RENFREWSHIRE GIRLS NARROWLY LOSE OUT TO WINNING THE KENNEDY SALVER - LANARKSHIRE ARE THE WINNERS
The RLCGA Junior Kennedy Salver Team with Captain Gillian McGinlay, Vice Captain Gillian Kyle and Junior Secretary Audrey MacKenzie |
Kennedy Salver - Renfrewshire Runners-Up
Yesterday our Renfrewshire girls had their best showing in many years in the Kennedy Salver, being narrowly beaten into second place by Lanarkshire.
The morning foursomes teed off at 9am at Elderslie Golf Club under bright skies. Our three pairings were very competitive with all the matches going to the 18th hole. Niamh Kinney & Jan Adams secured a half point but unfortunately the two pairings of Heather Mushet & Anna MacKenzie and Laura Craig & Charlotte McCluskey both lost out on the 18th green. Despite so much great play this left the girls in joint last place at lunch time with Lanarkshire leading with 3 points out of a possible 3.
L to R - Anna, Jan, Charlotte, Ellie, Laura, Heather and Niamh |
The girls came out for the afternoon singles very determined, and whatever the Elderslie catering team gave them for lunch it certainly worked! The Renfrewshire girls played by far the best golf in the afternoon, winning 5 of their 6 singles matches. There was some tremendous play from the girls with great wins for Heather, Anna, Laura, Niamh and Ellie. This gave the team a total points score of 5.5 points.
Sadly there was too much ground to make up on Lanarkshire from the morning foursomes and they were the overall winners by one point, claiming 3.5 in the afternoon singles for an overall total of 6.5 points. Renfrewshire were runners-up on 5.5, with Ayrshire third on 4.5 and D&A fourth on 1.5. All of the matches were played in a great spirit and our thanks go to all the girls who competed.
The Renfrewshire girls were left ruing the lost points from the tight morning foursomes, but they were all rightly proud of their overall performance. The clubhouse talk was already about next year when Ayrshire are the hosts.
Overall it was an excellent day, which ran smoothly and fortunately the weather was kind. Many thanks to Elderslie Golf Club both for the courtesy of their course (which was in great condition) and their hospitality. Thanks also to both Captain Gillian and Vice Captain Gillian for your help in preparing and on the day. Thank you to everyone who turned up to support the girls.
A final word of thanks and farewell to Laura Craig and Jan Adams as this is their last year as juniors. We will all miss your golf but most of all your friendship, thanks for your contributions to the junior section.
Here is looking forward to Ayrshire next year and going one better !

KENNEDY SALVER -PLEASE COME ALONG AND SUPPORT
Kennedy Salver - Monday 22nd June at Elderslie Golf Club
It is only a few days to go until Renfrewshire host this year's Kennedy Salver at Elderslie Golf Club.
The Kennedy Salver is the main West of Scotland inter-county girls team competition between girls from Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire & Argyll and Renfrewshire. The trophy will be contested over 36 holes with morning foursomes and afternoon singles.
Renfrewshire Girls have not won the trophy for some time so the girls have been practising hard and are hoping to do well this coming Monday.
The girls would really appreciate your support - especially on home soil ! Please come along and support the team, either for the morning foursomes (tee times between 9:00 - 9:45) and / or the afternoon singles (tee times 1:30 - 3:00).
In addition any help you can offer in terms of ball spotting on particular holes would be much appreciated. This will be a great help in the smooth running of the day.
Hope to see you there and remember to wear pink.
