MAUREEN WINS AGAINST LINDSAY IN THE COUNTY ROSEBOWL

Just to let you know that Lindsay Mathie and I played at Gourock yesterday afternoon and I ran out the winner 3/1.  I have to say we both played very well and first blood went to Lindsay with a conceded birdie at the 4th.  I got it back to square at the difficult par 3 7th with a conceded birdie then won 8 with another birdie and 9 to go 2 up at the turn.

An ‘out of the blue’ four putt from me saw Lindsay only one down after 10.  Par for me at 11 saw me go back to two and a conceded birdie for me at 13 saw me 3 up playing 14.

Lindsay won 14 and 15 with pars and I won 16 with a par to go dormie.

At 17 we both played ‘****’ tee shots and Lindsay had to return to the tee while I was lucky to creep onto the green and it was all over.

A pretty good game with our best ball being 4 under par.  Lindsay finished off the day with a great birdie 3 at the difficult 18th in the ‘bye’ and then we headed to the bar for well earned refreshment.

It was a glorious afternoon – unlike the medal round at the start of the season!

The stage is set for a last-day title decider between defending champions Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire in the West Division women's inter-county team golf championship at Bothwell Castle tomorrow.

2013 County Jamboree Day 2

TRIBUTE TO DONNA -- 30 YEARS COUNTY GOLF

Donna is presented with a gift from the County for 30 years playing in the County Team
The County Jamboree dinner was held on Monday evening at Bothwell Castle GC at which all the County Teams attended.
At the end of the dinner Captain Maureen gave a short speech in honour of Donna's Service. ---- Here is what she said ---
Ladies
It is unusual for another Captain to speak at our Dinner but I have special permission for this special occasion.
I invite you all to join with Renfrewshire in celebration of the contribution by one of our team members to County and Scottish Golf over the last 3 decades.
Donna Jackson has been a part of the Renfrewshire County Team for 30 years, this year.
To put that in perspective for some of our younger golfing friends here tonight - and apologies to Donna for this – Donna was playing for her County when your parents were in Primary School!!
I think that it is an achievement which should be recognised and I am sure you will agree.

I would like to thank our Guest Carol Fell for the basis of my synopsis of Donna’s golfing career.  This is adapted from the wonderful book Carol published for our Centenary in 2009.

Donna started playing golf when she was 8 years old - at the time her Mum and Dad moved to Bellshill Golf Club to work as the Club Steward and Stewardess.
After 6 years at Bellshill, they moved to Cochrane Castle to work and this is where Donna’s golf has been based ever since – winning their Ladies Championship 21 times.  At the age of 17, she was invited to join Renfrewshire Ladies' County.
In 1984 she played in the team for the first time.  On her way to her first match at Gourock (my own home club), she was involved in a car accident and so she missed the morning foursomes.  She arrived in time to play her singles match in the afternoon and won against Isobel Harvey of D&A – who remains a good friend to Donna to this day.
That same year Donna won the West of Scotland Girls' Championship; was beaten in the final of the Scottish Girls' under 18s and was in the winning team in the Girls' Home Internationals in Wales.
In 1990 she played in Scotland’s winning team in the Ladies’ Home Internationals at Hunstanton.  Her tenacity on the golf course is illustrated when Donna was four down with four to play and managed to win the last four holes for a magnificent half – which surely must have felt like her own personal victory.
She has represented Scotland in the Welsh and Irish Strokeplay Championships.
Closer to home, Donna played in the Scottish Inter-County Finals at St. Andrews when Renfrewshire won in 1987 (under the captaincy of our President Eileen Gibb who is here this evening) and again in 2010 when we won here at Bothwell Castle.  On that occasion I was honoured to be Vice Captain under the Captaincy of Trish Brown.

In 2005 Donna won the Renfrewshire County Championship for a record-breaking tenth time and this year (2013) by again winning, she increased that record to eleven.
A pretty remarkable achievement all round, I think you will agree.  A golfer who goes about her business without any fuss and as I have said before, she lets her clubs do the talking.

Apart from being pretty handy with a golf club, Donna’s greatest quality is that she is friendly, approachable and an all-round decent person.
In conclusion can I ask you all to charge your glasses and join with me in a toast to Donna Jackson, Golfer and friend.  Donna
Can I ask Donna to come up now and receive this small token of our appreciation.

At the end of he dinner Donna, Eileen and Carol were presented with beautiful table presentations kindly given by Lanarkshire Captain Fiona Scott. The floral presentations were beautifully made by Lanarkshire's Joanna Harvey

EILIDH LOSES IN THE SECOND ROUND OF THE BRITISH MATCHPLAY

Scotland's Jess Meek, Rachael Watton and Renfrewshire's Eilidh Briggs failed to make it to the last 16 of the British women's open amateur golf championship at Machynys Golf Club, near Llanelli, South Wales today.
Eilidh (Kilmacolm) scored a very good two-hole win in round 1 over Emily Pedersen, a Danish player whose this season has won the Spanish women's open amateur title and, more recently, the German girls' open championship.
Because some ties went into extra holes, Eilidh had to hang around for ages, waiting for her next tie to start. Eventually Emma Carberry (Highwoods) won her match at the 19th but the Briggs-Carberry second-round match for a place in the last 16 did not set out - albeit in glorious sunshine - until after 5pm.
The East Sussex player beat the Scot by two holes after the match was all square on the 13th tee.
WELL DONE EILIDH IN WHAT WE BELIEVE WAS HORRENDOUS CONDITIONS - WIND AND RAIN.

EILIDH MAKES THE CUT AT THE BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Renfrewshire's Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) battled her way through an awful day of wind and rain to reach the match-play stages of the 111th British women's open amateur golf championship at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Machynys course near Llanelli on the South Wales coast today.
Unfortunately Alyson McKechin missed the cut.

EILIDH AND ALYSON ARE PLAYING IN THE BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Report by Colin Farquharson
LUCK OF THE DRAW COUNTED AGAINST SCOTS
Most of the eight Scots in the field face a battle to be among the leading 64 after Wednesday's second qualifying round of the British women's open amateur golf championship at Machynys Golf Club, near Llanelli in South Wales.
As the early morning wet and windy weather gave way to a sunny and pleasant late afternoon and evening, so the scores tumbled. Unfortunately, most of the Scots
had had to endure early starts and the toughest conditions.
At the end of a long day, Jess Meek (Carnoustie Ladies), Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) and Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) are the best placed Scots on five-over-par 77 - nine shots behind the
overnight leader, Caroline Nistrup from Copenhagen.
Meek was going reasonably well until she bogeyed the 11th, 12th, 13th and 16th for an inward half of four-over 40.
Early-morning starter Watton worked hard for halves of 39-38 as did Briggs for 38-39 figures.
Scottish champion Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) had two double bogeys in a 79 (40-39).
Hannah McCook also had two double bogeys in an 80 with halves of 40.
Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) had a double bogey at the 16th and finished with an 81 (39-42).
Jane Turner (Craigielaw), out early in the field, had three double bogeys in what was miserable weather at that time. She finished with an 82 (41-41)
Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies), who hit the first ball before 7am, sadly took 85 shots to get round. She dropped seven shots over the second, third and fourth holes.
