ALYSON MAKES THE CUT AT THE BRITISH AND LOSES IN FIRST ROUND -- EILIDH HAS A BAD 2ND ROUND TO MISS THE CUT
Only five Scots have made it through to the match-play stages of the British women's open amateur championship at Royal St George's Golf Club, Sandwich, Kent.
Aberdeen-born Gemma Dryburgh (Beaconsfield) 153, Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) 155, Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) 155, Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) 155 and Connie Jaffrey 156 succeeded where Curtis Cup player Eilidh Briggs 158, Clara Young 161, Scottish champion Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) 160, Clara Young (North Berwick) 161 and Airdrie-born Rachael Taylor (Germany) 163 failed.
The most notable failure of all was title-holder and Curtis Cup player Georgia Hall (Parkstone) who missed the magic figure of 156 by six shots with rounds of 78 and 84 for 162.
After a first round of 74, Eilidh's halves in her second round of 84 were 46 and 38. She had only two par figures in her first 14 holes, the lowlight being a quadruple bogey 8 at the eight. Eilidh did birdie the second, 14th and 17th but it was too little too late.
Lauren Whyte (St Regulus), a former Scottish U18 girls champion, had a 77 for 155 which at one time looked to be one shot too many but as the scores started to climb so Lauren's total "improved" as the day wore on and she qualified comfortably for the match-play.
Other Scots qualifiers on the 155 mark were Carnoustie Ladies' Ailsa Summers (78-77) and last year's Scottish champion Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) (76-79)
Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies), beaten finalist in last month's Scottish women's amateur championship, squeezed through on the critical mark of 156.

DID YOU LOSE A VISOR AT HAGGS CASTLE -- MYSTERY SOLVED !!
Rosemary Dykes, Margaret Horne, Jennifer Graham and Eileen Gibb - Visor on LHS. |
Past captain Rosemary Dykes was contacted by Haggs Castle's Neal Stewart who found this visor on the bench at the 12th Short Hole tee.
Rosemary did say that there were some other ladies sitting at the bench before she got there so maybe it was one of those ladies' visors.
Neal will keep the visor at home in the meantime and if I hear of any ladies who lost a visor at HCGC I am to let him know.
THE MYSTERY IS SOLVED -- THANKS GO TO LANARKSHIRE'S CAPTAIN JEAN MACINTYRE --- ONE OF HER PHOTOGRAPHS REVEALED THE OWNER --- D&A'S COLLEEN BROWN (pictured below)
The visor will be returned to her owner in the near future.
D&A County Captain Carol Sim thanks Neal Stewart, Carol Fell and Jean Macintyre for the bit of Miss Marple detective work !!

RENFREWSHIRE WIN THE INTER COUNTY JAMBOREE BY HALF A POINT !!
RLCGA - West Division Inter County Champions |
Renfrewshire started the day level with Lanarkshire so both teams were anxious to get as many points on the board as possible.
Lanarkshire, in their match with Ayrshire, won all 3 of their foursomes matches which gave Renfrewshire a difficult task. Clare Hargan and Jillian Farrell of D & A had a great win over Eilidh Briggs and Katrina Milne by 6 & 4 but Renfrewshire won the next two games which still kept the matches level at lunchtime.
Lanarkshire started the afternoon with wins by Lauren d'Ambrosio and Susan Wood. Ayrshire came back strongly to win the next 3 games and Emma Caddow took the last. A win for Lanarkshire giving them a total of 5 match points and 16 individual games.

D & A won the next 2. Donna Jackson held on to get a 1 up victory over Laura McGeachy and yesterday's Renfrewshire hero Liz Stewart had a great 4 & 3 win over Anne Laing.
So it was all down to Megan Briggs. After an up and down match, Megan sank a brilliant putt for a birdie 3 at the 17th for a half with Nichola Ferguson which proved to be the winning putt for Renfrewshire.

USA WIN CURTIS CUP MATCH 13-7
USA WIN CURTIS CUP MATCH 13-7 AFTER GB and I WIN SINGLES 4.5-3.5
NEWS RELEASE FROM THE USGA
ST. LOUIS – The USA won three singles matches and halved a fourth on Sunday to regain the Curtis Cup, 13-7, and cap a dominant week over Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) at St. Louis Country Club.
The winning point came courtesy of 2013 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Emma Talley. Playing in the opening singles match, the 20-year-old from Princeton, Ky., made a 3-foot par putt on the 15th green to defeat Bronte Law, 19, of England, 4 and 3.
“Dreams do come true, that's for sure,” said a jubilant Talley, who went 3-0-1 during the Match. “This was the best week ever. I'm just happy to play with my friends and to do it for my country is even better.”
“That is the coolest trophy of all the seven that I've ever won,” said a proud USA Captain Ellen Port, who has captured six individual USGA championships. “That is the most special trophy, always, that I will ever have, and ever have been a part of.”
The Curtis Cup Match is a biennial competition between the USA and GB&I that dates to 1932 and is conducted by the United States Golf Association (USGA) and Ladies Golf Union (LGU).
A point is awarded for each victory and a half-point goes to each side for a draw. GB&I needed 10 points to retain the Cup, while the USA needed 10½ points to regain the Cup. Each team consists of eight female amateur golfers.
Talley, a rising junior at the University of Alabama, continued the steady play that was the hallmark of the USA Team throughout the three days of competition. After taking a 2-up lead with consecutive wins at the fourth and fifth holes, Talley maintained the advantage for the remainder of the match.
Talley knew that the honor of leading her team onto the course – and potentially securing the winning point – was not something to be taken lightly.
“It was a privilege that I got to go out first,” said Talley, one of three Curtis Cup players who will compete in the U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in two weeks. “I was very happy that I got that opportunity and glad I got to secure the point.”
Ally McDonald, 21, of Fulton, Miss., earned the second point for the USA. The 2013 North & South Women’s Amateur champion won the par-4 sixth with a birdie to go 1 up and cruised to a 4-and-3 victory over Annabel Dimmock, 17, of England.
“It was a blessing to have been chosen (for the team), and I just wanted to take advantage of this opportunity and make memories and play the best golf that I could,” said McDonald, who will join Talley and GB&I’s Stephanie Meadow at the Women’s Open. “I expected coming in to be a big part of the team and to contribute as much as I could, and I think I played really well.”
GB&I rallied to take four of the remaining six singles matches and tighten the large deficit.
“I’m so proud of the girls for how they rallied all day today,” said GB&I Captain Tegwen Matthews, who is now 1-1 as captain after she led her team to victory in 2012. “Especially when they knew the match was gone, and yet they never gave up. That could have put the chins really even further down.
“But no, we won the afternoon singles session. So that's a great way to finish and gives everyone a bit of a boost to say the least from a pretty disastrous two days.”
Georgia Hall, 18, of England, holed out for eagle from the fairway on 15 in her 3-and-2 victory over Kyung Kim, 20, of Chandler, Ariz. The hole-out came after Kim’s approach landed a foot from the hole.
Gemma Dryburgh, 20, of Scotland, lost a 3-up lead to Ashlan Ramsey, 18, of Milledgeville, Ga., but was able to eke out a 1-up victory.
The final GB&I point went to Meadow, 22, of Northern Ireland. The recent University of Alabama graduate rallied from an early deficit to notch a 2-and-1 win over Alison Lee, 19, of Valencia, Calif.
The 2014 Curtis Cup Match was Meadow and Ramsey’s final event as amateurs, as they will turn professional immediately following the event.
Mariah Stackhouse, 20, of Riverdale, Ga., carried a 1-up lead over Eilidh Briggs, 21, of Scotland, to the 18th. However, Stackhouse’s double bogey after going long over the green halved the match.
The USA’s 9½-2½ lead following the first four sessions was the largest four-round lead since the playing format was expanded to five sessions over three days in 2008, bettering the 2010 USA mark of 8½-3½.
The 2016 Curtis Cup Match will be conducted at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, outside of Dublin, Ireland.

But at least GB and Ireland have broken the ice as far as a game victory is concerned.
Gillian Kirkwood writes: Bronte Law and Annabel Dimmock won the last three holes to record a one-hole win against Erynne Lee and Annie Park.
Bronte holed a 20ft putt for a birdie at the 16th; she was conceded her putt for a win on 17th, and Annabel got down in 4 on the last, lagging a 40ft putt to 18 inches. An American ball was much closer but both US players took 5.
The British reticence at applauding a missed putt changed into a cheer when we realised Bronte and Annabel had won.
Let's hope that this gives the GB and I team room the fillip they need and we come out fighting this afternoon. First match will be at 3:45pm local time.
The Americans' two victories this morning were achieved by Kyung Kim and Alison Lee, who beat GB and I's top world-ranked pair, Stephanie Meadow and Georgie Hall, 4 and 2 in the lead-off tie this morning, and by Emma Talley and Mariah Stackhouse who were two up after 15 against Gabriella Cowley and Gemma Dryburgh and won the point by a 2 and 1 margin.

June 6, 2014 ST. LOUIS – If those who live near St. Louis Country Club were hoping to sleep in this morning, the beginning of the 38th Curtis Cup Match probably forced a change of plans.
GB&I Supporters - sing the Curtis Cup Song |
That’s because the voices of numerous Great Britain & Ireland fans rang out in the morning on the first tee, serenading their team members with the same “Curtis Cup Song” – penned to the tune of “A Long Way to Tipperary” – they sang two years ago in Scotland when GB&I captured the Cup. -- CLICK HERE FOR WEST OF SCOTLAND VERSION

USA Sweeps Friday Morning Four-Ball Matches |
Photos: Friday Morning Highlights |
“We have a passion for the Curtis Cup,” said Maureen Lockett, a past president of the Scotland-based Ladies Golf Union, which along with the USGA conducts the biennial Curtis Cup Match. “We’re here to see old friends and to support the amateur side of golf.”
Lockett, who attended her first Curtis Cup in 1960, along with her GB&I compatriots, waved flags and sang along as the players filed onto the first tee for the opening four-ball matches. Players from both teams arrived with their nations’ flags painted on their faces and American and GB&I team supporters cheered as USA Captain and St. Louis resident Ellen Port embraced GB&I’s captain, Tegwen Matthews.

Players who sat out of the morning matches were allowed to practice or to follow and cheer for their teammates. Several holes behind the last group, GB&I players Eilidh Briggs, of Scotland, and Gabriella Cowley, of England, played several holes in preparation for the afternoon foursomes session.
In their first Curtis Cup appearances, the two admitted they were warming up on the holes “to get some of the nerves out.”
By morning’s end, however, their team was down 3-0 and the pressure was mounting. Both knew they needed to perform for GB&I in the afternoon.
“Obviously, I’ll be nervous on the first tee, but this helps,” added Briggs.
And when asked how it felt to hear her name in a song by GB&I supporters on the first tee earlier today, Cowley admitted, “It makes you feel proud and ready to go.” Report by --- Lisa D. Mickey who is a Florida-based freelance writer whose work has previously appeared on USGA websites.
