RENFREWSHIRE WEBSITE HAS MOVED

You are currently on the old blog website -- Click on picture to return or view the main site

The RLCGA Website was first launched in 2003 -- exactly 15 years ago this month. It has kept members up to date with news and photographs over the years.

However, with people now using mobile phones, iPads and tablets to view the internet it was decided to move with the times and try and make the site more mobile friendly.

The website address is still www.rlcga.co.uk . -- This page you are on at the moment is known as the RLCGA BLOG and it will not go away as there is much history and past news that we do not want to loose.

Renfrewshire Girls play D&A Girls at Caldwell Golf Club

Despite depleted numbers due to exam pressures, the girls had a very enjoyable afternoon together at Caldwell GC. The sun shone for most of the afternoon which was a pleasant change.

Match 1: Orla Rooney (Cowglen) and Jennifer Lynagh (Caldwell) played 9 holes each against Sophie Murphy (Clydebank).

Match 2: Lauren Agnew (Eastwood) and Zara Thomson (Williamwood) played 9 holes each against Eilidh (Clydebank).

It was pleasing to see that the winter coaching had been worthwhile with some lovely golf being played.

Liz Hale from Caldwell kindly organised a Greensomes over 9 holes for the younger girls who have yet to gain a handicap. Lucie Barclay (Kilmacolm) and Ella McGrath (Caldwell) played against Mia Thyne (Caldwell), and Lily (Clydebank). The girls played very well and enjoyed the different format.

All the girls enjoyed drinks and a snack after their game and we thank Liz very much indeed for arranging courtesy of Caldwell for them. We look forward to a return match with D&A in the autumn.

EILIDH WINS THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP  FOR THE SIXTH TIME

Eilidh Briggs 2018 RLCGA Champion
Finals day at the 2018 County Championship proved very  challenging  to all competitors for the Championship Semi-Finals and the Irvine Trophy (Handicap) Final in the morning with heavy rain and extremely wet/tough conditions underfoot.

Championship Semi-Finals

Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) played Liz Stewart (Greenburn). Eilidh played some phenominal golf considering the conditions and was 5 under over 10 holes making life extremely difficult for her opponent Liz.  -- Eilidh won 9 and 8.

Alyson McGinnigle (Cowglen) played Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) in the second semi-final. This was a closely contested match with both players demonstrating excellent golf under difficult conditions. Gillian eventually won the match on the 18th.

Irvine Trophy (Handicap) Final

This final saw Jan Macnab (Ranfurly Castle) play Morag Little (Whitecraigs). As the rain continued to fall, conditions became very tough for both players but their standard of golf remained very high.
It was a tightly contested match with Jan eventually winning on the 18th hole - congratulations Jan.

Championship Final

Although it was dry overhead for the afternoon thriller between Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) the conditions underfoot remained challenging.

The front 9 was closely contested with a number of birdies from both players.
Eilidh, however, triumphed over Gillian in the back 9 winning the match on the 15th hole.

Congratulations Eilidh on not only winning today's County Championship Final but also the Scratch and Net Qualifying Round on Wednesday - your golf over all 3 days was awesome and, hopefully, this is the start of a very successful season.

EILIDH WINS WHITTINGTON TROPHY BY 3 SHOTS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Renfrewshire County Champion  Eilidh Briggs followed up her ninth place finish in a big field at the Delamere Comboy Scratch Cup the previous weekend by winning the next big 36-hole open event on the English amateur women's golf calendar, the Whittington Trophy, at Whittington Heath Golf Club by three strokes this week.

Eilidh, who plays off +3 at Kilmacolm Golf Club, had rounds of 70 and 73 for a total of one-under-par 143. The course SSS is 73 for women and the CSS for this tournament was 75 for the first round and 74 for the second.

Eilidh is pictured with the trophy and Whittington Heath Golf Club's lady president Mrs Jean Hulme.
The Scot got one hand on the trophy with an excellent opening round of two-under-par 70 and five under the CSS. That gave Eilidh a two-stroke lead from Poppy Finlay who dropped out of the picture with a second-round 84 while Eilidh went on to return a 73 for a three-strong victory from Morgan Thomas (76-70) and Caitlin Evans-Brand (74-72.

4 WINTER FOURSOMES HEROINES !!

Only one pair could win, but all 4 finalists deserved medals for playing the Winter Foursomes Final in such Baltic conditions at Elderslie Golf Club.

The East Renfrewshire pair of Linda Ellery and Elizabeth Munro were receiving 11 shots from Cowglen’s Alyson McGinnigle and Williamwood’s Carol McNally, but they were going to need them all if Alyson’s tee shot at the 1st was anything to go by – it hit an out of bounds tree and bounced back onto the middle of the fairway !

Despite the cold, the wind and some sleet at times, all had some fine shots, with Alyson’s shot at the 4th getting her team pin high in 2.  However the East Renfrewshire pair were using their shots wisely and were only 1 down at the turn.  After halving holes 10 and 11, Alyson and Carol then surged ahead and the match finished on the 16thafter Carol’s Houdini-like approach shot. Although worthy winners by 3 & 2, Linda and Elizabeth should feel very pleased with their performance, especially in such testing conditions.

Many thanks go to Elderslie Golf Club for allowing us to use their course, and to Ian McCosh for braving the elements to support the girls.

DISAPPOINTMENT AT THE SCOTTISH AGM

Scottish Golf Chair Eleanor Cannon has today (Saturday 10 March) expressed her “deep disappointment” after the membership voted against a proposal to increase the annual affiliation fee paid by members for the first time in five years.

At the governing body’s Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh, members voted narrowly to reject the investment proposals, leaving Scottish Golf to reduce its spending accordingly.

Eleanor Cannon said: “We are deeply disappointed that we will be making more cuts at a time when we should be growing the game not just to make clubs more sustainable, but to hand the game over to our children and their children in a much better state than we found it after 10 to 15 years of decline.

PAST CAPTAIN GILLIAN RECEIVES AN HONORARY MEMBERSHIP FROM EAST RENFREWSHIRE GOLF CLUB

Gillian receives a momento from East Renfrewshire Lady Captain Celia Joyce

RLCGA Past Captain Gillian Kyle was delighted to receive Honorary Membership at the 95th AGM as East Renfrewshire GC has been a very big part of her life for around 40 years. The challenging course helped improve her golf over the years and she is very proud to represent the club in all the teams and competitions that she has played in at Club, County, National and at International level.

Her Dad (Jack Inglis) started her off in the game and still takes a great interest today. Her initial aim was to win the Club Championship once, but gradually started targeting the records of the ladies who had won it multiple times (Brenda Livingston, Jenny Addison and of course Ann Prentice to name but a few). Never did she really expect to achieve this as each final was a well contested match. She gained confidence from each win which helped when playing in other competitions.

Lowering her handicap (presently 2.2) enabled selection for the Renfrewshire County team which lead to a higher level of competition. Turning 50 opened even more doors and the International events have been another experience that she could only have dreamt of. It’s a short career though and as Gillian says "there is always a young 49 year old waiting in the wings to steal a place on the team".

Gillian thanked her family and all the East Renfrewshire members, especially the Ladies, for their continued support by taking such an interest in her golf at the recent AGM and looks forward to representing East Renfrewshire for a long time to come.

Gillian's Golfing CV

JUNIOR COACHING UPDATE

Due to other commitments like homework, athletics and the West Girls golf match at Balmore, there were only 4 girls at the winter coaching last Sunday.

Katie Darroch, Jennifer Lynagh, Orla Rooney and Aaliyah Sandhu had Karyn's undivided attention at the Glasgow Indoor Golf Centre. (The weather can't stop golf there!)

The girls warmed up on the range with Karyn giving them some tips then they split into 2 groups to use the simulator rooms. There was time for them all to hit 5 shots with each club to get an idea of their average and best distances. A very worthwhile exercise which is recommended for all golfers at this time of year.

They have 1 more session at the Indoor before going to Whitecraigs GC on March 18th to play the Par 3 course then Kilmacolm GC on March 25th for a game outdoors-weather permitting! ☃

GOLF’S NEW WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM DESIGNED TO WELCOME MORE GOLFERS

20 February 2018, St Andrews, Scotland and Liberty Corner, N.J., USA:

The way golfers around the world will calculate their handicaps is set to be transformed by a new system developed by The R&A and the USGA, with key features designed to provide all golfers with a consistent measure of playing ability.

The new World Handicap System, to be implemented in 2020, follows an extensive review of systems administered by six existing handicapping authorities: Golf Australia, the Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU) in Great Britain and Ireland, the European Golf Association (EGA), the South African Golf Association (SAGA), the Argentine Golf Association (AAG) and the USGA.

The new system will feature the following:

Flexibility in formats of play, allowing both competitive and recreational rounds to count for handicap purposes and ensuring that a golfer’s handicap is more reflective of potential ability

A minimal number of scores needed to obtain a new handicap; a recommendation that the number of scores needed to obtain a new handicap be 54 holes from any combination of 18-hole and 9-hole rounds, but with some discretion available for national or regional associations to set a different minimum within their own jurisdiction

A consistent handicap that is portable from course to course and country to country through worldwide use of the USGA Course and Slope Rating System, already successfully used in more than 80 countries

An average-based calculation of a handicap, taken from the best eight out of the last 20 scores and factoring in memory of demonstrated ability for better responsiveness and control

A calculation that considers the impact that abnormal course and weather conditions might have on a player’s performance each day

Daily handicap revisions, taking account of the course and weather conditions calculation

A limit of Net Double Bogey on the maximum hole score (for handicapping purposes only)

A maximum handicap limit of 54.0, regardless of gender, to encourage more golfers to measure and track their performance to increase their enjoyment of the game

WINTER FOURSOMES SEMI FINAL - GOES TO THE 18TH HOLE

Winter Foursomes Semi Final played at Cowglen

Home player Alyson McGinnigle with partner Carol McNally (Williamwood) had an extremely exciting semi final winter foursomes tie giving 7 shots to Gill Unick and Lorraine Morris also of Williamwood.

Alyson and Carol got off to a good start with some pars and a birdie resulting in being 4 up at turn.  Gill and Lorraine seriously rallied and played fabulous golf in the back 9.

With ground conditions being extremely wet, 6 holes were shortened and indeed, the par 3 12th was closed.  This resulted in the par 4 13th being converted to 2 x par 3s.

From the 10th hole Gill and Lorraine won the next 6 holes with a net score of 1 under par. Fantastic golf.  This resulted in the Williamwood pairing being 2 up with 3 to play.

Alyson and Carol won the par 3 16th with par bringing the game closer.  The long par 4 17th was the last stroking hole for Gill and Lorraine.  Alyson and Carol won this hole with bogey 5.  Game now square.  All to play for going up a shortened 18th.

Two good tee shots were followed by two good second shots.  Again a winter green with Gill and Lorraine posting bogey 5.

Alyson had a downhill putt for par and a win.  The ball went in!  Could not have been closer, all down to the last ball struck.

Thanks go to Carol McNally for the report

Alison and Carol now meet Linda Ellery and Elizabeth Munro (East Renfrewshire) in the final -- To be arranged

£1,503 RAISED AT WONDERFUL BEETLE DRIVE AT HAGGS CASTLE GOLF CLUB

RLCGA members as always proved to be most loyal and generous by attending our annual fund raising Beetle Drive at Haggs Castle Golf Club, which catered for us very well.

88 ladies participated in the fun competition but they also contributed in several ways to achieving an incredible £1,503 profit.

The amount was achieved by means of a raffle, a star draw for some 4-ball vouchers and free lessons, and some silent auction items mostly provided by members.

Generous donations were also given at the end of the afternoon, and many ladies also enjoyed some retail therapy through stalls set up by Carol McNally and Doreen Mains.

A huge thanks is due to our hard working committee in the lead up to the event and on the afternoon (particularly Gillian Kyle and Marilyn Muir), with finishing touches provided by our wonderful photographers Fiona Armour and Carol Fell.

Finally RLCGA should not only be proud of its team and its juniors, but also its members.

BEETLE DRIVE 2018

Captain June and your RLCGA Committee look forward to welcoming you to Haggs Castle Golf Club on Sunday for our fundraising event. The fun begins at 2pm. Even if you have not formally signed up, please come along as we will be able to organise more tables if required on the day-only £5 to enter.

Donations of bottles and plants for the raffle will be very much appreciated. The raffle, together with the Silent Auction and Star Prize draw, generates our biggest income on the day. There are great prizes that have kindly been donated in both the Auction and Star Prize Draw so hopefully everyone will go home with something!

PAST CAPTAIN GILLIAN HAS A GREAT START TO 2018

I have just been playing with Past RLCGA Captain Gillian Kyle in the February Medal at Troon.  She had a gross 72.
One under the winter SSS  of 73.

She had an Eagle 3 at the 2nd and out in par 37. Back in 35.
Birdies at 10,11 and 18. Great score on a beautiful day.

I opted not to play in medal but went out as marker. I'm needing the practise!  It was just lovely to watch.

With the start of the season coming soon it is great that with golfers like Gillian things are looking good for Renfrewshire!

Look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday at the Beetle Drive

SQUAD COACHING FUN AT THE INDOOR GOLF ACADEMY

9 girls and 7 seniors enjoyed squad coaching with Karyn Burns at the Indoor Golf Centre at Kinning Park on Sunday 28th January.

She split everyone into 3 teams with a mixture in each.

There was a chipping challenge, putting competition and 9 holes strokeplay at Kingsbarns! (On simulator!)

We had a speed putting challenge but that turned too competitive when someone (Liz!) introduced a quicker method which was perhaps not proper!

The results were very close after Karyn interpretated them all and the winning team was Liz Stewart , Carol Whyte , Jennifer Lynagh (Caldwell), Emily Crushed (Eastwood) and Aaliyah Sandhu (Haggs Castle)

Everyone enjoyed pizza and time to chat afterwards.  Our thanks go to Karyn for organising a great session.

PAST COUNTY STALWART MAY MUIR OF RALSTON GOLF CLUB HAS DIED

by Morag Key

I am sure many Members will remember the Mure sisters (May and Jessie) who were stalwarts of Ralston Golf Club, the County and the Vets.

Jessie died about 25 years ago just after her 80th birthday. May sadly passed away last week and would have been 104 this Saturday. What an innings! She had been in a Care Home in Paisley for quite a long number of years now.

Jessie and May were known the length and breadth of Scotland in golfing circles and sadly there won't be any of her contemporaries left.

However, there will be a few County and Vet members who will remember May.

Her funeral is on Thursday 1st February at 10am at Woodside Crematorium in Paisley.

When I took up golf in 1981, the Mures were very encouraging and once we started going to Open Days and golfing venues around Scotland and met other golfers, it was amazing how many asked if we knew the Mures when they heard we were from Ralston.  —
We had to be on our best behaviour !

SECOND QUARTER FINAL WINTER FOURSOMES TIE IS PLAYED

Cathy Morton and Lyn Black (Eastwood) played Alyson McGinnigle (Cowglen) and Carol McNally (Williamwood/Pollok) on a rather surprising dry and reasonably mild day for January.

Owing to ground conditions at Williamwood and Cowglen, the tie was played at Pollok as full course was open.

The "home" players got off to a good start. Cathy and Lyn pulled one back with par at 7th hole. Misfortune struck the Eastwood pairing at stroke index 1 allowing Alyson and Carol to stretch their lead.

Again the "visitors" pulled one back with par at 12th but par thereafter gave Alyson and Carol the victory.

Another super game of golf with great chat too.

SCOTTISH GOLF VOLUNTEER CHAPERONE ROLES

They are looking for individuals who are keen golfers, have a good understanding of Performance Sport and enjoy working with groups/teams.

Clare Queen has attached an advert for the role which details the responsibilities involved and would appreciate if you would circulate this among your members.

If anyone has any questions or would like more information on what the role entails they can contact her.

Although there is no deadline for anyone wishing to put their name forward we would like to hear from anyone interested by Monday 29th January.

BEETLE DRIVE SUNDAY 4TH FEBRUARY

Our annual fundraising Beetle Drive is only 4 WEEKS away on Sunday February 4th from 2pm at Haggs Castle Golf Club.

It is now time to let your Committee know if you are able to come along and support the event on February 4th at Haggs Castle Golf Club.
 Only £5 for a fun-filled afternoon.

We have received generous 4 ball donations from various clubs which will be up for silent auction on the day. These include Glasgow Gailes, Bonnyton, Pollok, East Renfrewshire, Old Ranfurly, Whitecraigs and Ralston and hopefully more nearer the time.

Why not get a group together and plan your bidding in advance?
The raffle will be one of the major income generators and your donations will be gratefully received on the day or hand into Haggs Castle prior to the event.

So please reply to Past Captain Gillian asap at gilliank17@sky.com if you haven't already done so. Looking forward to kicking off the 2018 season with you all.

Regards, Captain June and the RLCGA Committee.
