DOROTHEA IS REMEMBERED

Dorothea Hastings - 1934 - 2015

Dorothea joined Haggs Castle in 1950 when she first took up golf. She was coached by Eric Brown but did not attempt to play over the course for some time but kept practising until March 1951.

Once she started playing the course there was no stopping her. Dorothea's enthusiasm  for the game allowed her to be offered Ladies' membership at the age of 17.

She won the Highland Open at that age and was selected and played for Scotland against England in the Girls International 0f 1952 and was in the British Junior Girls Team in 1953.

She won the individual title and Scottish Universities Golf Team Championship in 1953 and then was a member of the British Touring Team to Australia and New Zealand  in 1955.
Dorothea enjoyed great success in 1958 when she won the Scottish Ladies Championship at Elie and Earlsferry and was then selected as a member of the GB&I's Curtis Cup Team and an Honorary Member of Haggs Castle and RLCGA.

Home Internationals 1960 . From L to R - Janette Wright, Ansley Lurie, Belle Robertson, Jean Burnett
Jean McCulloch (Captain) Betty Singleton, Dorothea Sommerville, Joan Lawrence and Margaret Myles
She was runner up in the Scottish in 1960 at Turnberry and semi finalist in 1963, West of Scotland Champion in 1961 and was selected to play for Scotland from 1955 - 1963 and for the British Isles against Europe in the Vangliano team 1963.
As Dorothea Somerville she won the Haggs Castle Championship 5 times and as Dorothea Hastings 5 times.
In 1961 became Captain of Haggs and in 1963 married Dr James Hastings. She then stopped playing golf for about 20 years while she brought up here children Gillian and Crawford and assist her husband running his medical practice.
Dorothea Scottish Vets Champion
She returned to golf in 1983 with a handicap of 8 and won the RLCGA Championship at Kilmacolm. She was back to scratch within just 2 years and had a remarkable run of successes by winning the Haggs, Erskine Championships and the Scottish Veterans Championships in 1992 and 1994. She also won the Scottish Foursomes with Renfrewshire's Pearl Orr.
She played for the successful Greenlees team many times and in the mid nineties served as a Scottish Selector for the West District and as RLCGA's Captain in 1995 - 1997.
With on going severe back pain Dorothea was forced to stop playing in 2003 but was still actively involved with Haggs Castle Erskine and the County.

In fact Dorothea was at the RLCGA AGM on the 4th November 2015 at Haggs Castle and enjoyed her evening there. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her and we send our sincere condolences to her daughter Gillian and son Crawford.

106th RLCGA AGM - GILLIAN KYLE IS OUR NEW CAPTAIN, JUNE LOCKHART IS THE VICE CAPTAIN AND BETH PATERSON IS PRESENTED WITH HONORARY MEMBERSHIP

Past Present and Future Captains  - Gillian McGinlay, Gillian Kyle and June Lockhart
Over 50 ladies attended the 106th  RLCGA AGM which was held at Haggs Castle Golf Club tonight  --  the 4th November 2015.
Captain Gillian McGinlay welcomed Honorary President Jennifer Mack and all the committee and members to the AGM.  -Secretary Jean Irvine read out 60 apologies

The minutes of the meeting held on November, 2014, had already been distributed and also on the website were taken as read. There were no matters arising.

The following reports were read out  -

TREASURERS REPORT BY - TRACY MASTERTON- FULL REPORT WILL BE IN THE MINUTES

You should all have in front you a copy of our accounts for the year ended 30 September 2015.

The accounts show a loss for the year. Those of you who were here last year may remember Gillian reading my report and highlighting the fact that without any significant fundraising in 2015 we would make a loss.

There are however two important things to draw your attention to:

- Our overall loss would have been significantly higher had the team qualified for the county finals. The cost of going to the county finals is around £2,500 although we do receive a grant from the SLGA of £1,500 towards these costs.
- We also had a fairly high level of resignations this year so as a result our subscription income has gone down.  Had we not had those resignations we would have shown a slight profit for the year.

The majority of our costs are fairly fixed and there are not really any other significant areas to comment on. Going forward we will continue to review our cost base and try to make as many savings as we can.

We currently are still in a healthy position however going forward we do need to increase our income – either through new members or significant fundraising. As it stands just now our annual costs are more than our annual income and whilst this has not had a significant impact on us this year it is not a position that is sustainable going forward.

SECRETARY'S REPORT AGM 2015 BY  JEAN IRVINE
Another successful year with most competitions being played in reasonable weather.
Not having an April medal proved a good decision and the new formats of a Stableford (although poorly attended) and a Tri-am I think were popular changes.
We have a good selection of courses for next year and I hope we can encourage members to support as well as is possible. My worry is that if we don't get good attendances, we will lose the support of the county clubs who very generously give us courtesy year after year so please try and encourage your fellow members to attend.
You will see that there will be evening ballots at the Spring meeting, June and July medals, a maximum of three times at 5.30 so we hope working ladies will benefit from this.
I again enjoyed being part of the jamboree this year, again so close, these competitions have been one of the highlights of my time as secretary. Caddying is such good fun and keeps you very involved with the team.
This is my last report as secretary and therefore there are quite a number of people whom I wish to thank. Firstly I would like to record my thanks to Haggs Castle Golf club and all their staff, Alan Williams who was General Manager for most of my time as secretary and to Tracy and all the staff in the clubhouse, they made my job so easy regardless of what we were organising, many thanks. To Jean Smith our Membership Secretary, Freda Tuck our results secretary, Past Captain Trish Brown, Past Captain Maureen Woodhead, Morag Turner who was secretary before me and of course Carol Fell who does such a power of work for everyone in the County. To everyone who has been on the committee during my five years also many thanks. That only leaves Gillian McGinlay, we have had a great two years and during my trials and tribulations this year, I only had to text or phone and she would be there to help.
Thank you so much. I wish my successor good luck, I assure you the first year is the worst!! Lastly, best wishes to Gillian Kyle , I know she will be an outstanding Captain.

JUNIOR CONVENOR REPORT - BY AUDREY MACKENZIE

The juniors started the year with three winter coaching sessions – two at the Glasgow Indoor Golf Centre with Karyn Burns and one at Mearns Castle Golf Academy with Mark Loftus.
The sessions helped the girls prepare for the forthcoming season and they approached March looking forward to the upcoming team matches.
Coming into this winter the girls are meeting up at various courses to play together. The first of these sessions took place at Ranfurly Castle with 14 girls taking part. The next session is scheduled to take place on 22nd November.

The RLCGA Junior Kennedy Salver Team with Captain Gillian McGinlay, Vice Captain Gillian Kyle and Junior Secretary Audrey MacKenzie
As Renfrewshire were hosting the Kennedy Salver at Elderslie GC we took the opportunity to play at Elderslie as often as possible. Our first match was against the Elderslie Junior Team and the girls got off to a great start winning 4-0. We then played a match against the Renfrewshire Ladies team - again at Elderslie. Unfortunately due to other golf commitments and holidays the Ladies struggled to field a full team. However the girls enjoyed the experience and won 4-1.

The bad weather in June meant a friendly match against Dunbartonshire and Argyll had to be postponed. It was played in October. D&A won but it was a great experience for the girls as 3 of the team were playing for the county for the first time.

The Kennedy Salver is the West of Scotland Inter county match. The girls were disappointed with their previous results and were determined to do better this year. In the end Lanarkshire were the overall winners but Renfrewshire came 2nd missing out by only 1 point. The day was a great success and the team of Heather Mushet, Anna MacKenzie, Niamh Kinney, Laura Craig, Charlotte McCluskey, Jan Adams and Ellie Wilkie did themselves proud.

21 girls took part in the Campbell Clock Stableford Competition at Whitecraigs Golf Club. The day was well attended with Gillian Henderson, Whitecraigs winning the Campbell Clock Trophy with 34 points. Kirsty MacDonald Whitecraigs won the 8 hole competition and Robyn Harrison MCGA won the 9 hole competition.
Jennifer, Gillian and Anna
12 girls entered the Junior Scratch County Championship. At the end of September the final took place at Cochrane Castle. The finalists were Jennifer Rankine, Haggs Castle and Anna MacKenzie, East Renfrewshire. Both girls played well with Jennifer winning 7/5.

There have been many individual achievements and I would like to mention a few: Starting with handicap cuts – Emily Crusher, Eastwood, started the season at 29 and ended the season at 20, Romy Erskine, Kilmacolm, started the season at 29 and finished the season at 21 and Alison Macnab, Kilmacolm, reduced her handicap from 21 to 18.

The West Girls teams often included girls from Renfrewshire with Niamh Kinney, Erskine, Heather Mushet, Elderslie, Anna MacKenzie, East Renfrewshire and Jennifer Rankine, Haggs Castle all being selected to play at various times. Heather and Jennifer played in the qualifying round of the Ladies Championship and both girls qualified for the match play stages, with Jennifer reaching the semi-finals. Heather reached the final of the Ladies championship at Elderslie losing on the 1st extra hole. Anna MacKenzie, East Renfrewshire has been selected for the Scottish Golf Academy which is the national development programme. Playing in many events over the summer Anna’s handicap has come down from 18 to 10.
Jennifer Rankine has had a tremendous year enjoying a great deal of success. Jennifer was selected to play for the Ladies County in the Inter County match at Loudon Gowf Club. She qualified for the match play stages of the Scottish Amateur Championship and she represented Scotland in Switzerland at the European Young Masters. Jennifer won the Ladies Club Championship at Haggs Castle and she won the Junior County championship for the 2nd consecutive year. There is no doubt she has had a great year. Well done Jennifer.

I think overall a very impressive year for the juniors and I would like to finish by thanking everyone who has helped me this year. Janette McCartney for a thorough handover. Carol Fell for updating the web site. Gillian McGinlay and Gillian Kyle for all their help and support throughout the year. Thanks also to all the ladies who have supported the juniors with a special mention to Jennifer Mack, Sandra Littlejohn, Kay Black and Freda Tuck.

And it is with great pleasure that the County award her honorary membership.

Gillian then presented Gillian Kyle with her Captains badge

GILLIAN KYLE  - THE NEW CAPTAIN

Ladies, I am honoured to be your new Renfrewshire Ladies County Captain. I shall endeavour to fulfil the role to the best of my ability and hope I shall have your support. Please do not hesitate to inform me of any ideas you may have to lead our County forward in this new era of unified golf. Gillian has dedicated the last 2 years of her life to the County. Despite her fulltime, crazy-shifted job, she’s rarely missed an event, even if on night duty and if she was at work, she was certainly thinking of us. She will be a hard act to follow but has reassured me that her phone will be in her pocket at all times.

Gillian, I’d now like to present you with your Past-Captain’s badge and a token of the TEAM’S appreciation for all your hard work over the last 2 years.

It gives me very great pleasure to introduce my Vice Captain to you. She is a tremendous supporter of the County despite starting her golf career in Dumbartonshire! She plays in most of our competitions, often finishing high up on the leader board, showing that the competitive spirit from her international hockey days has not left her. She has been a regular, super keen caddy at the jamborees-although has been known to swear at her player in frustration! She is a member of 2 golf clubs at the moment and Captain for the 2nd time at Gleddoch. As a retired teacher, I’m sure she will be very organised and will keep me in order.

Ladies, I am very lucky and absolutely delighted that JUNE LOCKART has agreed to be my Vice Captain.
Thanks you so much June for taking on this role. Please come up and collect your badge and take a seat at the top table.

Moving on to the other office bearers-

Wendy Cameron continues as our Honorary Life President. Thank you Wendy.

Jennifer Mack starts her 2nd year as President. In line with the other counties, we have changed the term of office of this position to 3 years rather than 5. Thank you for all your support at last season’s events Jennifer.

I shall remain the Child Protection Officer.
Jean Irvine and new Secretary Carol McNally

Jean Irvine has finally got the chance to step down as Secretary. What a great amount of work plus extra tasks like caddying and ballot duties you have done over the past 5 years, Jean. It has been very much appreciated by us all. Please accept this small token of our thanks from Gillian.

I’d like to propose Carol McNally, from Williamwood, to take on the role of Secretary. I have known Carol for around 35 years through other sports and I know she will be an efficient secretary and enjoy being more involved in the County. Can I have a seconder please….. Jean has kindly agreed to keep an eye on Carol next season. Thanks again Jean.

Tracy Masterton will stay on as our very efficient Treasurer and Audrey Mackenzie as our very proactive Junior Convenor. Many thanks to both of them for their excellent work.

Jean Smith - Retiring Membership Secretary

At this time, Jean Smith is stepping down as Membership Secretary. She has been amazing at keeping our records up to date whilst battling ill health for so long. It’s super to see you here tonight Jean, and thank you so much for all your hard work behind the scenes in the dark winter months. I believe Gillian has a little gift for you.

In her role as Past Captain, Gillian has agreed to oversee the role of Membership Secretary for 2015/16. As you should have read by now, we are trying to make the process of paying the subscriptions a straightforward one by using more of the software we already have. We shall see how this year goes and assess the situation for 2016.

Coming off the Committee, but quickly back on as our new Results Secretary, is Sandra Littlejohn.  Thank you so much Sandra.

Freda is presented with flowers
Freda Tuck hopes to teach her all that she knows over the course of the season for that role. On that note, we’d like to thank Freda for all her input and hard work for the County over the past 8 years, both on committee then as our Results Secretary. Please accept this gift as a token of our appreciation.

As always, grateful thanks to Carol Fell - the Master of the website.

The rest of the committee is as follows-
Donna Jackson, Elaine Robb and Shirley Back are going on to their final year.
New on this year is Fiona Armour of Renfrew and Linda Ellery (East Renfrewshire)  I hope you will both really enjoy your time on the Committee.

Other matters-
June has brought along some of our clothes range tonight, including the new outerwear. It is not ideal for someone to have to bring everything along to each event so the plan is to display it at the County Championship, Foursomes and Greensomes and orders can be made via email at all other times. A particular garment can always be brought along if requested. I hope that suits everyone.

On to the fixtures for 2016.
If I could just highlight a few of the forthcoming events-
fundraising Beetle Drive will be held at Ralston GC on Sunday February 7th from 2pm. This raised a super amount for County funds last time so your attendance and/or a raffle donation would be very much appreciated. More information will be sent out soon but please put the date in your diaries TONIGHT!
The County Championship will be held at East Renfrewshire GC from 13th to 15th of April.
The West of Scotland Championship will be held at Bonnyton GC on Sunday 8th May.
The Intercounty Jamboree will be held at Douglas Park GC from 20th-22nd of June.
As you can see-we are offering 3 evening ballots in 2016 with 3 tee off times in each. These are primarily for those who are unable to play in morning ballots due to work commitments and I do hope they will be fully used. Many of the other competitions will be ‘fun’ competitions so hopefully there will be something for everyone. Looking at last year’s results, in the 6 competitions which counted for handicap, the CSS went UP every time and 3 of them were Reduction Only so please try and support next year’s competitions.

There being no further business, let’s move on to the Prizegiving. Jean will read out the prizewinners and Jennifer will present them.
Congratulations to everyone who has won a prize this evening and to those who have been successful at their clubs. There’s always next year! Talking of next year, the 2016 AGM will be on November the 2nd, here at Haggs Castle GC.

Donna Jackson then gave the vote of thanks which was followed by the prize giving
