MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT

MacMillan Cancer Support

Our Assistant Manager, Gregg Sommerville, and 3 of his friends are taking part in the MacMillan Longest Day of Golf on Sunday 19th June.

Allow us to explain exactly what is involved: Four valiant warriors, namely Gregg Sommerville, Chris Love, Alistair Brown and Jonny McLeish, are setting out to scale the peaks of Bonnyton Golf Club, Cathcart Castle Golf Club, Whitecraigs Golf Club and the mother of them all... Pollok Golf Club all in one day in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support.

We will be teeing off at around 4a.m on Sunday 19th June deep in the
moors of Eaglesham and hopefully finishing before darkness falls in the scenic suburb
of Pollokshaws.

And so… armed with several boxes of top flites we will head out on our
voyage of discovery. If we're not back by Thursday send a search party.

The event will be well documented and photos from the day will be added to the Playsport Golf website so you can see how they managed to get on!

So if you could please dig deep to sponsor the lads it would
be much appreciated, no donation is too large or too small, so whatever you can spare
would be much appreciated.

To sponsor the guys all you need to do is visit: http://www.justgiving.com/macmillanlongestgolfday2011
All proceeds go directly to MacMillan Cancer Support

Many thanks in advance and for any further details please contact Gregg Sommerville directly on gregg0001@googlemail.com and he will be more than happy to answer any questions
that you may have.

GALES BLOW AWAY THE ST RULE TROPHY IN ST ANDREWS

Southerly winds gusting up to 50mph on the Old Course, St Andrews made a little bit of golfing history in the prestigious St Rule Trophy women's international amateur tournament this weekend.
Only 11 players in the quality field of 59 were able to complete their second rounds before play was suspended at 11.45am as golf balls were not remaining stationary on some of the more exposed greens.
At that point the tournament was reduced from its traditional three rounds to two because there would not have been enough time to get the field round another circuit, bearing in mind the majority still had to finish their second rounds.
Eventually, just before 3pm with the gale showing no sign of decreasing, it was decided to abandon Sunday's play and declare the prizewinners on the basis of the first-round scores returned over the New Course on Saturday when it was also windy but not on the same scale as 24hr later.

SGU AREAS VOTE 10-6 AGAINST AMALGAMATION WITH SLGA

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
This evening (May 26) the Scottish Golf Union held a Special Meeting with the sole purpose of considering the amalgamation (with the SLGA) proposal. This proposal has been widely consulted upon with Areas, Counties and Clubs. The proposal was approved at the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association’s Special Meeting yesterday (May 25).
The Scottish Golf Union’s shareholders, comprising the sixteen Area Associations, voted 10 to 6 against the amalgamation proposal. This means the proposal in its current format has not received the required level of support by our shareholders and therefore amalgamation cannot proceed at this stage
The Scottish Golf Union Board is disappointed with the outcome of the Areas’ vote. The Board believes that the vote is contrary to the wishes of the majority of clubs they represent, which saw 263 affiliated clubs (89.2%) approve the amalgamation proposal from the 295 clubs (51%) that formally responded with their views.
The amalgamation proposal has also been strongly supported by the amateur game’s other key stakeholders, including the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association and its members (Clubs and Counties), major funders sportscotland and other commercial sponsors and partners.
The Scottish Golf Union’s commitment to supporting clubs, together with developing talent and growing the game, remains at the heart of our activities and we will continue to strengthen relationships with clubs to deliver against this strategy. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all clubs for their assistance and patience during this lengthy process.
The Scottish Golf Union Board believes that this result is a setback for the future development and governance of Scottish amateur golf. However, the Board takes heart from the fact that all 16 Areas have consistently reaffirmed their support for amalgamation and a commitment to finding a way to achieve amalgamation working with the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association.
The Board will continue to act in the best interests of Scottish golf and will meet on June 6 to consider how we can progress this important matter.

SLGA GIVE AMALGAMATION A BIG YES VOTE - OVER NOW TO SGU

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Scottish Ladies Golf Association members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposed amalgamation with the Scottish Golf Union at an extraordinary general meeting, held in the lecture theatre of the A K Bell Library, York Place in Perth today.
Now the pressure is on the Scottish Golf Union to get a "yes" vote at its deciding meeting tomorrow night.
If 12 of the 16 SGU areas vote in favour of the amalgamation, then it will go through automatically and Scottish Golf Limited – one governing body for Scottish male and female amateur golf - will become operational from October 1.
The day-to-day operations of the SGU and SLGA will continue independently until then while the new company is being set up with the selection of the Board for Scottish Golf Limited and the preparation of a final combined budget.
Sheila Hartley
Dr Sheila Hartley, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, the SLGA company secretary, said after the EGM in Perth:
“The proposal was carried by a significant majority, with 93.03% of votes cast being in favour of its adoption. The amateur game’s key stakeholders, in particular major funders sportscotland and other commercial sponsors and partners, have also strongly supported the proposal.
"The SGU’s Extraordinary Meeting is to be held tomorrow night, and the amalgamation will proceed if the Areas cast 12 of their 16 votes in favour.”

Shona Malcolm
Shona Malcolm, pictured left, the SLGA chairman, said at the conclusion of the meeting:
“The SLGA Board is delighted with the outcome of the members’ vote and would like to take the opportunity to thank all of those who participated during the lengthy and extensive consultation process. Throughout the process the SLGA members have demonstrated a commitment to the future development and governance of Scottish amateur golf, with no thought of self interest.
“The SLGA is committed to progressing the amalgamation to its conclusion, while protecting the democratic principles of the clubs, the main funders of Scottish amateur golf, being the voting members.”
The SLGA was formed in 1904 and has its headquarters in Perth. The SGU came into being in 1920 and its present HQ is at The Duke’s Course, St Andrews. The leases on both current properties have a few years to run, but that would give the new Board time to identify the most appropriate permanent location for the amalgamated body in due course.
Although the amalgamation process in the SLGA has gone through months of discussion quite smoothly, the same cannot be said of the SGU. The major sticking point is that the present men’s area committees will have no role to play in the new controlling body for Scottish amateur golf.

with Anne Laing and Isabel Crawford (?I think)
I went down to Machrihanish today with my sister-in-law, Norah Adams, a county member and Vice Captain at Kilmacolm. We left at 6am and got there at about 9.30am with a short stop for coffee and a roll and a change of driver.
We joined the match at the 6th hole in gale force winds and driving rain. I just thanked my lucky stars that I was not playing in those conditions! I am amazed how well both Louise and Eilidh played considering the weather. Wet hands, stinging rain on your face, soaking towels, umbrellas turning inside out....I think you get the picture!
The standard of their golf was fantastic and although Louise won by 5/4 the game was close up until the putting. Poor Eilidh had so many putts which nearly dropped and that would have made all the difference. I must say that Louise played so steadily and she richly deserved her win after reaching the final 3 years in a row.  We all congratulate her on a fine performance. I am quite certain that there will be more opportunities for Eilidh especially when you consider that this was her first experience of playing in the "Scottish"....WELL DONE to her !

I also want to congratulate Megan and Alyson on the great golf they played too...such a shame that the Renfrewshire girls were all in the same half of the draw.

Well done all of them and roll on next year at Tain!

Cheers Trish

COLIN FARQUHARSON REPORTS FROM MACHRIHANISH

Louise and Eilidh (Courtesy of Colin Farquharson) - Click to enlarge
It was third time lucky for Dunfermline schoolteacher Louise Kenney in the final of the 97th Scottish women’s amateur golf championship at Machrihanish links on the Kintyre peninsula today (Saturday).
Actually, luck did not come into it at all.
On a morning of foul weather wind and rain – the 28-year-old Pitreavie Golf Club member hit top form to beat 18-year-old Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) by 5 and 4 to win the championship

Louise was beaten my Eildih’s older sister Megan in the 2009 final at Southerness and by Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) in last year’s final at Craigielaw. On neither occasion did she do herself justice. But it was a different story at Machrihanish.

“I went into the final this year, feeling that my time had come. I was totally relaxed which was the big difference from the last two years,”said Kenney.

“I got off to a good start and in these horrendous conditions I felt I played really well. Eilidh’s only 18 – her time will come, no doubt about that.”

Eilidh tried to take a philosophical view – not easy when you’re a teenager and you’ve just lost the biggest match of your life.

“It was disappointing to lose in the final but I’ve had a great week,” said Eilidh who is bound for Stirling University in the autumn.

“It was a shame about the weather. Louise played very steadily in it.

Kenney coped better with the strong southerly wind and rain over the first nine holes and was three up after eight holes.

The experienced Fifer won the third and fifth with young Briggs bogeying both, the fifth with an uncharacteristic three putts.

Eilidh looked as if she was settling when she birdied the sixth to cut her deficit to one hole but Kenney countered with a brilliant eagle 3 downind at the long fifth.

That put Louise two up and she made that three holes of an advantage when Briggs bogeyed the eighth, The Kilmacolm player had bogeyed three of her last six holes in contrast to her semi-final victory in which she bogeyed only one hole of the 17 she played in beating her sister Megan.

Kenney slipped to her first bogey of the day to lose the ninth and she turned for home with a two-hole advantage, having gone out in an approximate one-under-par 36 – excellent scoring in the foul conditions.

Briggs covered the first nine in two-over 39, compared with four-under 33 in Friday’s semi-final.

Kenney re-established a three-hole lead when Briggs bogeyed the 10th and a par at the 11th was good enough for Louise to take a four-hole lead for the first time.

The weather had not relented and, into the wind, the 488yd 12th was halved in bogey 6s.

The 13th was a “brutal” hole into the wind and rain – and, not surprisingly it was halved in double bogey 6s.

Kenney clinched her second national title – she was also Scottish girls champion in 1999 - with a bogey 5 at the 14th.

FINAL (18 holes) - Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) beat Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) 5 and 4.

SCOTTISH WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP MACHRIHANISH FINAL -- EILIDH BRIGGS (Kilmacolm) v LOUISE KENNEY (Pitreavie)

Live Scoring from the Scottish Final at Machrihanish

The 18-hole final teed off in foul weather. A slate-coloured sky, rain blowing up on a freshening southerly wind of 15 to 20mph and the "white horses" charging in on the tide at Machrihanish Bay.

Louise Kenney out in approximate 36 (one under par); Eilidh Briggs in 39 (two over).

CAN YOU GET TO MACHRIHANISH TO SEE THE FINAL

Tomorrow morning's 18-hole final of the 97th Scottish women's amateur championship over the Machrihanish links will feature Louise Kenney, who is No 205 in this week's updated Women's World Amateur Rankings (WWAR) , and Renfrewshire's  Eilidh Briggs, who is 1045 in the WWAR.

Forget about these misleading statistics - this has all the makings of an outstanding final, well worth making the trek down the Kintyre peninsula
Set off early though - the final tees off at 9am and Machrihanish is a long drive from anywhere!

Unfortunately your Webmaster will not be at Machrihanish  to see and photograph the event.

EILIDH WINS EPIC MATCH AGAINST MEGAN TO REACH THE SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Eilidh and Megan at the 1st tee -- Courtesy of Claire Hargan - SLGA
What a fantastic semi final match Eilidh and Megan played this afternoon at Machrihanish in the semi - final of the 2011 Scottish Amateur Championship.
Megan birdied the first two holes, however that was only enough to take a one hole lead. Birdie's by younger sister Eilidh at the 4th and 6th holes quickly turned the match in her favour and a par at the 8th hole was enough to give Eilidh a two hole advantage. The next five holes were halved in pars before Megan squared the match with a birdie at the 400 yard par four 14th hole and par at the par three 15th. However, pars from Eilidh at 16 and 17 were enough to win both holes and win the match by 2 & 1.

Eilidh was approximately three under par in winning the match by 2 & 1. Many Congratulations Eilidh

So sad that that both Megan ( The 2009 Scotish Champion) and Eilidh were in the same half of the draw as this match was worthy of being the final

GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL

MEGAN, ALYSON AND EILIDH ALL QUALIFY FOR THE MATCHPLAY STAGES AT MACHRIHANISH

A gale force southwest wind, laced with rain blown in off the Atlantic Ocean, today restored the Machrihanish links’ reputation as a fiercesome test of golf – but the cream still rose to the top in the second qualifying round of the 97th Scottish women’s amateur golf championship at the remote Kintyre venue.
Renfrewshire's Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm), the overnight leader with a 71, was blown away to an 82 in which she bogeyed seven of the last eight holes into the wind, including the last five on the trot.
However Megan who won the championship in 2009 at Southerness, is still the No 4 seed on 153.
Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) had a terrific round today to climb up into 5th qualifying place with halves of 33 out and 45 back underlined the contrasting conditions for the two loops.
Eildh Briggs (Kilmacolm) fought her way round in 84 in the wild conditions to also qualify for the matchplay stages tomorrow.--- Top 32 qualify
Further down the field both Carol Whyte (Windyhill) and Lorraine Morrow (Erskine) have qualified for the Clark Rosebowl -( the next 16)

MEGAN LEADS THE FIELD AFTER ROUND 1 AT MACHRIHANISH

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
When your little sister starts to win golf titles that you previous held and brings her handicap down lower than yours, then it’s time to regain the family bragging rights!
Kilmacolm’s Megan Briggs did not say so in as many words but sibling pressure can be a tremendous motivator The 21-year-old law student at Strathclyde University left her clubs to do the talking at Machrihanish today.

At the end of the first of two stroke-play rounds to produce 32 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the 97th Scottish women’s amateur championship, it was Megan, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, the title-winner at Southerness two years ago, who was heading the field of 87 players with a round of one-under-par 71.
Although the Kintyre links had no defence on a calm day, Megan’s was the only sub-par round but it has to be said there seemed to be far more players breaking 80 than when the championship was last played here in 1990 and 2000 and the legendary “local girl” and six times champion Belle Robertson described the course as “a monster.”
Even the great links courses need bad weather to bear their teeth.
“This is only my second stroke-play round of the year. The first one was in the Renfrewshire county championship (won by younger sister Eilidh),” said Megan.
“I’ve been so busy with my fourth year studies and exams I’ve just not had the time to play golf or practise. So here I am, not really thinking too much about winning the title again but I hole a few putts it’s a sub-par 71.
“Yes, sister Eilidh’s been playing well. She won the County title and the West of Scotland Championship and her handicap’s down to +1.”
Megan admitted that it was a perfect day to be playing Machrihanish with its defences down but straight hitting was still called for.
She holed putts of 10ft and two of 25ft for birdies at the second, third and 10th and her outward alf of two-under-par 35 included a penalty drop out of a plugged lie in the rough at the seventh.
Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) was the next best Renfrewshire Player with a 76 (one over the CSS) followed by Megan's  sister Eilidh who had a 77

SLGA / SGU AMALGAMATION UPDATE

Dear Member,
I received last month the final proposals for the impending vote on the Amalgamation of the Scottish Ladies Golf Association with the Scottish Golf Union. This weekend I have received a voting form which I shall use on May 25th at a special EGM in Perth when all the Captains from the SLGA Counties, the Lady Captains of SLGA affiliated Clubs and the representatives from the SGU Areas will gather to cast their vote.

I have to vote on your behalf and it is my intention to vote FOR the proposal

All the information regarding this important decision can be found on the SLGA website:- www.slga.co.uk and I suggest that you read about it if you are interested. You will find this at the top of the page under:- Amalgamation Update. Where the links to the following statement can be found -------
The Amalgamation Working Group has reviewed the feedback from this consultation and finalised the amalgamation proposal as a consequence. The final proposal, memorandum & articles and regulations have now been sent to clubs, counties and areas. The appendices referred to in the proposal are available here.
You will remember that we were asked to find out from our membership how they would feel about merging the Ladies’ Counties and the Mens’ Areas if and when the amalgamation took place and the huge majority of RLCGA members were not in favour of this. I want to allay any fears which you may have had about joining forces with the Mens’ Areas. Some of the smaller Counties may well do this in time but we at Renfrewshire Ladies County Golf have no intention of so doing anytime in the near future.

Please feel free to get in touch with me by email at cmbardlui@aol.com or by phone on 01505 873462.

I hope that you have all been enjoying the recent lovely weather and have been reducing your handicaps!
I look forward to seeing you at the Spring Meeting this coming Thursday and at future fixtures throughout the season.

Happy golfing and regards from Trish Brown (Captain)

Kilmacolm's Eilidh Briggs the 2011 Renfrewshire County Champion won the West of Scotland Championship at Lanark with four shots to spare over 36 holes.
Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) matched Eilidh's opening round of 73 but could not live with her rival's pace on the second circut.
In the morning round Eilidh had birdies at the fourth, 11th, 13th, 15th and 17th with a bogey at the second and a double bogey at the eighth.
Alyson had an eagle 3 at the 14th and birdies at the second, fourth and ninth. She bogeyed the third ,the 7th and 17th.
In the afternoon round Eilidh added a 74 for 147 with Alyson returning a 78 for second place on 151.
Eilidh had second-round birdies at the first, second, 10th, 11th and 14th. She dropped shots at third, eighth and 12th. With so much in hand, she could afford the luxury of a double bogey at the 18th, knowing that its only consequence was a reduction in her winning margin.
Ayrshire's Mhairi McKay (West Kilbride) , with a net aggregate of 143 (72-71) won the handicap prize off seven of a handicap.
Lanarkshire trio of Lesley Lloyd, Susan Wood and May Hughes won the Senior Team event with the Ayrshire team of Mhairi Mckay, Connie Jaffrey and Emma Hale winning the Junior prize (best Net)
The Senior team representing RLCGA was: Carol Whyte, Donna Jackson and Liz Stewart.
The Junior team representing RLCGA was: Alyson McKechin, Eilidh Briggs and Linsey Stevenson.
