West of Scotland Ladies' Close Championship - May, 2008

At a meeting of the West of Scotland Captains yesterday it was agreed that the The West of Scotland Ladies' Close Championship to be held on Sunday, 18th May, 2008, at Haggs Castle Golf Club be postponed due to the Womens' 10K Run taking place on that date. It is hoped to reschedule the event in October - details to follow soon.

Junior Coaching at Mearns Castle Golf Academy

22 girls took part in a fun seesion at the Academy on Sunday. The conditions were cold but dry and the group enjoyed a 1 hour session under the watchful eye of Karyn Burns coaching and myself helping out on the putting green. Ages ranged from 10-16 and the girls came from Ranfurly Castle, Bonnyton, Cathcart Castle, Old Ranfurly, Elderslie, Whitecraigs, East Renfrewshire, Cowglen, Eastwood and Williamwood.
The girls all seemed to enjoy the get together and Karyn was very impressed by some of the swings on display.
Hopefully the girls will be encouraged to keep playing and we will perhaps see many of them at the stableford competition in September.
Thanks to Christeen, Trish and Wendy for their support and also to Natasha Quayum who stayed after the Senior team coaching to help. Thanks Natasha!

Claire Queen joins our Yoga class!

Everyone was delighted (and honoured!) when Claire Queen, one of Scotland's finest lady golfers, turned up on Monday, 10th March, at Brookfield Village Hall to join our Training Squad Yoga Class.

Claire has already been at classes with Janice and has found yoga very beneficial to her fitness when travelling.

Yoga for Golf Coffee Morning

71 Renfrewshire County Ladies, along with some of our golfing friends, enjoyed the first fund raising event for our Centenary Year in 2009 at Whitecraigs Golf Club.
Those who attended left feeling that it was a most informative and entertaining morning as well as being beneficial to the start of the golfing season.
Janice Stewart of Par Yoga, who has been a practitioner of the art for the past 20 years (although she didn't look it!) and had qualified in the year 2000 with the Scottish Yoga Teachers Association, was our guest speaker. She enthralled everyone with her graceful movements and suppleness and was ably assisted by our President Wendy and Secretary Morag who had offered their services and bodies! They were really great sports and despite the odd grimace and yelp they ably demonstrated the various positions - some with greater ease than others! One thing is for sure, everyone now knows our President and Secretary! Well done girls!
Janice then gently guided the audience through a few paces in the limited space allowed. Legs were flying everywhere in the upstairs lounge amongst great hilarity! Janice was a star and many were discussing the possibility of arranging classes with her for next winter.
Hot off the press, appeared our fund raising cookery book and in a flash our intitial batch was sold out with many queuing in the hope of picking up a first edition!
Even the Captain was on hand to autograph copies!
In closing, Janice drew the winning ticket for a beautiful basket of goodies and this was won by Alison Houston of Paisley Golf Club.
The committee would like to thank all who came along and supported Renfrewshire. We are so pleased that you all enjoyed yourselves so much.

Bring a friend to the Coffee Morning at Whitecraigs

Hi everyone just to let you know your webmaster is going on holiday for a week to Portugal. However, I want to remind you all that on Thursday, 6th March,there is a coffee morning at Whitecraigs Golf Club to raise funds for the RLCGA Centenary Year.

Coffee and shortbread will be served at 10a.m. and this will be followed by a talk/demonstration at 11a.m. by Janice Stewart. Come along with a friend or a car load (not necesssarily from the County) and just let Morag Turner know before Wednesday afternoon so that we can have an idea of numbers.

Death of Aberdeenshire's Toni Moffat

Sad news to report today with regard to Mrs J L (Tony) Moffat of Aberdeen Ladies. It is understood she was found dead at her home in Aberdeen on Thursday.
A vice-president of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association, Tony was Aberdeenshire Ladies County Golf Association president from 1992-1993 and was one of the leading figures on the club and county golf scene for several decades.
She won the Aberdeenshire title in 1955 at Murcar and again in 1958 at Balgownie. She was beaten finalist five times - 1971 by Mrs Audrey Henderson at Hazlehead, 1974 by Mrs D Robertson at Cruden Bay, 1978 by Annette Laing at Peterhead, 1982 by Pamela Wright at Hazlehead and in 1983 by Elaine Farquharson at Aboyne. She was also a semi-finalist in 1973 and 1976.
Mrs Moffat was an Aberdeenshire county team player for many years. She was a member of the very strong Shire team that won the Scottish county championship for the first time at Elie in 1971 and also the following year when they made a successful defence of the title in the finals at Cruden Bay.
She was still holding down a place in the county line-up in the 1980s.
Tony was also a prominent figure in seniors and veterans' golf. Her name will be perpetuated in several championship trophies she presented. She was a past president of the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association and the current president of the Northern Division of the SVLGA.

A Message from your Captain

On Sunday, 17th February, twelve members of the Renfrewshire Squad attended the first training session of the year at Mearns Castle Golf Academy and were blessed with glorious weather - for February! The training was opened with a stroke play competition, suitably called "the first waltz", over nine holes. This was played in 3's with one best net score counting at the first hole; 2 counting at the second hole; and, 3 counting at the third hole. This was repeated for the next six holes. The winning team was Gillian Kyle, Beth Paterson and Alyson McKechin who took great delight in tucking into their winning buns! A social chit chat concluded an enjoyable day.

Two short game sessions with Karyn Burns will be held in March with further coaching in April.

Recently the squad took part in a Par Yoga evening conducted by Janice Stewart. Everyone found this to be beneficial and enjoyable and have signed up for another night in March.

Remember we are holding our Coffee Morning on Thursday, 6th March, and Janice is coming along to give us a talk and demonstration on yoga for golf. It's a great way to start off the season and there is no doubt about it you will feel much more supple after doing her exercises! Don't miss this chance to boost our Centenary Funds. Why not come along and bring a friend or even a car load? Just let Secretary Morag know so that we can make arrangements for seating and coffee. Winter Foursomes Finalists

The holders Roisin Black and June Lockhart (Gleddoch)have reached the final of the Winter Foursomes again and now meet the Ranfurly Castle partnership of Mary Hardie and Sheila Gray. The date and venue have still to be decided.

Spanish Seniors "Doubles" --- Barbara and Maureen are in top 20

In a field of 43 pairs Barbara Biggart (Kilmacolm) and Honorary RLCGA member Maureen Richmond (Liverpool) were unable to repeat their brilliant performance of last year at Bonalba Golf & Spa (Alicante) in the Spanish Seniors where they were 3rd. However they still managed to get into the top 20 this year at Golf Park Mallorca today after the fourball yesterday and the foursomes today.

Maureen Richmond and Barbara Biggart prepare for the Spanish Seniors

The Spanish Seniors at the Majorcan Golf Park Golf Club is the venue, from 12th to 15th February,
The competition begins with the -"Doubles" from the 12th and 13th February - where the Spaniards Marta Estany and Vicky Pertierra will defend their title.
Both were pushed last year at Bonalba Golf & Spa (Alicante) in tight battle with the Madrid Cristina Marsans and Beatriz Ramirez de Haro and the Scottish and RLCGA partnership of Barbara Biggart (Kilmacolm) and Honorary Member Maureen Richmond (Liverpool)
These three partnerships are the favourites for this years event
The last two days of play -14th and 15th February - will be the singles event.

The 2008 Spanish Seniors

RLCGA's Honorary member Maureen Richmond (Royal Liverpool), who was runner up in the 2007 Spanish Seniors and with partner Barbara Biggart (Kilmacolm) was 3rd in the "doubles", fly out to Majorca this Sunday to play in the 2008 event.
This years event will be held at Golf Park de Mallorca Golf Course from February 12th - 15th.
They are joined this year by Renfrewshire's Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) and Janette McCartney (Erskine).
We wish them every success in the event.

Megan Briggs receives Foundation Bursary Funding

Congratulations go to our County Champion Megan Briggs(Kilmacolm) who is one of the 91 students who will, this year, receive Foundation Bursary funding from the R&A. Individual bursaries range in size from £500 to £3,000.
