stevenson and Alison Patrick (Whitecraigs) by 3 & 1.

Fifty competitors played in The Championship, which was held at The Eastwood Golf Club. Denise Cowan (Cochrane Castle) won the Peggy Clark Cup. In the semi finals Megan Briggs beat Sara Harman by 3/2 with Megan having a hole in one at the 7th. Donna Jackson had a very close game with Gillian Kyle winning at the 20th. In the final Megan played excellent golf beating defending champion Donna by 6/5. Megan was 2 under par for the 13 holes she played. Congratulations to Megan on winning the Championship for the first time.

The team played a match against The Renfrewshire Boys, the boys winning by 3 ½ games to 1 ½. At the end of May we played against an Eastwood Youth Team and unfortunately the boys won again 2 games to 1. Thankfully, the losing streak didn’t continue.

Renfrewshire were well represented at the Scottish Championships at Dunbar with Clare-Marie Carlton reaching the knockout stages and Gillian Kyle reaching the last eight of the Rosebowl.

The County had great success at the Inter County Foursomes at Irvine Golf Club. Gillian McGinlay (Cochrane Castle) & Maureen Skinner (Gourock) won the Scratch and in the Handicap section Penny Baglin & Audrey Barclay (East Renfrewshire) came 1st and Marie Doherty & Sandra Littlejohn (Erskine) were runners up.

In lovely weather in June we hosted the West of Scotland Inter County Matches at East Renfrewshire Golf Club. The team consisted of Megan Briggs, Clare-Marie Carlton, Gillian Kyle, Donna Jackson, Jennifer Jenkins, Gillian McGinlay, Kate O’Sullivan and Lesley Robertson. The girls played extremely well winning all three games to qualify for the first time in 8 years to go to The Scottish County Finals. I would like to thank all who assisted for all their help and a special thank you, to East Renfrewshire Golf Club for granting the courtesy of their course for the 3 days.

The West of Scotland Girls Association held a competition on the 9th August at The Ladies Golf Club Troon to mark their 50th Anniversary. Aileen Wilson and her team were runners up.
The Scottish Seniors Championship was played at Machrihannish Golf Club where Jennifer Mack reached the quarter finals. Renfrewshire were well represented again and all the ladies who played seem to have a riotous time!

96 ladies attended a Bridge Drive at Eastwood Golf Club to raise funds for Team expenses to go to The Scottish County Finals. We held a raffle with same fantastic prizes. I would like to thank all who gave donations or donated raffle prizes especially, Cameron Kyle of Calder Millerfield who donated a round of golf for four at Gleneagles; Frank Blincow who donated a Round of Golf for four at East Renfrewshire & The Kings Theatre who donated 2 theatre tickets. We raised an amazing £1300.

The team Megan Briggs, Clare-Marie Carlton, Sara Harman, Donna Jackson, Gillian Kyle, Gillian McGinlay, Lesley Robertson, Carol Whyte, Vice Captain & Team psychologist Christeen Finlayson and I travelled to The Hirsel Golf Club to the Scottish County Finals on 21st September. This was the worst possible weekend as it clashed with The Ryder Cup and the Glasgow September weekend. We are very grateful to the caddies who gave of their time to come. I would like to give a special mention to Pearl Orr, Brenda Stewart, Lindsay Mathie and our Irish friend Gerald Bunting and his wife Pat who came for all three days. However the timing didn’t dampen our spirits and the girls played superbly. We won on the Friday and Saturday and lost to the winner Fife on Sunday. We finished runners up winning the F.J. Morison Trophy for the first time.

The team was sponsored by Glenmuir and each team member received a raspberry pink wind top. These will be available for purchase next year. This is all thanks to Sarah Kirby.

Gillian McGinlay won the Rosebowl Final by 1 hole beating Carol Fell at Haggs Castle Golf Club.

The West of Scotland Championship was held in October as it had to be abandoned in May, due to adverse weather. Renfrewshire again did really well. Clare-Marie Carlton became the West of Scotland Champion for the first time, Donna Jackson runner up and Sara Harman third. Renfrewshire also won the team event. This meant that Renfrewshire had won every team trophy in the West this year.

On the same day Megan Briggs represented Renfrewshire at the Champion of Champions at Glasgow Gailes where she came runner up. Elaine Moffat from Fife was the winner.

Megan won the Tom Lehman Trophy for the third time. She won the West of Scotland Girls’ Championship and was appointed West of Scotland Girls’ Association Captain. She reached the last 16 of The Scottish Girls’ Championship.

Megan was in the Scottish Schools team and was part of the winning Scottish team at The Home Internationals at Mount Stewart, Northern Ireland. This team was captained by Jennifer Jenkins. Well done to Jennifer and all the girls.

Clare-Marie Carlton represented Scotland in the European Junior Ladies Team Championships which was also captained by Jennifer Jenkins. Representing Stirling University she won the Scottish Universities Championship at Lossiemouth with Sarah Paterson (Eastwood) representing Edinburgh University winning the handicap tournament.

Kate O’Sullivan finished 4th with her lowest ever score over 36 holes, in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate Women’s Golf Tournament in the United States.

As Gillian has reported Eilidh Briggs has had a fantastic year bringing her handicap down from 12 – 5. Well done to Eilidh and all the Juniors especially The Kennedy Salver Team.

Janette McCartney (Erskine) finished second handicap in the LGU Challenge Bowl at Dunblane.

Fiona Roger (Ranfurly Castle) won the handicap prize at the Spanish Seniors.

Dorothy Yates & Christine Fowler (Cowglen) won the handicap prize at the Scottish Ladies Foursomes.

Trish Davidson and Lorraine Morrow (Erskine) won the Grand Final of the Amateur Lady Golfer Summer Knock Out Pairs competition at the Belfry.

Renfrewshire was well represented in the West of Scotland Vets team. Jane Thomson was runner up in the West of Scotland Vets Bronze Championship.

She congratulated everyone who had won their club championships.

Congratulations to Ranfurly Castle Team, who won the National Finals of the Captains Team Trophy and to Cochrane Castle for winning and retaining the Greenlees Trophy, Kilmacolm on winning the 2nd Division and Erskine on winning the 3rd.

On the administrative side Pamela McKenzie is on the SLGA Executive Committee and is Chairman of County Golf. Sheila Goudie is Secretary and Lilias Snodgrass is Treasurer of the West of Scotland Vets. Nancy MacGadie is President of the West of Scotland Girls Golfing Association.

She then thanked her committee for all their help this year.

Past Captain Aileen retires from committee this year and she thanked her for all her hard work and enthusiasm. Aileen has a great wealth of knowledge which will be missed from committee. Aileen deserves some of the credit for our success this year. She prepared the ground work and we just finished it off!

Finally, Beth gave us a date for our diaries, they are holding a dinner on Wednesday 14th March, 2007 at Haggs Castle Golf Club and the speaker for the evening will be Sir Craig Reedie, member of The International Olympic Committee and husband of Rosemary. Tickets can be reserved from Beth at a price of £20 per ticket.

She then finished her report and stated that she had enjoyed her first year as Captain and was looking forward to next year already.

The Prizegiving then took place with Honorary President presenting the Prizes .

Cochrane Castle are Winners of the 2006 Greenlees Trophy

The Greenlees Lunch and presentation of trophies took place today at Old Ranfurly Golf Club.
Willeen McCallum, the Greenlees Secretary gave a most informative speech detailing how close all the divisional matches finished.
Cochrane Castle were the winners of the Greenlees Trophy with 45 Points with Cathkin Braes second on 40 points
Division 2 was won by Kilmacolm with 36.5 points and Hilton Park were runners Up with 36 points.
Erskine were divisional 3 winners with 57 points with Haggs Castle runners up on 45.5 points

Clare - Marie and Team win West of Scotland Championship

The West of Scotland Championship which had been postponed in May and rearranged to be played today over Hilton Park and over 18 holes rather than the 36 holes, was won by our own Renfrewshire County Team member Clare- Marie Carlton with a 73. Donna Jackson was second with a 78 and Sara Harman 81

The Renfrewshire team won team prize.
Team: Clare-Marie 73, Sara 81, Gillian Kyle 85

Megan Briggs is the Runner Up in the Champion of Champions

Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) -- RLCGA County Champion was runner up in the Champions of Champions at Glasgow Gailes today.

National Lady Captain's Team Winners are Ranfurly Castle

RLCGA member Rosemary Reedie who is Captain of Ranfurly Castle with her team consisting of RLCGA members Mary Craig, Anne Robinson, and Sarah Kirby are the very first Scottish winners of the National finals of the Captains Team Trophy at the De Vere Carden Park Golf resort near Chester today with a grand stableford total of 79 points --- 7 points ahead of their nearest rivals (2 scores out of the 4 to count) The Mens Captains Team winners had a 77 points
