RLCGA “Growing Girls Golf” Initiative - From Janette McCartney Junior Secretary

RLCGA “Growing Girls Golf” Initiative
As I am sure many of you are aware girls are very much in the minority when it comes to golf and in Renfrewshire that is no exception.
The SLGA, the governing body of Ladies Golf in Scotland actively encourage clubs to allow girls to play in Ladies competitions and indeed there are penalties if your club does not allow girls to compete in SLGA competitions at your club.

Please refer to your copy of the SLGA handbook.

7.17.7.1 All female playing members, including juniors, with CONGU Competition Handicap are eligible to compete and win.
7.17.14.2 Juniors
Any club that does not allow a female junior member with a CONGU handicap to compete in and win SLGA Medal Competitions shall not be entitled to receive a Silver and Bronze Medal. In addition the club cannot be represented at the Medal Finals in the following year.

We would also hope that the few girls that play golf would be encouraged to play and win all Ladies competitions, stroke play, matchplay, team matches and open and invitation days at your club. Can I remind everyone that there is no duty of care when playing with a junior girl in a competition nor do you need to have disclosure, however we would encourage clubs to try to play a 3 ball when junior girls are also competing.

In Renfrewshire we have 27 clubs with just under 100 girls who have club membership. Compare this to the boys in the county who with slightly different boundaries and fewer clubs have well over 1000 boys. The Scotland wide Clubgolf initiative has helped by introducing more girls and boys to golf at school and golf clubs but there is still a long way to go.

At RLCGA we are doing our very best to encourage girls in the County to play Golf by arranging subsidised coaching and team matches. We also run The Campbell Clock each year at Whitecraigs for all levels of players and arrange a Girls Matchplay Championship.
Girls are invited to be members of RLCGA when their handicap reaches 24 which is exactly the same as Ladies who wish to join the county. Girls membership is free until they are 23 to encourage them to stay with golf whilst at University, college etc. This is in line with many clubs youth policy as many older teenagers are lost to golf in those years.

I am asking if the clubs could help more by allowing junior girls to play in all competitions as mentioned already and also to allow any Adults & Junior girls to introduce another junior girl from another club to play free of charge. This would allow girls and parents to make friends with girls at other clubs and encourage play between their clubs. I would ask if you could take this to your committees and make it known to your membership that you are in support of Girls Golf.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the clubs who have been outstanding at supporting junior girls by hosting medals and matchplay events over the years and also for encouraging junior girls without prejudice. Your continued support is greatly appreciated and anything further you can offer to help this “Growing Girls Golf” initiative would be welcomed. Lets do away with the outdated image that sadly lots of golf clubs have and move on with a forward thinking sport that embraces all.

I look forward to your comments and response.

ALYSON IS THE 2013 SCOTTISH CHAMPION

Alyson McKechin 2013 Scottish Champion -- Photo courtesy of Maureen Woodhead

FROM THE SLGA WEBSITE
REPORT BY ELSPETH BURNSIDE
Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) fulfilled a childhood dream when she defeated Clara Young (North Berwick) 3 and 2 to win the Scottish Ladies’ Amateur Championship at Longniddry.

“Winning the Scottish Championship is something I have thought about ever since I started playing golf,” said the 19-year-old, who had her Dad, Ian, as her caddie. “I am proud to be the first winner from Elderslie and hope it inspires other girls at the club.” With torrential rain making conditions far from easy,
Alyson birdied two of the first three holes and moved three up at the short sixth where Clara found trouble from the tee. Aiming to become the youngest ever winner, the 16 year-old East Lothian girl struggled to find the fairway in the atrocious conditions and was five down at the turn. But she then made a great, late comeback, winning three holes in a row from the 13th and was just two down with three to play.

However, Alyson held her nerve and a winning par three at the short 16th prompted the shake of hands.

“I started out very well but the mistakes started to creep in as the weather deteriorated,” said the new champion. “That let her in and she took her chance and it was beginning to become very close. “It’s great to win and it was good to have Dad on the bag. He kept me calm and made sure I didn’t get too far ahead of myself.
“I started playing golf when I was 12 and have come through all the Scottish squads from development upwards.
This just feels so special.” Clara admitted that Alyson had played the better golf. “She put me under a lot of pressure at the start,” she said. “But I can take a lot of positives from week. I would certainly have taken a place in the final at the start of the Championship.”

Catriona Matthew, who lives in North Berwick and is a Vice-President of the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association, was one of the brave spectators that watched all 16 holes.
“They are both great players and good to see two youngsters in the final,” said the three-time former champion and the only Scot to win a major title at the 2009 Ricoh Women’s British Open Champion.

Alyson , joint runner-up at the Helen Holm Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship last month, has now extended her lead on the SLGA’s Order of Merit.

“It certainly has been a great start to the season,” said the girl who works part-time at the Glasgow Indoor Golf Centre. “And I’ll be back to defend at Prestwick next year.”

Alyson joins the following Renfrewshire stars to make this achievement

Heather Anderson -- 1969 (West Kilbride)
Megan Briggs --- 2009 (Southerness)
Dorothea Hastings (nee Sommerville) - 1958 (Elie and Earlsferry)
Shirley Lawson -- 1988 (Southerness) and 1989 (Lossiemouth)
Aileen Wilson -- 1974 (Nairn)

Clara started with a double bogey 6 but covered the next 14 holes in three under par figures, finishing off the match in style with back-to-back birdies.

Alyson, leader of the SLGA Women's Order of Merit, is also through to the national final for the first time. She beat the 2009 champion, Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) by 2 and 1 in a semi-final distinguished by very good scoring. Alyson was four under par and had six birdies in all. Megan had an eagle 3 at the 15th and birdied the fourth. She was approximately two under par.

RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY TEAM IS ANNOUNCED

The team has been selected to represent Renfrewshire in the Inter County Matches at Bothwell Castle Golf Club Monday 17 – Wednesday 19 June 2013. Those chosen are (in alphabetical order);

Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm)
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm)
Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle)
Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire)
Gillian McGinlay (Cochrane Castle)
Alyson McKechin (Elderslie)
Iona Stephen (Ranfurly Castle)
Carol Whyte (Milngavie)
Reserve – Liz Stewart (Greenburn)

It was a real challenge to pick the team but I have no doubt the girls will do their best to retain the West Championship and go on to the Scottish Finals at Stirling.

Our Secretary Jean Irvine has volunteered to take over as Caddy Mistress so please contact her (email or telephone as per fixture card) to offer your caddying services. I know the playing team relies heavily on the ‘caddying’ team! I also know that we all have a ‘hoot’ on and around the course on these three days!

On Monday 17 June our tee times commence 9.00 am and 1.30pm and on Tuesday and Wednesday our tee times commence 9.30 am and 2.15pm.

I look forward, once again, to the support from the ladies of Renfrewshire County.

Captain Maureen.

CAN ALYSON OR EILIDH WIN THE 2013 SCOTTISH LADIES AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

From the SLGA Website
Alyson and Eilidh
Could it be a changing of the guard at this month's Scottish Ladies' Amateur Championship at Longniddry? The last three champions - Laura Murray, Louise Kenney and Kelsey MacDonald - are all missing from the line-up so there is the chance for a bunch of youngsters to make their mark at the East Lothian venue from May 14-18.

Teenager Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) showed the way with a terrific joint runner-up finish at the Helen Holm Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship at Troon.
"I've been working hard with my coach, Kevin Craggs, over the winter," said the tall 19-year-old. "I've also concentrated on getting fitter and stronger and I'm sure that it made a difference at Troon. "I have never played Longniddry but I intend to have a few practice rounds and I am really looking forward to the Championship. At the moment, I am working part-time at the Glasgow Indoor Golf Centre and I won't make any decision about turning professional until the end of next season."

Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) is another 19-year-old with eyes on the coveted title. She was runner-up to Kenney at Machrihanish two years ago and is now a regular in the Scottish team - her older sister Megan won the title at Southerness in 2009.
Eilidh has exams during the "Scottish" but the Physical Education student is determined not to be distracted. "Stirling University has been brilliant in arranging things," she said.

WEST OF SCOTLAND CHAMPIONSHIP -- MEGAN BRIGGS IS CHAMP AND RENFREWSHIRE WIN THE TEAM AWARD

Megan Briggs -- 2013 West of Scotland Champion (Photo courtesy of Lanarkshire's  Jean MacIntyre )
Congratulations to Renfrewshire - once again!  Yes, our team (just) won the Senior Team Trophy after a 3-way countback and it being decided in our favour on the last 3 holes.  Well done to Megan, Donna and Vice Captain Gillian.

Junior Winning Team -- Lanarkshire

1st Net Prize  -- Lauren D'Ambrosio

Very well done to Megan Briggs who won the individual Championship with a CSS matching 75 over a blustery West Kilbride.  It seems that joining the real world in full time gainful employment has not impacted too much on her fabulous golf.

Scores in the seventies were also recorded by Denise Cowan and Carol Whyte  - apologies if I have missed anyone else.  Modesty would normally prevent me from mentioning my own 80 (with an 8 at the par 5 third after venturing into the out of bounds with my second shot!!) but my golf has been so bad recently that I will rejoice in returning to something like what I should be scoring!!  Indulge me if you will!!

I apologise for, once again, forgetting my camera but Jean McIntyre from Lanarkshire (who won the Junior Team Trophy) agreed to bail me out and I thank her for all the photographs.

Mention, finally, should be made of our own Alexandra Qayum who was our sole Junior representative.  Well well done for flying our Junior Flag.  Hopefully our juniors will make the effort to play next year.
Captain Maureen
